I have listened to Big Ben sing In Fernem Land so many times over the years. The clarity of his diction, the incomparable tone and pitch of his voice. The degree to which he is in character, and the use of his eyes to express his joy. Yes, yes, his name is Lohengrin, son of Percival. Simply transporting. Thank you, Herr Hepner (I know he is Canadian :)
Floating up into that universe listening to his extraordinary interpretation, every note more glorious than the first. Extraordinary man, extraordinary career.
BRAVOOOOO!!!!!!!!; please come back to stage, the lyrical world needs heldentenors like you, ellegant, heartfelt, yet still heroic and powerful. BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John Schofield He had a great voice for the lighter Wagner-this role, Walter But something really went wrong, and he was not that old. I never heard a world class tenor with so many cracks in the later part of his career-he would be singing wonderfully, and then boom-I think it became too much for him I think Levine's pushing him into Tristan ruined his voice
+Labienus dear friend I am not so close to his performances,in the fact that saw him 3 times in live and the rest just in videos and Cd's (heard that, about him cracking quite frecuently). But I agree with you;when pushing a lyric tenor into heavy roles,he starts loosing the high placement in the high paladar and mask...he starts ussing too much glothis attacks!!!!. For sure, while respecting the enourmos diferences between maestro Heppner and myself,it happened to me. I studied with Alfredo Kraus (1996-97)and keep all the notes and indications;I retook this training and recovered my voice at my 50 years old (check my channel please). I am in the process still, but started to change the attacks from very high placement....this is working out.I guess that if I could,Ben Heppner by been far more talented, can also do it again. That us why I plead for his comming back.Best tegards,John Schofield (tenor)
John Schofield Probably better to keep a successful world class career in some of the most demanding repertoire separate from personal aspirations There was a period where as a Jugendlicher (though there is often a difference about what roles are classified there) he was magnificent. I heard him in some of those roles, but later heard him a lot more where he cracked badly. I think it eroded his confidence, made him unacceptable to me, and I wondered how he was able to keep singing in public. I'm sure this wore him down. He would often explain it based on allergies and medication, and others did on a large weight loss (maybe why Botha remains huge) They may have been factors, but as I said Tristan at the end of a career (for his voice) would have been one thing, but in his core years, a role so placed in the middle of his voice, and such a trial of endurance - and yes changed the placement of his voice. Sorry, I think the last chance was his attempt at Siegfried-and then cancellations was the end. A lot of singers sort of fade out of a career, but Heppner's public and formal reitirement is the end. Also the years to have corrected the problems and made a "come back" have passed.
Labienus Dear friend, sadly must say you migth be rigth...anyhow, the legacy of his good days and talent, remains in our hearts and ears. Thanks for answering so nicely my response. Receive my best regards and thanks again.Saludos. John Schofield
karifrid I forgot to say that I made a video of this aria 2011 as karifrid. I am like a "little brother"of Heppner. A smaller version (still big) I am 130 kilos and can lift 150 kilos on the bench. I hope to find a job, (even if I am not slim...)
Spectacular! This is on my playlist and after listening many times this version is absolutely most thrilling! Top favourite is his singing of the lead tenor in Fidelio. Ben Heppner, my favourite tenor, one of my top 3 favourite opera singers. With huge gratitude. 🧡🙇♀️
Wonderful singer ,great voice, great interpretation and delivery. One of the great tenors and best of all he always sounds like a true tenor not a reformed baritone.
Magnifique.
I heard Ben Heppner when he was a first-year student at the University of British Columbia. The voice was huge but not placed, that took some time. His achievements since then are amazing. And he is admired as a person, whose warmth and humility come through in his commentaries on the Saturday afternoon Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts. I agree with those who hear him as a dramatic tenor not a heldentenor, and wish he'd left Tristan and Siegfried to others -- nevertheless, he is a great man.
you want to hear Ben Heppner in one of the BEST "modern" Lohengrin's, check out the 1998 Met Opera production with James Levine conducting him in the title role along with Deborah Voigt as Elsa, Deborah Polaski as Ortrud, Hans-Joachim Ketelsen as Telramund, Eric Halfvarson as Konig Heinrich and Eike Wilm Schulte as an absolute POWERHOUSE Heerrufer. only complaint about the recording is that they got kind of "arty-smarty" with the "stage position" left-right sound and many arias are one sided.
Great performance, wish it had been videotaped. Vastly better than the previously aired 1986 one (except of course for the tremendous Rysanek on the latter). Especially Heppner as compared to Peter Hoffman.
UN FRAGMENTO DE WAGNER que probablemente haga referencia a algo mágico que por otro lado los argumentos de las óperas de Wagner SON INSÓLITAS POR LO INCREIBLE DE ELLAS, PERO QUE UTILIZA PORQUE DAN MUCHO MARGEN PARA SU MÚSICA.
Heppner appeared this evening (October 20, 2017) in Toronto to introduce and discuss a program with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra of Mahler and and Howard Shore (a new and beautiful song cycle, world premiere, for mezzo and orchestra, with composer in the audience). Alas, no singing from the giant, Ben Heppner. His speaking voice in english and excellent french is nice, but...
Great (Jugendlicher Helden) spinto tenor. I dont think of him as a dramatic/heldentenor based on his bright tone quality, and the lack of the baritonal warmth in the mid to low register. However he has a very hefty voice and a piercing ring.
Actually, he is past his best here, although he avoids cracking. The vibrato has loosened, and the tone is pinched and nasal compared to what I remember seeing him onstage in the 90’s.
Yes, that is more like it! But, at the end, everyone draws the note values out, it is better when they are done in tempo because it leads into the incredible music that follows, in the opera, not in this arrangement.
Many, if not almost everyone on the commentary loved his nasal hooked singing in this clip. Heppner's singing of Lohengrin eariler was not this way at all.
IF I am perfectly honest, I find this wholey unappealing, and lacking any good vocalism. What am I missing? Its lyrical. Ok, granted. But so what? It is ungathered, unfocussed, has a wobble due to bad coordination. I don't get why he ever became a thing.
I think I agree. Nice man, but he is neither Italiante, or a true Heldentenor. Rather thin over all tone. Bright certainly, but not quite a heroic ring. And his phrasing is a bit "square ", more noticable in Italian, where some portamenti would be welcome. Still, an intelligent and sincere artist.
Jetzt erst ,2024 ,gesehen...bravo,bravo..
Toller Interpret und Herr Thielemann sehr souverän, was sonst❤

GLORIOUS SINGING!!!! One of the best renditions ever to be heard! Heppner leads us on
the pathway to the SOUL!! Bravo!

Ben Heppner und Christian Thielemann zwei Legenden unserer Zeit.

Gott welch dunkel hier
WAGNER eut été enchanté quelle qualité d'enregisterment !!!
We are fortunate in Michigan to be able to listen to his program on Canadian radio. This is my music.
I remember seeing him in the Safeway in Dawson Creek about 10 years ago.
Back for a visit and a hometown concert.
Beautiful voice, great interpretation. Heppner is still one of the leading Wagner-tenors in the world.
fabulous version. Miss him on the stage.
Best in fernem land on RUclips! Shame about the glitch in the recording
Bravo marvelous heldentenor is Mr. Ben Heppner, a real joy to hear in this rpertorie (in the matter of fact in all what he sings!!!). BRAVOOO!!!
Això es un Heldentenor ! ( maravellosa dicció i frasseig ).
A great dramatic tenor(Heldentenor) now retired. One of our many gifts from Canada.
Bravo! Yasss!!! Absolutely divine! 💛💛💛
I heard him sing this song at Lanaudiere on a steamy night outdoors--very atmospheric.
Perfect Wagner tenor!!!!!!!!!!
Ja , das ist DIE INTERPRETATION!
Eine herrliche Reise zum Walhalla.
Bellísima interpretación. Gracias.
Strong man, I like him.....

Wunder Ben Heppner!!!
Excellent! J'ai toujours apprécié Ben Hepner!

Mr. Heppner's Lohengrin is a lesson in Heldentenor singing!

BRAVOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Magnificent
I never understood Wagner until i heard Ben Heppner; or its luminosity.
Fantástico tenor
Favorite Canadian tenor
Welch' holde Stimme!
Bravissimo!!! Migliore!!!
Terrific!
perfect Helden tenor
wow!!!
What a perfect WAGNERIAN TENOR
This is glorious!
Mario del Monaco made a superb recording of this and with reasonably good German -he never actually sang Wagner on stage though .
I love Ben Happier He was always "The Real Deal" no matter what he sang. Equally goo inNoel Coward! What a guy!
Wait. He put his 'goo' in Noel Coward? I never knew they dated.
I just love his facial expression as he sings each line. His diction, his enunciation flawless. I am totally entranced by his performance. Magical.
This gives me chills. Amazing!
Toll !
Correction.... THEE leading wagner tenor in the world.
Such round, clear tones. Is he what is called a helden or heroic tenor? If so he certainly deserves that description. He is wonderful!
Add his diction and expressive delivery. I am completely captured by his storytelling, sung recitative. Mystery and wonderment....
Der Heldentenor des 21. Jahrhunderts!!
Buona prova...grazie

Close to perfect - maybe already beyond it!
Interpretazione di prim'ordine!
Video broken in the best part. Bummer

Wonderful singing, on a par with Melchoir. A true heldentenor.
Great (Jugendlicher Helden) spinto tenor. I dont think of him as a dramatic/heldentenor based on his bright tone quality, and the lack of the baritonal warmth in the mid to low register. However he has a very hefty voice and a piercing ring.

Too bad Ben isn’t singing anymore!
Unvergleichlicher Thielemann!!

Frechheit so was
Well yes. He is not inferior to the earlier tenors - but true: He has no Flagstad to piss off, so his job is easier.

the way he pronounces "bösen", you can hear he is no German:-)
He's a 'German'-Canadian : ))
He has a warm. powerful voice and expressive voice but there is a bit of a wobble hear.
Many, if not almost everyone on the commentary loved his nasal hooked singing in this clip. Heppner's singing of Lohengrin eariler was not this way at all.
Not a Heldentenor. Far from it.
IF I am perfectly honest, I find this wholey unappealing, and lacking any good vocalism. What am I missing? Its lyrical. Ok, granted. But so what? It is ungathered, unfocussed, has a wobble due to bad coordination. I don't get why he ever became a thing.
