Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. Thanks for stopping by.
Glad to see you doing flies from Churches book. It’s full of crazy good patterns, my favorite being the Nailer or the Baby doll both fabulous streamer patterns. For years they were the only streamers I fished. 😊👍
Oh man, the Baby Doll! That's one you don't hear about every day! And what about the Undertaker? Isn't that a similar one, albeit a much cooler name. :-)
@@SavageFlies I tied up a half dozen undertakers when I got the book just because of the name. 😂😂😂
It drives me crazy! Is this a sport, a hobby, a pastime or what? Definitely an obsession.
Yet again a fly that even I could tie, thank you again , all the best , David.
Great video as always Matt. Richard Walker was one of the most famous British anglers.
Cool to hear Neil! I think I've only come across his name in this book and the one by Taff Price. But I'm sure he's mentioned in plenty of others.
@@SavageFlies I think he has a Wikipedia page! He caught Clarissa the record carp in the UK.
Another nice one Matt, easy and productive. Thanks for sharing and keeping it real. Have a blessed day my friend.
Very nice looking fly for sure. I must’ve passed over it many times. Thx Matt. Have a great week!
Matt, thanks again for yet another wonderful fly. Hope you have a wonderful day today, # crazy about tying flies.
Another cool fly . I love how you find these crazy old patterns. Thanks for sharing Matt
You bet David! Good luck my friend. :-)
Matt, really crazy how you find these old flies to tie. your videos are entertaining. Thanks
Appreciate it Kevin! Good luck my friend. :-)
I really appreciate that you find interesting fly patterns to demonstrate that aren't CRAZY elaborate and complex for us newer fly tyers.
Haha! Yes indeed Thomas. Appreciate the note my friend. :-)
Crazy! Thanks for the tutorial, Matt!
The sheer number and variety of flies out there is crazy. Thanks for all your work Matt!
Its CRAZY that you find these older more traditional flies. Thank You
Enjoyed the Video, Thanks for Tying, That’s one crazy streamer that’s gonna catch loads of trout
Hello sir! Im a new tyer and Ive never seen a fly with more than one hackle before! CRAZY!
Thanks for the great videos. Hackle always makes me crazy
Nice crazy fly. Going to tie one today. Thanks!
That's a crazy cool fly, Matt. Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate it Mark!
CRAZY....Thanks matt and as always I will be watching...see ya joe.
I think that the names are just as unique as the patterns itself! Thank you for sharing this pattern, Matt! Tight lines! 😎🎣
Crazy, yep I resemble that remark. Great fly Matt. Thank you.
Hahaha! I think we're all a little crazy my friend. After all, we do tie dead animal materials onto hooks to try and catch fish. :-)
Good morning Matt that fly looks crazy to me 😊
CRAZY, I like looking through my old books for patterns, like this one. Have a great day!
CRAZY looking fly
Crazy! Like how you find these patterns and research the history of them.
Love these crazy lost flies you tie!
Appreciate it Dean!
Thanks Matt another great pattern. Now it’s time for you to take a few days off and go get Crazy!
Morning Matt. Mega Thx for another awesome video. The heat here in Southwestern WA State is crazy !
Nice to see some basic patterns with common materials. Great fly, I’m going to have to try it. Crazy.
Absolutely John! Go for it my friend. :-)
Matt, great video. I saw the Dambuster in Mike Dawes' book "The Flytiers Manual". It has a peacock herl body with a RED fluorescent wool tail and a single brown hackle at the head. It was used as a stillwater fly. Well, flies with peacock herl bodies are fish catchers. Thanks for another crazy pattern.
That’s a crazy nice piece of work! Thanks!
I'd be CRAZY not to give this a try! I really like how you find obscure patterns to tie for us. Going to see about obtaining that book. I've not heard of Bob Church. Your library is another reason I love your channel. Always educational!
Thanks Troy! Looks like one seller has a used copy on Amazon. It's probably worth 12 bucks. amzn.to/4dfHug0
Looks pretty cool matt.i love streamer fishing.i did more of it this year and did good.thanks for what your doing much appreciated
Matt, pretty CRAZY old fly, looks like it could be productive. Thanks for what you do for the community!
Crazy looking fly, man
That is a Crazy interesting fly. Nice tie as always.
That looks like a CRAZY fun tie. It's great to see these old patterns come alive. Keep up the good work, always enjoy watching.
Crazy! Keep finding odd old patterns and keep sharing them! Take care!
Nice work as always, Matt!! Crazy
Crazy name for a cool pattern. I wonder if the RAF's WW2 dambuster bouncing bomb inspired the tier to name it that. Crazy indeed. Thanks Matt.
Crazy Iv never fished a streamer I need to broaden my fly selection and learn how to fish them
Great question Joe! He said he used to fish it in tailwaters up near dams so I'm assuming that was it. But a bomb named the dambuster is pretty cool. Now you've got me off on a tangent reading the Wikipedia page on the bouncing bomb. :-)
@SavageFlies yeah, another person here mentioned the dambuster bouncing bomb. I've heard of walker and church before, but as I read dambuster and saw the fly I remembered the old newsreel I saw of them testing the bomb. Even the double hackle resembles the water spinning off of it as it bounced on the water. Walker was an all around fisherman, pretty clever at naming things. Thanks Matt. Hey, you like old classic flies, check out fly anorak-adam, cool stuff.
@@joeduca8582 Joe- thanks for the recommendation! I'm watching his channel right now. It is indeed pretty cool!
crazy looking fly.
you are crazy’s as al way love your tying instructions and leaving error as we all do keep tying and teaching
Haha! You know it would take me too long to edit out all my screw ups. :-)
Hope you have a crazy good time on your trip!
Kind of a crazy looking fly, I'm not sure I've seen a second hackle in the middle before. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.
Good morning ☕️☕️
You crazy GOAT😉
That is a crazy look fly, Matt
Definitely going to try this one out
Thanks for the video, Matt
Appreciate it Dave!
Thanks Matt for what you do I know I very much appreciate it. Your videos are very informative and fun to watch, Thank you sir!.
That streamer is crazy looking, but I bet it will catch fish.
Well thank you Jim!
That is pretty CRAZY how just a few materials tied on a hook can catch fish. Neat looking fly. Safe travels Matt
Appreciate it Jeff!
@@SavageFlies it is my pleasure Matt. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
That's an interesting Crazy tie for a streamer. Thanks!
Never seen that fly before! Crazy
I will have to try this pattern. I haven't fished much lately because it has been crazy hot here, but it will cool down someday.
I wonder if the fly got its name from the dambuster mission of WWII.
Great comment Mike! Someone else asked the same thing. It does make you wonder. :-)
Nice job Matt
Very nice pattern Matt. I could see it tied in a few color variations. Crazy of me to always want to make them my own.
Crazy. Nice pattern Matt I think I’m going to try this one with a softer more webby hackle. Thank you!
Always enjoy seeing one of your videos pop into my feed. CRAZY to think about how many fly patterns there are out there.
Yes indeed Dustin! Appreciate the note my friend. :-)
This CRAZY FLY would do the trick for bass and bluegill too i think.
Really enjoy your videos, knowledge and fun spirit of your work.
Appreciate it Galen! Good luck my friend. :-)
I really like the double hackle on this one and the tail could certainly be any other color. My hat is in my regular rotation of sun protection (those of us without hair know what I'm talking about!) and the sticker is on the back of my laptop! Thanks for all you do Matt!
Haha! That's awesome to hear Tom. Let me know if you ever want any more stickers. I think I had to order a minimum of 250 when I had them printed, and I've probably given out less than 50. :-)
That's crazy! Last night I was messing around and tied a fly from some stuff I had cluttering up my life and ended up with something close to this fly. I only had one hackle but I had the short yellow tail. Can't wait to fish it!
That's funny to hear! And yes, kind of crazy. :-)
I like this fly. The double hackle is CRAZY. Need to try this one.
Yes indeed Mike! Good luck my friend. :-)
Crazy that this fly is rare!
Thanks Matt. Crazy, but I like it.
Thanks for another great video. This looks like a good one to try on finicky panfish too.
Yes indeed! Maybe even some warmwater bass. :-)
This looks like a crazy fun fly
Yes indeed Greg!
My wife catches me watching your videos and goes crazy because she knows I’m going to be buying more fly tying material.
Hahaha! I love it Dale. My wife doesn't even monitor my purchases any more. She'll just see a squishy package arrive and ask, "More feathers?"
Looks like a steelhead pattern to me. I'll bet it drives them crazy!
Good morning Matt. ☕️time. That streamer should move some in the water with the two hackles. Very smoky here this morning. It’s been hot here and there are some forest fires up where I used to live that are providing the smoke. Hope you got out fishing this weekend. Take care Matt.
Is it from the wildfires near Chico? Those look terrible! As for fishing, no joy last weekend. Skunked two nights in a row on the Savage. I did have one monster come up for a natural material, turkey wing hopper. It was in a long shot of a hole, about 8-10 feet deep, with slow, smooth water on the surface. A big fish came up, head out of the water, turned on it, and then porpoised down. I got a good broadside look at him as I failed to set the hook. I'll bet he was in the 18-inch range. Oh well. He'll be there next time!
@@SavageFliesThe smoke here is likely coming from the fires in Alberta, the Jasper area has a couple bad ones. They took out part of the town of Jasper yesterday. 18” would be a pretty nice fish. Hopefully you get him next time.
nice fly Matt
That’s a CRAZY fly should be a good fishing fly
You don't have to be crazy to tie midges, but it helps.
I tied two of these, one for me and one for my fishing buddy. Just because, I added 2 strands of copper flashabou to the tail and used copper dyed hackle.
I enjoy seeing the UK flies. I think I'll tie it with some soft Pheasant hackle to see how that looks. Not too crazy. Thanks.
May be Crazy fun to fish
Its been a CRAZY day.
That is on crazy streamer. It will push a lot of water.
Crazy can apply to a lot of fishing. I was playing with a 2 wgt today, a couple of dry fly takes were crazy, as well as a few hits on Root Beer Midges. Mostly bluegill, some small green sunfish, an couple of Micro Bass. The dry fly was a simple mayfly size 18. Just a couple tail barbs, thread body and a couple wraps of hackle. And the weird catch of the day was a threadfin shad..
That is so cool to hear Lee! The green sunfish are so prevalent around here. The old timers used to say you can pull a fence post and after the first rain there will be green sunfish in the hole. :-)
Crazy Crazy Crazy
Did I mention how it's Crazy how many subscribers you have? Nice job on the channel Matt
Well thank you William! It's been four years since I started the channel but I'm still having fun. :-)
Crazy good!
I'm sure that would drive bluegill crazy!
I am going crazy, stuck in bed with a sprained left foot and a swelled up right knee with gout.
I wanna tie this pattern and fish it. UGH 😑 thanks again Matt.
Yikes! Sorry to hear that.
That is a crazy fly
It is indeed Steven!
Steven- congrats my friend; this comment is the winner! Send me an email with where you want me to send your hat. matt@savageflies.com
Just got into tyn flies and it is pretty crazy wht a good imagination can do even better whn u catch fish with it
Yes indeed my friend!
I'm going to try this fly. I'd be CRAZY not to. 😊
Hahaha! Good luck my friend. :-)
Cool fly Matt! I know it's CRAZY, but peacock catches fish.
Yes indeed Jim!
I'm not sure what it represents, but I'll bet it catches fish like crazy!
Nice fly Matt. Looks like a good book to have on hand also. Any really crazy patterns in that book?
CRAZY fly
I need to get my butt out and do some CRAZY fly fishing.
Yes you do Brady!
@@SavageFlies Caught a few Cutthroat on Grand Mesa in Colorado 4th of July weekend. Small little creek. High elevation so only around 8" or so.
Crazy steamer
Have fun on your days off. Don't go to crazy
I'd love to see some flies tied with some Crazy materials. Have you ever tied a fly with a snake skin shed?
No! That's certainly interesting though. I wonder how durable it would be. Have you ever used it?
@SavageFlies No I haven't. But I just started tying in Feb. I've never seen this material used but could envision it used for wings or fly body. I haven't run across any this season. I kayak on the Ohio and sometime run across some when fishing. I would think it would perform well under resin. Something to consider.
Crazy
Matt, did the original recipe specify the type of hackle? I’m guessing ringneck pheasant rear hackles would look pretty good. Either way, a small size #10 hook would catch panfish like CRAZY. ;-)
Nope, but it did say "ginger hen hackle" but the picture did not look at all like a soft hackle so I went with rooster. But not that I think about it, this fly might need to be weighted. At least a little.
Am I crazy to think I’ll get picked? I just need a new hat. Heading to Italy and I promise to wear it at the Stonfo store.
I've got plenty of hats my friend. Send me an email and I'll send one your way. :-) matt@savageflies.com
Crazy lazy days of summer......
I would love a sticker for my rod case, is that CRAZY?
Well if you don't win this one, send me an email and I'll drop on in the mail to you. :-) matt@savageflies.com
Crazy that I've never won any of these giveaways. Here's hoping it's my turn
I know it! You've been leaving comments on these things for years it seems! Tell you what- if you don't win this time, send me an email and I'll send you a hat just for fun. :-) matt@savageflies.com
Am I still crazy after all these years? Yup
Nice Paul Simon reference. :-)
crazy🤪🤪
Crazy that you call wet flies streamers.
Is this really a wet fly?? It was in a section with other baitfish patterns so I just assumed it was typically tied as a streamer!
When you say 40 years ago I still think that’s the 40s or 50s (80s kid). 1984 was 40 years ago!!!!
Which is CRAZY!!
Same here! And when we hear "turn of the century" guys like us think the 1900s. Today's kids hear that and are talking about the year 2000. :-)
@@SavageFlies yep we were at a comedy show and he said we were from the late 1900s made me laugh and be sad at the same time
