The Oracle is a massive Oracle database. She likely "smokes" to symbolize she's operating on a "cloud" platform. The Oracle gives out cookies because databases use tracking cookies to identify users on the network...that's why she seems to be psychic and know everyone's actions (because she tricks them into eating tracking cookies). Because she utilizes cloud computing, unlike the Architect who runs on traditional database architecture, she is able to perform complex data analysis that he can not. It's really that simple.

What do candy, cookies and smoking represent? Bad habits, compulsion, inhibition, pleasure seeking, emotion. The Oracle represents emotion, she is all too human, to contrast with the Architect; cold intellectualism, unapproachable. The Oracle speaks to Neo. The Architect speaks at Neo, disinterested at first, not even trying to make himself comprehendible to Neo. The Architect and the Oracle represent a binary opposition, intellect vs emotion.
The Oracle lives in the community, surrounded by children, whereas the Architect is remote surrounded by tv screens.

I think the oracle and the architect are colleagues who have VERY different personalities and have spent so much time around each other that they kinda getting on each other's nerves. You did a fan theory that suggested they are working together to perfect the Matrix and make it acceptable for all the humans existing within it. The architect builds them, the Oracle finds the problems, reports back, the Architect corrects/changes the problems, and they keep on going back and forth. I strongly suspect that they just need a vacation from their work AND each other.

The Merovingian demonstrated that food within the Matrix is code capable of manipulating the programs that ingest it. Therefore, the cookies that the Oracle bakes are code. The Oracle gives Neo a cookie to insert the code that will cause him to fall in love with Trinity and believe that he is the one. Cigarettes, are not code, per se, they represent data. So when the Oracle smokes she is inputting data to assess human behavioral responses to her stimuli. The Architect said that the variable choice made the Matrix 99% effective and the Oracle's goal is to get that last 1% to accept the Matrix programming. She is trying to do that by introducing love as a variable into the equation.
Or Hollywood put cigarettes in because the tobacco industry paid them.
I had considered that the ‘Oracle’ was a reflection of the Oracle of Delphi, who’s visions came from the noxious gases permeating the cave that she resided in, and her smoking was metaphor for the conduit of that imagery.

the repetition of the number 1 and the smoking always made me think of an older processor struggling to keep working at 100% because it has a single processing thread and a lot of different tasks. The smoking sort of indicates that she is from a different time where the conventions were different as well as hinting that she may in fact be breaking down in term of whatever hardware she is actually running on
I always saw the Architect and the Oracle as complementary programs - the Architect is designed to "balance the equation," while the Oracle is designed to "unbalance it" - in other words, to introduce the element of choice, which was discovered to be a necessary element for the functioning of the Matrix. Hence, the Architect couldn't understand choice because he wasn't programmed to, but the Oracle was.

I personally think the biggest thing to take from her conversation with Neo when he relays the information from the Architect that he received, is that she refers to the Architect as "that man," despite him clearly being a program. She does this with the big M too, "What do all men with power want, more power."
The Oracle, gives machines not just human pronouns, but even refers to their 'identities' as being partially human as well.
Smith called her mom and the architect referred to her as a she. Oracle isn't the only one referring to programs as human
Yes, they are programs, but most of them escaped the machine world to hide as people so they would refer to themselves like people as for the Oracle, I would put it as learned speech

The subway station scene when Neo has met with the family a little bit reveal these programs develop feeling and emotions. These are high tech AI's, I think this is the reason why they have feelings, habits and the movie want to showing this.
Yes, exactly. The irony is after being created by humans and resisting them, the machines created their own new form of life, which resists them.
This video actually made me think of a few questions I can’t believe I never thought about, what is the right age to be freed? Like was the IRS hacked by an 11 year old girl? How old was Cypher when he was “deceived” by Morpheus? Who else was in their 30’s when the resistance freed them?
She doesn't just smoke, she eats them cigs like tacos.
I always got the feeling that the oracle is a manifestation of empathy from the machines. The machines understand that they have to use the humans to survive but they have to have some level of love for them. The human spark in machines that we have hardwired into them as our creations. The true interface.
My interpretation of the Oracle saying "please" in the regards to the Architect's claim of Zion being destroyed, is that because Neo chose to return to the Matrix and save Trinity -- unlike the other Ones -- and the Architect doesn't know what will happen.
The Architect can predict events because he's accrued data from the previous versions of the Matrix. He can't predict events that never happened -- the "change" the Oracle refers to.
The Oracle and Neo cant see beyond their own choices because they dont know their ramifications. The Oracle made a decision to surrender her fate to Neo by letting Smith assimilate her. And Neo chose the path of the Oracle, which led him to sacrifice himself to save Zion.

The whole Path of the One itself is a simulation meant to investigate certain emotions. In this case the human emotion of love. It is a common theme and it is essential to Neo's power. In fact everyone of his powers and major accomplishments have been tied to when he felt that particular emotion. Powers Activated by Trinity's words, discovering wireless connection after he saved her, being able to see the code in the real world after his fight with Bane, and having the strength to continue on without anything holding him back after he lost his one true love.
@magicblanket it worked out well considering that they had humans enslaved for 600 years if you count the cycles as once every 100. Humans were desperate enough to listen to a program without much question. They took complete advantage of our other weakness which is hope.
I have been told in a discussion on another video on this channel that the Wachowskis called Smith a cancer. It makes sense. He is part of the system, but replicates himself incontrollably. For that reason I find it a nice detail that he gets to the Oracle. The chainsmoking program is killed by the cancer program. It's fixed later, but still.
In another video you alluded to the ingestion of foreign code by mouth through the Oracle’s food. Perhaps the second hand cigarette smoke Neo and others inhale has some slight code modification potential?
Your description of The Oracle reminds me of how in The Lord Of The Ring universe the Wizards/minor angels decided to take on the form of Old men plainly dressed in robes instead of their true beautiful majestic ppearance because they knew it would make them more enduring, and easier to trust by mortals.
What I don't get is how nobody in Xion hadn't already figured out the Oracle is a program? It's pretty obvious, as she herself admits! If she were a human 'red pill', then where the hell is her physical body in the real world? Had nobody in the resistance ever bothered to ask???
All right, I like this question a lot and I think I have the answer you seek, you have to keep in mind any human red pills or even the fully human ones back and Zion have only been around for about 100 years. We don’t really know what they know, but it’s pretty clear they don’t really know much. They might not even be aware of programs outside of agents that look like humans.
Thought I had a good handle on the Matrix movies but, after watching your videos open me to a new understanding. Every video on your channel is well though out, always to the point. I never trusted the Oracle but I had no idea she was a program of the machines. The machines could destroy Zion if they wanted too, so it has to be part of the system of control. Morpheus was manipulated by the Oracle in believing in a chosen one. So much great content "Matrix Explained"

Lots of good info here. Smoking = the cloud. Cookies = tracking cookies. The candy she eats on the park bench looks like a red pill. This all seems legit. But in a more general sense, cigs and sugar. Yes, they give her a more human element. Programs would not harm themselves with such unnecessary things. But maybe they represent reasons not to trust her too? I am glad you made this video, I remember wondering that originally.

The Merovingian sends a cake program to a woman in Reloaded, physically affecting her, is the Oracle doing the same? Is the Cookie/Candy actually a program that affects Neo, making him more accepting of the Oracles words or some other effect?

Aside from that, the factors do make sense in the illusion of the Oracle.
The age-old debate: free will vs. destiny. The idea that choice is just an illusion bums me out. When I was in college, I used to think to myself, "No one is controlling me. If I wanted to, I could jump up on my desk, start screaming and acting like a maniac." And yet I never did. The plans are man's; but the odds are God's.
yet you never did, why? Because there was no reason to. You are not free to choose, the choice is just an outcome of all the causes. The real freedom is seeing through this and being free from the illusion. Than you start to realize you are not this or that, there is no spoon.

Does this make Neo a program, even Trinity? An anomaly usually is detected within the memory. If they are glitches within the program then that means they are not human either. That means that Neo hasn't figured out that he's not human, yet. He's like a virus or malware that keeps popping up.

@@jayroman1978 thx, also on second thought, there is a probability that the merowinger entrance called mobil ave is just one of different kind of entrances to the matrix. it's like you'd think the internet gateway we use now that can be routed through different IP's and stuff.
so untrusted wifi connections from neo could land in mobil ave. this changed when neo got administrator rights like the other theory suggested when visiting the architect with the key
Second part of the video answers the question in the first part: the Oracle smokes because she is an intuitive program. Smoking, baking cookies, eating candy--is all how she better understands human beings, which is her job.

I just realized that Oracle was having the red pill on the park 2:26. And cookies in computer lingo is an information that a program stores in another program. For example, webstores install cookies in your local browser. The same way, Oracle stores cookies in other avatars.

What if Morpheus and Niobi were previously like Neo and Trinity? Morpheus could have previously been the One and Niobi was the one that fell in love with him. Once the matrix was rebooted Morpheus became basically a leader who retained some of his memories of being the one or somehow gained them over time. That’s how he would know there would be another One who would come and end the war. Neo, in the forth installment will basically take the role of Morpheus
The Oracle smokes as a reference to the Oracle of Delphi. There are a couple of references to the importance of smoke here.

Do a search for Pythia over on Wikipedia for way more than you ever wanted to know about the subject. Essentially, a priestess would breath in the magic smoke and start to have visions of the future. These would be interpreted by someone not quite so intoxicated to advise thier clients of what was to come. It would have actually be kind of weird if they didn't have the Oracle smoke with the rich mixture of philosophy and religion the Matrix has built in.

It's clearer when you realize he isn't a construction architect, but he is in fact a choice architect. He's the same as the Oracle. One nudges Neo toward saving humans and the other toward the status quo.

Nice video, I’d like to talk to “the illusion of choice”. I think it’s reasonable to define choice as a selection out of realisable alternatives. This would mean choice is an illusion in determinism.
But if we look at what a choice is cognitively, and we differentiate that process, deterministically and mechanistically, we see that choices are merely a selection from considerable alternatives.
Neo DID choose between red and blue under this definition, he just did not do so of any so called “free will”. He did not make a “free choice”. His brain certainly made a determined selection from considerable alternatives.
At 5:28 the Architect is holding his pen like one would hold a cigarette...hmmmm.
What are mirrors/reflective surfaces in the matrix...do the machines use reflections for any other purpose other than to check their hair?

They are also speaking metaphorically. Its probably wise not to over extend their metaphors or apply to them meaning that may not actually apply. Just because he is ths " father" of the matrix and she's the "mother" doesnt at all mean that they are posessed of any romantic or pleasant feelings toward each others. They are after all programs, sentient and intelligent perhaps and even worthy of being classified as lifeforms in their own right, but that doesnt mean that they are or ever were together in that sense.

All I know, is it took me a lot of sweat a few tears and one or two balling's out by the instructor's and the tower to be able to fly helicopter's, but it was worth it, an incredible journey, I would recommend to anybody to give it a go. Being able to download it I would have missed so much.
I never thought she wasn't a program. Morpheus says before we meet her that she was with the resistance since the beginning, and the time depth that implies is almost certainly longer than a single human lifetime. Also, she's predicting probabilities within the context of an extremely complex computer system within which we already there are anthropomorphic programs, so why would anyone ever not think she's a program?

After the scene with the Merovingian, I was convinced and still am, that the food is always some type of program to accomplish something. Now with the topic of choice, I don’t think that choice is an illusion per se as much is like the oracle would say you have already made the choice you’re trying to understand why. you already make the decisions you’re going to make the only thing you can change theoretically is yourself.

I think the Oracle does things like smoke and bake cookies because that's what humans do. She learns by immersing herself in human behavior. She sits on a public park bench like the lowliest of humans. She smokes because it's a dirty habit of egotistical. She is humble. But she talks in a cryptic fashion like fortune teller. She willingly gives answers to questions, but they are vague and obtuse.
The Architect on the other hand lives in isolation in a sterile office building. He observes human activity but doesn't join in. He lives in an ivory tower. But you can never truly understand things like love and hope until you experience them. He speaks in a precise, technical fashion -- like a lawyer trying to be perfect in every word. He is egitistical.
Architect and oracle are human ideal and ideas in a program form not the emotions that lead to them so even with 100× more logic than a human they can't fully understand what makes humans so persistent and the gift of some kind of belief that drives them harder

A lot of duality here and alchemical symbolism. The architect symbolizing logic and rationality. The oracle representing emotion. Like the Merovingian once said, choice is an illusion created by those with power.

Can you further explain why the Oracle’s appearance changed? I know the real reason was because Gloria Foster (The original Oracle) passed away before the 3rd Matrix was made but what was the choice the Oracle had to make that made her appearance change? The answer she gave in the Matrix Revolutions was vague and somewhat questionable. I would love to know the answer to this question. Thanks! This channel is awesome btw! She traded the deletion codes to her shell appearance with the merovingian to get sati out of the matrix. This is explained in the video game i forget the name
@@traviousandrews1015 Correct, her and her parents were scheduled for deletion, so they sold out the location of the Oracle's shell to the Merovingian to grant Sati safe passage into the Matrix for protection. He then destroyed her shell. It was quite the clever pivot to dealing with a character dying mid production.

Was the Oracle lying about the Architect? If he could calculate that Neo inevitably reaching him was going to happen, why wouldn’t he then take another modus operandi and abandon his posture against Neo’s rising? They’re programs, not humans with a finite moment of time to exist, so the pursuit of money and other things humans fight over aren’t important.
It sounds to me like the Oracle told the truth. She DOES in fact know more than The Architect, because she’s been sitting in her little apartment, smoking her cigarettes, helping babies and baking cookies knowing that their digital world has just as many problems as the human one did and eventually those on the bottom (humans) would find a way to the top like they (the machines) did.
