I am an electrical engineer who dabbles in Mechanical engineering and aeronautical engineering and loves to analyze and improve complex production systems. I started to learn Polish 15 years ago during a one year work assignment in the small city of Piła just north of Poznan. I loved the culture and the people I worked with. I will learn Polish - I said to myself. After 15 years, a middle aged monolingual native English speaker, I can say that learning Polish has been the most difficult and humbling journey I have ever taken. As a complex systems analyst, I had to ask myself why? Your video is a big part of the answer. Lack of comprehension! Lack of comprehensible input. I had to passively listen to Polish news radio stations daily (streamed on the internet) for about 5 years before I could be able actually hear most of the spoken words in a sentence. Even today, I can only understand the basic subject of the broadcast but I cannot really understand the message. When I watch a Polish film or serial I understand only from what I see with movement, gestures and setting. I understand pretty much nothing from the dialogue even if I hear the words….. I hear the word but I don’t recognize it. I read Polish news articles about 3 times a week, without any attempts to translate, the result being very little progress. Why? The answer is the same for the radio broadcast and films. It isn’t comprehensible. So all you are left with is traditional language books and native Polish language teachers who overwhelm you with grammar and incomprehensible input. Your videos with subtitles are the first ones I have encountered in 15 years that make an attempt at being comprehensible. There is a lot to absorb for a native english speaker learning a Slavic language. 70 different conjugations for every single verb requires complex patterns of thinking to be moved to the subconscious. (I think English has 4 conjugations for each verb).
Agree with you. Had the same problems. I started reading childrens books which has helped me especially ones concerning music and football ( my 2 passions) . Great little town Piła. I live in Poznan.
Wow! Thank you so much for sharing your story in such details. I'm sure, many learners can relate to it. I aree that Polish is challenging for an English speaker, just like Chinese for a Polish speaker. However, if you're consistent in listening to a variety of comprehensible Polish, you will get to fluency. It's just a mater of time and dedication. Dear sir, I can assure you that learning English is just as difficult, but from a different point of view. It is absolutely mind-boggling to be faced with the complex structures of English tenses, aspects etc., not to mention the word order.
My native language is heavily agglutinative (i.e. there's a lot of conjugation) but we only use past, present and future tenses - 1 each. Now compare this with the labyrinth of English simple or continuous, perfect or imperfect etc. aspects or states - not mentioning the fact that you can also use passive voice in colloquial English (“passive voice can also be used in colloquial English”) without sounding ridiculously archaic or formal.
Every language is difficult for some reason. :)
@@magyarbondi I have personally witnessed native Slavic speakers move from A0 to B1 in less than 6 months in English, without leaving their native country. I personally witnessed my Polish coworker, who moved to Wisconsin on a work assignment visa with his family. I knew his 12 year old daughter when I worked in Poland. She couldn’t speak a coherent English sentence. Within 6 months of moving and attending school in Wisconsin she won her class book reading contest that consisted of of writing 2 page summaries of all the books she read, all in English. There is no way a 12 year old native english speaker moves to Warsaw and then in 6 months wins a book reading competition that requires a written summary in Polish. His 10 year old son after 6 months started forming his Polish sentences in English word order much to his horror. After two years his son had lost so much of his Polish language proficiency that when they returned to Warsaw, his son had to be held back in his school in Praga. His parents were really stressed. Word order is easy to learn as it was a substantial simplification of old english by getting rid of overly complex nouns and adjective inflections. English has no gender for nouns, verbs or adjectives. No verbal aspect (perfective/imperfective). Only 4 verb conjugations. Plural is simply adding an S to the noun. Making a noun out of a verb is as simple as putting an article in front of it and proper order in the sentence. In common use, the english tense system is a simplification of the grammar by avoiding endless verb conjugations and noun/adjective case inflections.
@@garyhull6689I loved Piła. Interesting fact about Piła: It only became a Polish city after WW2. The original border with Germany before the war was just east of the city and the stone markers for the old border are still there. Piła translates to the english word „saw”. The name of the city when it was Germany was Schneidemull or in english „sawmill”. The german verb „Schneiden” means to saw. If you meet a person named Schneider than they have a German name that means cutter in English. On the highway between Piła and Poznan where a bridge crosses the Gwda river stands the original „customs” house that was the border and where taxes had to be collected when crossing the border.

Zacząłem prawie od zera i dzięki Pani mogłem rozwinąć się w poziome językowym do zrozumienia kanału Roberta Makłowicza. Bardzo dziękuję za ten szczególnie interesujący i ważny film! Bazując na moim doświadczeniu, naprawdę mogę "podpisać się" pod wszystkim, co polecasz. Uczyłem się języków tradycyjnie (podręcznik, gramatyka, słownictwo...). I uczyłem się języków głównie poprzez słuchanie. Byłem zdumiony, jak szybko byłem w stanie rozumieć i mówić w tych językach tylko poprzez słuchanie. (Twoja metoda jest pod pewnymi względami podobna do metody "Assimil", ale wykracza poza nią.) - To bardzo dobrze, że zaprzeczasz uprzedzeniom, że polski jest jednym z najtrudniejszych języków. Jeśli cierpliwie zapoznasz się z językiem polskim poprzez słuchanie, możesz nauczyć się go na tyle dobrze, aby zacząć czytać polskie książki! - Dodałbym jeszcze jedną rzecz do Twoich rekomendacji: Mi osobiście bardzo pomaga, jeśli od czasu do czasu staram się powtarzać na głos zdania, których słucham. Dzięki temu szybko nawiązuję więź między rozumieniem ze słuchu a własnym mówieniem.- Serdecznie pozdrawiam!

Just one more comment: you are correct, comprehensible input is really the only way a native English speaker can learn Polish. The challenge is this: the more complex the grammar of the language the more challenging it will be to provide comprehensible content. Your content is the best attempt I have encountered so far but it is still very very difficult. But if it is targeted to other Slavic speakers or polyglots than it is probably perfect.

German native speaker here - I have been trying to improve my Polish on and off over a very (!) long time. And it has been a source of frustration - as I thought the same amount of time would have given me a much better command of a Latin based language. Let me tell you for a German native speaker - Polish is hard. However, I am not giving up - your approach makes a ton of sense. binge learning of grammar and word lists for sure will only frustrate people. If the clarity and speed of the way you speak in this video would be the normal speed of Polish in casual conversations among Poles, I would be in heaven - because I could understand most of what you talk about! Motivating! I will take another dive into Polish - I love Polish culture and my Polish wife :-) I should and want to be able to communicate with her in her language.
I have been studying Polish for 5 years doing apps, text books, and RUclips. I have attempted to quit several times and learn another language. I look at learning Polish like golfing. Golf is the hardest sport in the world. It’s frustrating that will make you want to quit until a nice shot happens and par the hole. I would like to play Oakmont or Augusta but those are above my skill. So for now, I consume content that is comprehensible like kids cartoons to learn but sometimes watch material that interests me even though above my level. Powodzenia.

Great video :-) I've been learning Polish for some time now (i have about 1,200hrs of listening) and I completely agree with you. I still have a long way to go, i started with traditional methods and then moved to only using CI and it really helped a lot. My goal is to someday be able to output well, I still cant do that, but I think I'll get there in time. It's crazy how I was not able to understand kids cartoons before and now I can listen and watch basically whatever I want, the only thing that still feels off limits to me in some way is literature.
Also, I would like to see some more advanced content. I watch your videos even though they are too easy for me, I just want to support the channel.
I really like your channel but there's no other channel like this for Polish that incorporates comprehensible input, as for the recommendation, I really enjoyed those games where you guess the film or guess what you are talking about so maybe do more of those

Hello, this is Vincenzo. I am a native English speaker. I can understand what you explained about the comprehensible input. It is very interesting. However, I have a problem and I am deaf. I was born deaf and grew up. I learned English at school. I love languages as a passion in my life. That is a problem what you recommend. I started to learn Polish grammar and words for one week. I found it is very difficult for me, and I nearly give it up. But finally, I watched your video and you have a great explanation about the comprehensible input. I realised. You explained that we should listen (that is my problem). I can not listen, then how can I get comprehensible input? Please explain to me about a deaf person who is able to understand Polish better. I like reading and writing. I barely speak it. When I talked to the people even in English, they did not understand me clearly. It is because of the deafness. I dont worry about being deaf, but I have a feeling of beautiful languages. I know some of European languages. They are not all 100 percent of my knowledge. You recommended that we should not read the subtitles but listen and watch any interesting films and so on in Polish. BUT for me, the subtitles are important I read. Myśle że masz razie, bo tylko pożniej używałem ten metody zacznałem rozumieć lepjej, Teraż mogłem nawet rozumieć prawie wszystko mówiłeś w ten film, ale to jest trudno rozumieć bez napisy.

Dzień dobry! Zacząłem uczyć się języka polskiego. W filmie Pani mówi, że kiedy zaczęła uczyć się języka hiszpańskiego nic nie rozumiała. Chciałbym zapytać, czy Pani słyszała słowa, ale nie znała ich tłumaczenia, czy też cała mowa w języku hiszpańskim była tylko zbiorem niespójnych dźwięków? Tylko strumień dźwięków? Mam problemy ze słuchem, więc rozumienie ze słuchu powoduje prydności. Słyszę dźwięki, ale nie mogę zrozumieć słów, wszystko brzmi jednakowo. Chciałbym się dowiedzieć, czy to jest tylko mój problem, ponieważ mam problemy ze słuchem, albo ludzie którzy mają normalny słuch też mają problemy z rozumieniem ze słuchu, szczególnie kiedy tekst jest nieznany I troche trudny. Dziękuję!

@@altairrus5120 I did passive listening on the internet to Polish news radio broadcasts. I still do it today. The speakers in these interview style broadcasts necessarily speak more clearly with good microphones so at least you have a chance to hear good clear spoken audio. Passively means I was doing my work with headphones making no attempt to hear anything. Believe it or not your brain will automatically recognize the sounds over time. In my case, one day I put the headphones on and started my work. A few minutes later I was startled because I could hear every word without understanding the meaning. It took about 5 years.
Dzień dobry. Proszę się tym nie przejmować, tylko regularnie słuchać materiałów na niższym poziomie. Najlepiej takim, gdzie większość słów rozumie Pan z kontekstu. Nasz mózg potrzebuje czasu, aby przestawić się na tryb nowego języka i nauczyć się słyszeć i odróżniać słowa. Wszyscy tak mamy 😉 Pozdrawiam serdecznie 🙂
Witam! Czy jest sens słuchania audiobooków po polsku (chodzi mi oczywiście o te książki, których treść już znam)? Czy może mi Pani doradzić, czego warto słuchać do poziomu A2?

Myślę, że warto, pod warunkiem że Cię nie nudzą i chętnie ich słuchasz. Słuchając po raz kolejny, słownictwo, wymowa, akcent, lepiej się utrwalą.

Ja robie napisy po polsku, a RUclips tłumaczy na inne języki. Nie byłabym w stanie przetłumaczyć wszystkiego 🥴
