Thank you for your kind words & taking the time to view my video. It's really appreciated. I have been enjoying your content a lot, it has been inspiring me to find the drive & time to create the content I've wanted to on here with all the equipment I've squirreled away. Haha Now options are opening up again it feels like a more enjoyable project to pursue after waiting soo long. Wish you well & enjoy your trip. Look forward to it. 👍🏻
Hello, It's open for hot drinks/basic menu according to Facebook until they get stock, fridges/freezers running etc. 🥳🥳🥳 I just found out this morning, great news for all. You have to treat yourself to a Birthday Animal Burger. It would be criminal not to. Haha Happy Birthday Mate, hope you enjoy your weekend & there's good weather for your ride out. 👍🏻
There used to be one at the bottom of Chelsea bridge in the 60s . We always stopped there when we came out of the night clubs on a Sunday morning ! In those days you could just pull up on the bridge and you could park anywhere in londons westend at night!..where have all the good times gone!??
Living in Battersea, I often visited the Chelsea bridge yea hut, just opposite the gates to Battersea park. Many bikers or custom car chaps would pull up, never any issues. I also had the pleasure of taking my very posh lady friend to the Black heath hut, for a dog roll and a tea. I only found out later that she feared it was a roll with dog in it😂 she had never heard of it before. She was mighty pleased to see a sausage in the role.
'I used to be a bus driver out of Plumstead bus garage. When we had a early turn duty early in the morning and had to run light to Peckham (route 177) or run light to White hall (route 53) we would often stop on route to grab a Coffee and a packet of Crisp's. because of the way the road was we used to pull up right next to it and step off the bus at the serving window. I did that more times then I can remember. I miss that place, It was an icon....
Things have changed a lot. One being the value for money in places... Amazing share, thank you. I bet being a bus driver was a lot more "fun" then too, must be dire these days. 😅
The tea hut you show at the start, was on Blackheath in South London.Very popular with police and everyone wanting a bite to eat. It sadly was smashed into over 10 years ago by a car. They never rebuilt it. I think it was there from the 1920s.
Hi Richard, Thank you for your comment. Just to update you, the tea hut reopened in late August of 2021. They had a new modernised hut constructed, it was set down in the exact same location rather than being set further back from the road. I have yet to visit to produce a video of the famous "animal burger" but I have been past to check it out. It also now has reduced opening hours so is no longer a late night stop for cabbies, lorry drivers or late night drunken munchies.
A good information video. As something I drove past on many occasions it would be a good thing if this could be brought back. However, it would have to remain on the same site as the previous one, as moving across the road would involve more risks of people crossing the busy road. By keeping it on the original site customers could park on the side road and safely walk to hut. 👍🏽👍🏽
Yes indeed, there is a back road off the main A2 to the toilet block with bays for parking/pulling over. Current plans are for it to be set further back from original spot away from junction. Parking in Goffers Road was possibly going to be removed at one point. I believe this, the fact the owner would love to convert the block into a premises for his business & Greenwich Council wanted to sell it is why that is being pursued/dreamed of. Thanks for the comment & adding to the discussion. Stay well. 👍🏻
I first discovered the hut when i used to work for the funfair that pulled on the common, all the lads used to go there at night when the fair shut back, was back in the 80s,but i remember a converted mini van that served tea n hot dogs parked next to it.When i first started driving we used to go there regular. Its a special place for me,had no idea this had happened.
Amazing share. Thanks for taking the time to comment. It just goes to show how long it's been going & what part it played in many people's lives/fond memories. Just to update you, it is back open in full swing, new hut but reduced hours. I still plan on revisiting soon to try the famous "Animal Burger" but have not made the journey just yet.
@@H8inLyfe Do you know of the converted Mini van,it was there regularly i the 80s,late at night when the hut was shut,i,d never seen anything like it.Amazing he could produce so many burgers, hot dogs n tea from it.
No, unfortunately that was before I was old enough, I was born in the 80's. I wish there were more images of the hut throughout the years for documentation as it's just one of those curiosities... I would have first visited the tea hut in the late '90s.
I've known this tea but as a landmark since my early child hood. Having recovered from a brain injury and now taken early retirement, if any further planning issues arise , I'd be happy to help. It's part of my life having driven past it many times so if they need any help just let me know.
Hello, If you happen to see this reply, the tea hut has now been replaced & reopened, in late August 2021. A brand new hut set a little further back from it's original spot. 😊 Thanks for commenting & offering help. 👍🏻
Thank you, appreciated. I still need to do a "part 2" where I go revisit the site, now it's open & try the food etc. It's on the list. Have a good weekend 👍🏻
I,d often get an animal burger from there in the early nineties on the way home from work for £2.50, most expensive thing on the menu and worth every penny 😅
They got too expensive like the burger vans, started charging same as a cafe with less overheads Or charging same as Costa or the other rip off coffee shops !!
Ahhh that is unfortunate to hear. It was a great place to grab cheap eats & the portions were super generous too, massive cake slices & burgers. I guess I will find out soon just how much it has changed. I am planning to travel down, visit & do an update video with food review. Thanks for sharing the info. 👍🏻
@tooyoungtobeold8756 Yes it sure is. Have you visited? Back with a new hut & in full swing albeit not 24hrs any more. I hope to get back down there this year to check the famous animal burger out, probably when it's a little warmer... 😅
Great if it is . I used to stop there in the 60s when I was mini cabbing in Lewisham . Also used to be a all night one on one of the London bridges .Used to pull up there in early hours in a 4o foot artic and have a break and a cuppa. Imagine trying to do that these days.
Welling is a nice area. Very close too. The hut became somewhat iconic. It's nice to see how many people know of it, have past memories of visiting. I hope it hasn't changed too much...
THE TEA HUT IS BACK! Sometime soon we will visit & bare witness to the return of the monstrous ANIMAL BURGER!
Very informative video - it was great to re-visit this place this week with a new premises
I will try the animal burger on my next visit 👍

@@H8inLyfe just about to pitch for funding for a community project that would recognize this as a heritage location 😊

Long live the tea hut, a BRITISH institution.

These icons still live on as greasy spoon burger trailers are carrying the batton 😢
You are not wrong but the good ones, they are tucked away. Only those who know, know... 😅
enjoyed this

Haha £2.50... what a bargain. Still, when I was in on the secret it was £5.00. Never a better penny spent as you said. 👍🏻
