  • We've picked peaches from four different peach varieties this year and Contender is the clear winner!! The pit is smaller, they ripened more evenly, and they are juicy, not mealy. I've canned a total of 71 quarts of peaches in the past few weeks! And I froze 48 pints. What you call a good year.

The spatula doesn't pit them, but it acts as a wedge to separate the halves. Done canning peaches, so no demo! 😁

That’s it - I’m planting a peach tree. Or two. Nice!

OK, as a caveat...This spring the weather was perfect as we had no late frosts, and no winter warm up and then a cold snap. About 1 out of every 3 years are good! But the good thing is that they bear young--at about 2-3 years after planting. Not like apple trees.

@@heresmyindianagardenandkit5003 Thanks for the info! I was planning on an apple too but not sure which one. There was an asian pear tree here when we moved in and it has done well. I only have a half acre 😁

😅 So peach varieties depend on your gardening zone. I think we are zone 5 here--and when we've had winters with several days of -10F or more, we've lost trees. We have Starking Delicious (Start Brothers exclusive) and Reliance (hardy) and July Elberta and regular Elberta. The Elbertas are still young so not sure how they will produce yet. All free-stone.

Where did you get your contender tree? I would love to plant a peach tree.

We bought it through Stark Bros. but it is a common variety--possible that even G & M Amish nursery sells it. 250 S. and 300 W, more or less. plant in the spring, though.
