In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Guruh Gipsy's 70s prog classic: Indonesia Maharddika
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Hi Dean, you should check the reworked version of this song here ruclips.net/video/GkfBYlWKCu8/видео.html it's packed with Indonesia's top musicians even Rick wakeman of YES plays solo on this track.
Wow, cool, thanks for the link.
Great Indonesian band. It's like Italian prog rock. President Sukarno's son was amazing.
Thats indo rock
An Indonesian prog rock fan here. We had some great prog rock band in the 70s:
- Shark Move, which was heavily Pink Floyd-inspired. Probably our 1st prog band.
- Giant Step: a mix of Genesis, ELP, Yes. Still existed till mid 80s, while also embraced a radio-friendly pop-rock theme.
- Guruh Gipsy (a collaboration of Guruh Soekarnoputra, one of the sons of our 1st president, with Gipsy). Also heavily ELP and Yes influenced, injected with Balinese taste. Unfortunately this is their only album. I'd say this is the pinnacle of Indonesian prog rock album. Even until today.
AFAIK, this album was officialy released only in casette form. If you buy the vinyl or CD, very likely bootlegged.
BTW, definitely will recommend Harry Roesli's works, e.g "Titik Api" or "Ken Arok" (also available in RUclips). He took a very different approach, though. Very Frank Zappa-ish.
Thanks for the info, will explore more at a future date
Benny Soebardja father of Indonesian prog-rock.
Hello Dean wolf..
In 1970- 80 in indonesia there was fever of Progresive rock music, guruh Gipsy were the pioneer of progesive Rock in Indonesia.
In 1970- 80 year ago, King Crimson, YES Genesis , Kansas, Man fred Man was Very famous in Indonesia.
In 1974 Deep Purple had a concert in Indonesia
Its was the first big band in the world to Concert indonesia..
Thanks to for reacting to the Indonesia legend Band.
Sory my english very bad.
what makes this song even more special is that every verse in the lyrics when connected, is an acronym for the names of their band members.
Oding Nasution - Guitar
Roni Nasution - Piano, organ
Kinan Nasution - Vocal, drum
Abadi Soesman - Synthesizer
Chrisye - Bass
Guruh Soekarnoputra - Gamelan, lyric, music
Lyric Indonesia Maharddika
Om awignam mastu
Ding Aryan ring sasi karo
Rohini kanta padem
Nishite redite pratama
Kilat sapte tusteng padem
Nante wira megawi plambang
Aku dengar deru jiwa
Badai badai mahaghora
Di Nusantara Raya
Cerah gilang gemilang
Harapan masa datang
Rukun damai mulia
Indonesia tercinta
Selamat sejahtera
Gunung langit samudera
Ruh semesta memuja
Rukun damai mulia
Indonesia tercinta
thanks for the info!
It's Roni Harahap on piano, not Nasution
Indonesia Mahardhika terbening yg pernah saya dengar.
There's a real soul inside this music, the audio quality doesn't do it justice somehow
Great reaction
Fyi This is the second of 150 the best indonesian music album of all time by rolling stone magazine, n the first was some soundtrack album called "badai pasti berlalu" from 1979, u have to check that out
Ok
this is the stuff
yes!
Actually its intro was "inspired" by KC & The Sunshine Band's song
Utopia Singring and The Glass Guitar in the future 🖤🖤🖤🖤
sounds like a plan for an upcoming Sunday!
@@deanwolfechannel I'll be back next month. Just sorting out the last of my financial issues from this move back home.
No worries bro
Dean very yes,epl and some classic British progressives bands of the 70s. I just ask for original vinyl from Indonesia.
nice!
There is actually no original vinyl for this album. As is the case with many Indonesian releases, it was released exclusively on cassette tape. The only vinyl release for this album is a German unofficial press that became so rare due to pressing being halted following copyright issues.
Niacin does an excellent cover of Red by King Crimson you might be interested in. Anything by Niacin is worth a listen, actually.
Unfortunately, the band only played live three times. In 1979, 2004 and 2011. Sadly there’s no decent documentation for the first one. And about why this album only originally released on cassette tape, it was the only music medium that can be accessed in the 70’s-80’s in Indonesia because the price for an LP wasn’t suitable for the citizens back then (LPs here were only produced for radio broadcasts. Although overseas artists still sold on LP).
Thanks for the info. Cassettes will wear out faster than LPs too.
🙌
maybe you should react to Indonesian old band called Tielman Brothers, sing Rolling Rock.. They are the First Rock and Roll band in the world actualy..
Yeah, sadly musical recording in Indonesia didn't improve until the early 1980s, not to mention the (only?) available music format available in Indonesia was compact cassette.

I prefer Barong Gundah over this song. There's a lot of cool stuff in that song. You should check out, Bro.

Ehm... maybe i'm to young for this old stuff hhe... and probably my grandfather was very young at 70's i think... dean hhe... but "Rock prog" started at moment... the craziest i think in 60's we have also the another classic genre dominant... like jazzy, country & blues and its like the rest in 80's more like disco, 90's like was Rock and 2000 was booming the alternatif band... for 21 centuries also we have dominant in boyband for while, Solo artist and of course Edm music until now
But i don't know its just for my side view... although there was just dominant in each era's but... Indonesia have a lot differenciation/complete in genre of the music particuraly dean hhe...
