  • When it comes to producing a winner, the elements of a fine wine and a champion Thoroughbred look rather alike. Each is built on a foundation of intricate detail that leaves nothing to chance, and both are given the opportunity to flourish through an impeccably high standard of care that lasts a lifetime. In Rachel Alexandra, Barbara Banke has discovered exactly that. We visit her at Stonestreet Farm to check in on her life today.

      Huh, interesting to know, I know in some areas breeding mates through surrogates is becoming more popular so the mare can continue to work and prove herself. Interesting that doing such a thing hasn’t crossed into thoroughbred racing’s.

      @Chrisoula17 5 лет назад +2

      nay rod, I agree. Both Rachel and Zenny would have won the Triple Crown.

    • @marysueeasteregg
      @marysueeasteregg 3 года назад +1

      Neither one would have won. Zenyatta didn't make a start until late November of her 3-year-old year, 6 months+ after the Kentucky Derby is run. She was not ready for a maiden race, much less the Triple Crown grind, in the spring of 2007.
      There are other reasons to think Z might not have won any TC race, much less the series, even if she had matured more quickly.
      1) Though Zenyatta handled 1 1/4 miles well, that doesn't mean she would have handled 1 1/2 miles well. I strongly think she would have, but we don't know. Some horses accomplished at 10 furlongs pretty much collapse at 12 furlongs. 2) There is reason to think she did not like the Churchill Downs surface. Her sole loss, her second Breeders' Cup Classic start, was run at Churchill Downs, home of the Derby. She trailed unusually far back early in the race, and some observers insist she was struggling with the surface. (I think Mike Smith said that, too, but I could be mistaken on that point.) Churchill Downs is a quirky track, and a fair amount of horses do not like it. Seventeen of Z's career starts were on synthetic, not dirt.
      3) She would have had to beat Curlin in the Preakness. Curlin, whom she never met, ran the second-fastest Preakness this century, and the 4th fastest since 1974. Curlin, a 2-time Horse of the Year, and a first-year-vote Hall of Famer like Z and Rachel, was better (overall, but especially on dirt) than any horse I remember Zenyatta ever facing. Gio Ponti, Blame and Ginger Punch were all outstanding racehorses, but not Hall of Famers. (Gio Ponti has been nominated for several years, and has failed to make it.) Curlin did not like synthetic, and would have been outmatched by Zenyatta on that surface. But the Preakness is on dirt. And I'm not sure huge-framed Z would have handled Pimlico's tight curves.
      The argument against Rachel Alexandra is simpler. Rachel was a brilliant middle distance (1 1/6 and 1 1/8 miles) horse. But she lost her only race at 1 1/4 miles (against females), and she was, as Sophia says, hard-pressed, and lucky, to win the 1 3/16 mile Preakness, the shortest of the Triple Crown races. I loved Rachel, like Z one of the best fillies I've seen, but she was *NOT* suited for the 1 1/4 mile Kentucky Derby and 1 1/2 mile Belmont. I believe Zenyatta could have handled the 12 furlongs of the Belmont. Rachel, no way.
      It's a shame that none of the truly great horses of that era -- Zenyatta (2004), Curlin (2004), Rachel Alexandra (2006), Sea The Stars (2006) who is one of Europe's all-time greats, and the great, undefeated Australian sprinter Black Caviar (2006) -- ever got to face each other.

      @@marysueeasteregg Hope life finds you still doing well. Cool comment. We'll 'never' truly know what Rachel was really fully capable of at 3. Her 4 year old resume cannot be accurately measured because of the fact She was turned out to pasture for 5 months AFTER the Woodward. She simply wasn't handled as she was from a 2 year old thru her 3 year old campaign. They didn't keep her in training after the Woodward. _______To say she got lucky in the Preakness though. Wait... whaaaattttt? That could very well be her 'best' race. She had to clear from the 13 hole all the way to the 1/2 mile pole. She had to outrun Big Drama (Breeders Cup Sprint winner) and American Pharoah's daddy (Pioneer of the Nile) not to mention the rest of best 3 year old Colts FROM the Gate entire way eyeballs to eyeballs. She literally cruised to victory. She DESTROYED those 3 year old Colts til the top of the stretch. Kentucky Derby 2nd place finisher P. of the Nile beaten 26 lengths. Crushed his Ego. BTW: You left out the Great "Frankel" (2008) Sport of Kings ! No Equal... Cheers!

      @@dabking3611 Tomato Cans ? lol Flightline something else for sure. Rachel's real campaign was as a 3 year old. Same as Secretariat. Zenyatta didn't even break her maiden until her last 40 days a a 3 year old. She had "3" lifetime starts on DIRT. Pedestrian fractions. Nothing remotely impressive time wise. She was also 2 years older than Rachel when Rachel won Horse of the Year. Rachels 3 year old Resume will probably NEVER be surpassed. Flightline was 'brilliantly' trained and intelligently lightly raced. A Monster tho absolutely for sure. Easy Goer would be a serious horse race against Flightline. Let's not Kid ourselves. lol Seriously? Nobody can be compared to Spectacular Bid's 4 year old resume though. Facts, not opinions. The Sport of Kings ! No Equal ! Keep the Spirit... Cheers
