Hey Dave! I have a 1964 bolens 600. The harder I run it,the better it runs. The original motor was wore out, In 2017 I bought a 7 HP Hemi predator engine from harbor freight. Plus I made an adapter plate for it. Runs great.
Man was that last part true. I’ve been fixing up all of my things since forever. All the newer stuff i have to fix so much more often unless i buy from local businesses. Thanks for a great video.

I have 3 horses,oldest ia a 1972 i use every week with a 48" deck,14 hp kohler,keep the oil changed they will last a lifetime,grease fittings on all moveable parts,shame they sold out,Crip in ohio

Man wish that I would have found your vedios sooner. Got me a c-121 for 50$. Those horse's do run and live for a long time. Keep them coming job well done.
Was just werken on my "new" Wheelhorse;; a 1998 D 520,as it was abused,neglected& just served 24 years of "Hard Labor" & traded in fer an "orange unit". With a good de-greasing, adjustments, PROPER lubrication (every joint very dry, but still good) @ 942 hours it will live another 1000-2000 hours VERY EASY. This machine like the other's in the "fleet" are VERY FUEL EFFICIENT. Once upon a time l had a "Crapsman" 26hp hydrostatic "Excelerator Model" 54" cut for my 2 acre yard for grass cutting dutys---what a piece of JUNK! Just wanted to give my 1994 C 160 hydro 900hr machine a "break"---/--- what a MISTAKE. At 3500.oo$ ,a 6.5 gal fuel tank was only capable of cutting 3 acres before it " Guzzled" through the fuel--- Very UN- ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY. Where as "any" of my Wheelhorse's can cut 4 acres on 2.5 gallons of fuel== 6 times MORE EFFICENT:: MIRACULOUSLY FAR Superior! With the advent of the "new fangled ZERO turn mower-syckels" ,this gas guzzinling Continues. My biggest & easy joy is spending 1.25 hours per week mowing 2 acres per week on "only" 1.15 gals of gasoline.Thanks for the great Video Sir and happy safe "Wheelhorse-powering".
Man, I love me that stuff built to last!!! They make stuff that doesn't last and charge 5-10 times as much. No sense in that at all. And mechanical beats electrical for any kind of motor driven anything in my book. Nice job!

Thanks TSP! As far as tinkering goes...this thing was about as easy to work on as anything gets. If it were any simpler it would be an old OMC outboard.
I had an old Bolens that I started to restore. I rebuilt the deck new spindles and pulleys and blades and belts. I ordered alot of the stuff from ebay but then I found a guy a few miles from here that ran a lawnmower salvage yard and got a lot from him. This tractor even had wheel weights. This thing was a beast. My regular modern rider (Husqvarna) isn't half the weight. I'm not sure, but I don't think they build things like that anymore.
One of my weaknesses is those kick ass old school garden tractors !! Huge JD fan and I have several but always loved wheel horse too !! And I agree! Build some that lasts 40 plus years then you’ve got something !!
I couldn't agree more- when we went to a disposable society in the 70's that's where we really went wrong. Things should be built to last and treated as such. Great job!!
Thanks Chris, I just like stuff I can actually work on.....and thats another thing...not just that things should be built to last, but also built to be fixed, with simple durable designs. Thats what the environmental movement could put all its energy into. Thats green. Build something that won't go straight into a landfill and stop the manufacturing of NON fixable equipment.
It went that way in the 70's because that when we found out that the planet wasn't going to surpport what was coming and our leaders opened the flood gates to anyone who wants to build themselves a personal fortune and try to survive the coming extinction. Can't run an ever expanding economy by building things which last and that most of us can fix ourselves you need disposable and fancy new to be in vogue. We don't have long left now but Dave sure makes it better with his common sense approach and his down to Earth life style. Let's all be Radical!

Love your vids man, I just traded an old dirt bike for a old 60s wheel horse tractor similar to this one. The raider 10, can’t wait to start wrenching on it. The guy gave me the tractor, a plow, snow chains and a trailer for it.
I agree with the second choice as well. The new ones are just junk. May get 2 to 3 years without any problems then all hell breaks loose, and that's with babying it to death. God forbid you have to use it over tough terrain, or hauling a lil trailer full of manure. BTW seen what happend to your wifes camera. THAT SUCKS! I got mine running again by immediatly pulling the battery and opening it up and setting it over the heater vent for a week to let it dry out. Probably to late to do it now for yours, you have to be quick right after it happens but who knows you might get lucky. Thanks for posting, great vidja
Up and running, cleaned the tank and carb adjusted the clutch assembly, sharpened the blades mowed my weeds and 2 of my neighbors lawns. listed that PIA Craftsman LT1000 I been using on Craigslist. @@Bushradical I dumped that Anemic Briggs and that clutch and dropped a 13HP honda in I sold the deck for 200 bucks the thing is way more useful as a tractor and really came alive with the Honda bolted right in too.
dave i have 5 gave 58 away should have kept it = go3 63 with deck 7 hp ? got 70 used it for parts good motor transrear got 312-8 1985 runs great then my fav 1990 with plow - deck =62 has old farm plow did my garden 30 - 48 did great love horses === my only gripe theres no stainless steel pullys or decks so no rust ih ho silver

How do I push a 1970's Craftman riding lawnmower? Cant find any mechanism that just pulls out like on my newer lawnmowers that enables me to push it manually.
Dave, as a 60 year old woman, even I can work on my truck, a wonderful 1970 C10 long bed pickup whose name is Bessie. I love my Bessie and I love the simplicity of how she was built to last. Old things are special. Great video!
I totally agree. A lot of old equipment is just meant to be fixed and repaired. There is no reason ( aside from rust) that an old piece of gear can't be kept in service with a little attention.

Great job Dave. I really like your farm, piece of paradise. I grew up on a family farm here in Ohio, so I can appreciate being out, far removed from the rat race of the urban jungle. That belt is too tight, the clutch pedel needs full travel to disengage the belt from the trans or else sometime the belt still spins with the clutch depressed and can result in stripping gears when you try to shift. It should take a 5/8x83in
Bushradical no problem, also some people might tell you that you need cloth sided belts due to the fact the clutch mechanism just slips the belt when the clutch is pressed but I’m using a regular rubber v-belt and it’s working fine

Its so simple. Just a cast iron engine hooked to a cast iron gear box tranny with a belt, a couple tires and a seat!

Boles are cool. I'd like to get a JD 112 just to tinker with. You don't see many Bolens around though.

I got a wheelhorse charger 10 Automatic. It's been a great work horse. Now got a transmission leak. Hope it's not going to be a headache.
