I strongly believe that Shunsui would be a great leader and stronger Head Captain of the Gotei 13, even more so than Yamamoto himself.
He's generously wise captain. He's probably know that will happen for Ukitake and Yamamoto for a better reason. So i don't think it's bitter ending tho.
A bit of a bitter sweet ending but I feel like the takeaway was the times of the older generations were over and time for the next generation of gotei 13 to step in. Genriyusai, Unohana, ukitake, and Komamura were part of the older violent generations tasked with protecting the soul society and it’s time to see how the new generation will handle it. Granted I feel if Kubo had more time the ending would be much different
