Tranq Tourism - Kensington, Philadelphia's Exploitation Epidemic

  • A new drug called ‘tranq’, or xylazine, has been a big problem on Philadelphia’s streets for the last few years. But now, there seems to be a bigger problem.
    Content creators have been coming into places like Kensington, a suburb badly impacted by the epidemic, and filming substance users without their consent or for small sums of money. Sometimes, these people are barely conscious.
    We traveled to Kensington in North Philadelphia to find out what was happening, and to speak to people who run these channels.
    We also spent time with Sarah Laurel, founder of Savage Sisters, an organization working directly on the ground to stop this exploitation from happening. Sarah recently set up the Harm Ethical Reduction Committee and believes that for more resources to come into her city, these harmful videos must stop going out.
    Check out the Savage Sisters Recovery website: savagesisters.org/

    I'm from Philly. Was born in kensington, worked in kensington, and know all its history and reputation my whole life. What the RUclipsrs are pointing out is what the vast majority of people in Philly already know and believe. And the videos are the perfect cautionary tale that could prevent people from ending up like what they see on video. Feels about exploitation are irrelevant if it can prevent more people from ending up the same way.

      It's a noble effort to try to save people that have given it all up for the feeling of a drug. But it's just as productive, if not more, to try and save people from going down that road to begin with.

    Disagree with attitude towards street journalism. The general public should be shown just how our government does NOT care about it's citizens. Those images of Kensington are educating the public to the severity of this lapse in law, social support and morals. I thumbs up the street journalists. • @Cinnamon666Coca
      @Cinnamon666Coca 3 месяца назад

      It’s all about destigmatizing the disease that is addiction and using language that reflects an accurate, science-based understanding of SUD.
      Basically, what’s wrong with calling someone with substance abuse disorder an addict is because it’s STIGMATIZING. You are labeling a person by his or her behaviors.
      Using the term “person with substance abuse disorder” provides a more respectful and educative understanding/medical perspective.
      For example,
      “Stigma is a discrimination against an identifiable group of people, a place, or a nation. Stigma about people with SUD (substance abuse disorder) might include inaccurate or unfounded thoughts like they are dangerous, incapable of managing treatment, or at fault for their condition.”
      “For people with an SUD, stigma may stem from antiquated (old timey) and inaccurate beliefs that addiction is a moral failing, instead of what we know it to be-a chronic, treatable disease from which patients can recover and continue to lead healthy lives.”
      How does stigma affect people with SUD?
      “Feeling stigmatized can reduce the willingness of individuals with SUD to seek treatment.1,2
      Stigmatizing views of people with SUD are common; this stereotyping can lead others to feel pity, fear, anger, and a desire for social distance from people with an SUD.2
      Stigmatizing language can negatively influence health care provider perceptions of people with SUD, which can impact the care they provide.”

      here's the thing. they do provide resources to addicts looking to get clean, and rides to take them to rehab. and they would love it every addict was ready for that, but some refuse or are not mentally ready to decide to get clean. That being said, without access to clean "materials" (needles, etc) the rate of disease and infection skyrockets, as they just reuse what they have. infections from shared needles are rapidly spread. that is what this organization is fighting to prevent. no, the process isn't perfect. but unfortunately addiction is so rampant, and there's just not enough people to help, or a way to solve the issue once and for all

    • @sad2540
      @sad2540 4 месяца назад +5

      Normally I would disagree but with the flesh eating limb amputating effects of xylazine I'm inclined to think they qualify for being placed in a psych ward. When your limbs are rotting off of your body and you're still shooting that stuff up you NEED help and you NEED removed from this environment to survive. The costs of free emergency medical care for amputees, people having sepsis, etc probably cost far more than placing them in an institution & getting their mental health under control.
      I feel like other countries, such as the UK, that is how they would handle this epidemic. In the UK they do this to morbidly obese people too. One person with an addiction can rack up millions upon millions of dollars in medical bills & it's a part of why Healthcare is so expensive here. We just let people destroy themselves.

    • @Rachel-uu4ku
      @Rachel-uu4ku 4 месяца назад

      @@sad2540 that all SOUNDS great. it really does. BUT the affects of tranq and zylazine are MUCH stronger than just pure heroin. so rehab, detox, any of those options - if the addict is not voluntarily WILLING and EAGER to get help, they will end up right back on the street and out of rehab within a few weeks. aside from that, lets FIX the rehab industry first - it is a mill - all THEY care about is making money, they WANT the repeat addicts. Rehabs barely ever try to address the root cause of addictions, which is usually trauma. all they do is give the patients Suboxone or methadone, keep them in a bed for a few days or a few weeks, and toss them right back out on the street. furthermore, rehabs won't take addicts with open wounds - they have to go to the hospitals first for wound treatment, and many won't go to the hospital. its a vicious cycle.

The last thing I want to do is spend my time with a bunch of life's losers. I don't feel sorry for them. Most of them knew what they were getting into when they decided to try it, because everyone knows that dope is addictive. And everyone thinks they will just do a little bit once in a while and won't become an addict. Sure. That always works out, right? Oh yeah I should mention that I was an addict for fifteen years. I always wanted to get off of it and tried several times but could not do it. I know the hell of dopesickness very well. I finally went to a facility and voluntarily checked myself in. Over the next year I got off with the help of a doctor and Suboxone. I have been clean for five years now, with no cravings. Most of the addicts on the streets don't want to get clean. You can't help those people. I know. My brother died on the streets and I couldn't help him. Anyway I worked extremely hard to get clean. It was a year in hell. I never once caved in. I conquered it. I am not "in recovery" and I am no longer an addict. That bullshlt about always being an addict is just that - bullshlt. Why saddle people with that? It is hard enough to get off yet you are still an addict if you do get off? Fvck that. Finally these people who expect everything to be handed to them for free could at least clean the fvcking sidewalks. Instead of pipes and needles give them brooms and dustpans.

    I disagree with the opposition recording and viewing Kensington. I am a social worker and have worked as a case manager for the homeless in Philly. These images need to be seen. I respect the dignity of these individuals. No, they are not in their right minds but they are also living in front of private homes and businesses. Just like the addicts, I also respect the people who pay to live in the homes in Kensington, pay for the parks there, and street maintenance. The drug users take resources away from the residents. They trap the children inside their houses.
    It's a pathetic scene in Kensington that you will never be the same if you see it in person.

    I’m on the West Coast and needed someone to find an acquaintance who was in trouble FAST last year - her time was running out and I was honestly afraid she’d pass if someone didn’t find her. The cops don’t care and no one can keep a cell for long so I couldn’t call anyone near her. Welcome power of social media.
    I messaged Jeff of Jeff’s High On Life at midnight and he was out tracking her down within hours. Because of that, she got the immediate help she desperately, desperately needed. Jeff didn’t film it or talk about it online. He just did it. There was zero incentive for him to help her other than he genuinely cares a TON for his old neighbors. Please consider supporting his channel because the money his following generates means more people will receive more donated supplies.
    Channels that solely exist for personal profit are nauseating.

    the oligarchs that run the govt. want these people confined to a few streets in each city where they are contained and ignored. THIS NEEDS TO BE SEEN MORE NOT LESS. If a fellow american can make money and stay off the streets themselves as their own boss and not work for the man thats even better

    You’re right I’m never planning to be anywhere near Kensington, but handing out drug paraphernalia doesn’t seem helpful in curbing the use of substances! I don’t see a problem with the posting of these RUclips videos, it’s a public service announcement as far as I’m concerned.

    Sorry but I can’t stop watching. This is incredible and the visuals in the videos exploiting it are fascinating. Sadly there is no help for these people.
