  • This video shows the processes involved in making Mark 1 of a driving glove design. These are imperfect versions with some details that will be changed or improved. They were made for a specific customer's hand size.
    Driving gloves are usually unlined, light gloves with perforations on the top panel for air circulation. Good grip on the palm side is important. Generally driving gloves have a top vent - an opening at the top side of the glove held closed with a buttoned strap. It's normal to find larger holes located at the knuckles - as driving gloves are used predominantly with the hand made into a fist while at the wheel, these holes are meant to reduce strain.
    Later on this year, we are hoping to release a range of glove making kits, including a kit for driving gloves. Please feel free to subscribe so that you can hear about it before everyone else.

    Great video! Just had a question about the stitching. It seems to me like you stitch with 1 thread and needle and not the saddle stitch / 2 needles way. What's the reason for that? I've seen it in other gloves too.

      You do not stitch gloves with a saddle stitch. You saddle stitch stiff vegetable tanned leather - you pre-punch the holes, use a blunt needle and hold it in a stitching clamp. You wouldn't do that with gloves - for one thing, you are using a sharp needle and could not saddle stitch as you would end up cutting the thread with the blade of the needle. What you saw was probably a lock stitch done by a sewing machine. Saddle stitching gloves would be unnecessarily time consuming.

    Hello, please tell me what is the name of the machine on which you sew
    And where can I buy it?

    Hello I am trying to repair my deerskin dress gloves. May I ask what size glover needle and thread that you used? I am hoping to fix up some parts on my own but my tools are always off.

      John James Glover's Needles, I use size 005. Most sewing machine threads work, as do the thicker Gutterman's. I use synthetic thread, personally, but purists would argue linen thread is better. In my experience, older gloves I have seen sewn with linen thread have aged to the point where the linen thread breaks apart easily. Synthetic thread doesn't age as quickly.

    What was that gel you were rubbing on them? Will my gloves be okay if I just use scrap leather "untreated" and with just thread and needle?

    • @skinnerdesignsca
      @skinnerdesignsca  Год назад

      The gel was just watered down glue. It's PVA mixed with water - until it's barely tacky. You want to attach the pieces with a very light bond, otherwise you stretch the leather when you separate the piece. Yes, untreated leather is fine. What's more important is thickness, and stretchiness

    such satisfying and calming videos you have, congrats! i am finishing my masters in fashion design and i am trying and testing to make a pair of leather gloves, and i am having quite a hard time hand sewing the tip/top of the fourchettes to the tip of the fingers... do you have any tips on this, or perhaps a video? thank you so much!!!

    • @skinnerdesignsca
      @skinnerdesignsca  3 года назад +4

      Stitch the fourchettes on the palm side first, lay them so that the fourchette's edge lines up with the middle of the tip of each finger. stitch the entire palm side in one go, then trim the fourchettes to the profile of each finger. then close the glove. you can see a brief snippet of me doing this in my overview video.

      @@bananaeater4332 You don't pre punch holes when glove stitching. You use a sharp needle instead, and eyeball the stitch length. You make hand stitched gloves using a running stitch. I generally aim for about 3mm between stitches

      @@skinnerdesignsca oh had no idea about that! Thank god i experimented with fabric first because I was about to punch the holes first on the leather now 😖 and what's the thickness of the thread? I have with me 0.5mm 0.8 and 1 but don't know which one to use
