Azumas Galore on
The Day Tangmere Broke
Plenty of Freight for a Saturday
And I make an error
21 09 24
It was the busiest I've seen Carlisle for many a day. Azumas interleaving with the Pendolinos and 397s and occasional TransPennine 802. Mope surprising was the freight passing through. We haven't seen a log train on a Saturday for a while. The Tesco intermodal was late and a short convoy of GB Railfreight 66s passed through.
My error was due to Tangmere fatigue. Not only did I miss the Cumbrian Mountain Pullman head out to Upperby, I went into town for a walk when it returned and departed for the Settle & Carlisle line.
It was only later that word got through that Tangmere had failed somewhere south of Appleby. I've summarised the following hours for West Coast in my record of the following day's rescue from Kirkby Stephen - 'Rescuing Stricken Tangmere'.
The times shown on clips are for guidance only and shouldn't be taken as definitive.
Any observations are my own and not intended to show any authority and may show my misunderstanding.

When the 390 getting replaced do we know?
So the diverted Azumas stop at Carlisle - that's a bit weird but I guess someone wanting a less comfy (barely) ride to Newcastle might jump at the chance?? :)
Wasnt allowed last year. Costs though compared to Northern.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways If only they could sell it on the comfier ride - I've only ridden Azumas on decent rail, I imagine the trip along the Tyne Valley is a bit of a boneshaker (even HSTS struggled and they rode WAY WAY better than Azumas)
Busy old day that was Les, lovely variety as ever!
Excellent video
Glad you liked it
Do Tescos get the delay repay when their train is late?
Haha I doubt DRS get their clubcard points though
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Every little helps!
Hello Les! Sorry to hear you missed the Cumbrian because of the Tangmere episode, but still a great collection of trains. Obviously, some wonderful shots of Azumas and some colorful freight! Even TPE and Scotrail in the background! Seeing Azumas really does put me right back in the UK. Cheers!
Cool, thanks. I missed tngmere more because of hunger and tiredness lol. It would have been hard to capture the incident with Tangmere. But you've see what happened the following day.
"Tangmere came in.... It went out again, but I didn't see that" 😂😂
Tangmere fatigue lol.
Always good to see the diverted LNER Azumas coming through Carlisle makes a nice change.
And only for 3 weeks this year. Keeps the place feeling busy.
Just an observation, there seems to be a point/switch missing. There is no direct route in the west platforms in the station to the south bound main line in the station confines. There is a route to Newcastle/Leeds eastbound may require a double slip to go south bound also. Obviously there is an out of site apposing crossing, from north bound line to south bound, to the yard facilities
Going south the Newcastle and S&C lines are accessible from all roads but the Maryport line is only accessible from P1-3 and the Holding sidings. Only single slips - the only double slip is at the neck of the three Holding Sidings and A road all adjacent to P1.
I love Carlisle. Fantastic city and station
@@keithjones9054 good to hear
Another fantastic video les & did u get to see the class 20s top tailed at Carlisle when they were heading to Joppa straight & back & i and see something from westcoast Railways is heading to aberdeen & passing Carlisle & Larbert today
I didnt see the 20s either day. The Northern Belle stock came through as we during the steam charter layover
@@LeslieGilpinRailways ah no worries managed to the the 57s on the westcoast Railways
Tangmer's departure most likely looked like the last one you saw. Shame you did not choose a trip to Kirkby Stephen to see her and get something of the failure but it took hours so may not of been a good idea either really. I see they hurried a Black 5 from Scotland over night for the weekend charter
I got the effects of the failure the following day. I'd have been around a while to see what went on at KS.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Yes I saw your video of the rescue and the comments about total destruction not that I have found the video he was going on about.
