You just have to be safe literally the exact same as going down a hill on a skateboard or bmx. It's not about the actual product itself it's about the way people use it

To operate an e-bike in Ontario, the e-bike must have:
    a maximum assisted speed of 32 km/h
a maximum weight of 120 kg (includes the weight of the bike and battery)
an electric motor not exceeding 500 watts
no modifications to the motor to allow it to exceed a power output greater than 500 watts and an assisted speed greater than 32 km/h
battery and electric motor securely fastened to the bicycle frame to prevent them from moving while the e-bike is operating
    all electrical terminals properly insulated
minimum wheel width of 35 mm and minimum diameter of 350 mm
two independent braking systems that applies force to each wheel and is capable of bringing the e-bike, while being operated at a speed of 30 km/h, to a full stop within 9 metres, on a level asphalt surface, from the point at which the brakes were applied
Removing the pedals makes the e-bike a motor vehicle, which requires a licence, insurance and registration to operate. It is also illegal to modify your e-bike's electric motor to make it more powerful or to increase the assisted speed of the bike.

first of all, RIP Brody, second, if the mom knew he didnt properly comprehend the rules of the road, why would she get him an ebike?

Put up a law that strictly prohibits ebikes on major highways. No access to busy traffic at all. And also put a age restriction from 14-17 since they're also coming to age of operating a small electric bike is like driving a mini motorcycle and restriction for them to enter any congested street traffic in downtown city areas.

There is a difference between e-bikes and e-dirt bikes, such as a surron. A surron is classified as a motorcycle, not an e-bike as it does not have pedals and can be easily unlocked to go 45+ mph.

Yeah, calling these e-bikes doesn't seem fitting. Hopefully we can develop naming conventions to differentiate better between the different types.

My two friends have those surron bikes and they aren’t dangerous until you make them dangerous

Sadly this is a tragic accident but I have to say this fault relies on both the child and the parents. Like I said with the one chip challenge kids want to do something popular especially around the age of kids/ teenager life and they're willing to do something dangerous that can potentially have grave consequences. I give out my condolences for the family but you also got to teach your child how to learn the ropes of the road especially when you're riding on a scooter e-bike any type of vehicle.
