Since mid-2017, China has been operating a military base in Djibouti. For many countries, the Republic of Djibouti has become the central anchor point in the region. It hosts military bases from France, the United States, Japan, Italy and, since 2017, China. No other country in the world has so many foreign bases. The fact that so many countries want to be present here has to do with the location, which is important for a lot of reasons. And it is one rare spot where the US and China, two nations tangled in a growing rivalry, are just 10 kilometres apart from each other.

Why does the channel have a new name?
As you may have noticed, the channel has changed its name from "Society of Geeks" to "neo".
And to make this clear: It's not about a change of ownership, it's just taste.
When I launched the channel almost 3 years ago, I would have never thought the videos would get the attention they now have. The initial scope of the types of topics were very limited but now has expanded. The channel was thought to deal primarily with analysing films but now they have become more political. And the name should have the flexibility to fit for both aspects, as well as for any genres in the future that I can’t even think of right now.
And with this new name, it feels right to approach the next goals and really develope the channel into something exciting.
Thanks for your understanding. - Развлечения

I find it hilarious to note that the US blocked Djibouti from inviting Russia to set up a base in their country in 2014... only for Djibouti to turn around and give China a base three years later instead. US sources called the move a "blindside" by Djibouti. I personally call it top tier trolling🤣

China 1 base
The United States - over 800 bases
Japan 1 base.
Rest of the world:
China 1 base.
World: Wait, thats illegal
Exactly! Double moral standards big time.
Luke Martin 800 bases it will not be able to afford in 5-10 years. And in that time China will be all over the world not as a military base but as a commerce port base. Remember the Soviet Union 1989? It could no longer afford its military footprint. In the next few years the petro dollar will be dumped and abandoned, crashing the dollar currency value, as the 21st century globalized, multi national corporations establish a cyber currency independent of any one nations currency supremacy. Welcome to the end of the American 20th century and to the beginning of a global century. Led by China

Djibouti is smart. If relations sour with one of the nations that has a base in there nation then they can just ask the other nations with bases to protect them. They can also play the nations with bases against each other for economic gains.
Actually it's not smart. Eventually Djibouti must create a effective military. So should the rest of Africa.

What Rex Tillerson Said: "China's approach which encourages dependency using opaque contrancts, predatory practices, and corrupt deals that mire nations in debt, and undercut their sovereignty."
What Rex Tillerson Really Meant: Only the United States is allowed to issue such predatory loans to developing countries through our financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund or the World Bank.
Also China are known to be a bit more forgiving than the US- when Equatorial Guinea (it might have been Guinea-Bissau I'm not sure) told the Chinese they couldn't pay their debt China cancelled it completely
shh, quite please, you gonna trigger all butt hurt Americans
Right, it was like he was just describing American policy lol
I mean I fucking hate America too but I don't think we should ignore what China is doing, neoliberalism is bad under literally any flag. Doesn't help that China is a lot more predatory with its measure either e.g. when they built a port in sri-lanka and charged them way too much and then when Sri Lanka couldn't pay them back they just were like 'ok it's ours now' and they filled it with Chinese workers. Like they literally took one of the best chances for Sri Lanka to eventually fully develop itself away from them.
Oh also, whilst US neoliberalism is usually run by businesses separate from and typically trying to circumvent the rules of the government, all big companies in china (the ones which are able to globally expand) are directly managed by the Chinese government so its expansionism represents far greater power than anything else. Cause like two Chinese companies working abroad will help each other because they're literally run by the same thing, American companies would try to outcompete the other.
thanks a lot for music info in the end

Djibouti has one great economic resource and that is, its geographic location. Obviously they would need ports, roads, rail, energy, commercial centers etc in order to realize this economic potential which is to be a major distribution hub into the interior of Africa. Question is; which country or organisation has the capability to finance and build these infrastructure? The US???!!
Yes, the US has the capability to finance and build it, but they're too afraid of brown people and are engaging in meaningless culture wars which take up a lot of resources and brain power.
China's export of freight ports, free trade industrial parks, railways, and other infrastructure construction in Djibouti has contributed to Djibouti's economic prosperity and its reputation as a port and central city in Africa. The United States and other countries exported military and political consciousness revolutions. China is doing well.
It’s China, they can do it the best. Even more than the US.

The Chinese have massive shipping interests to protect, so they have every reason to be in Djibouti. They are also making a significant investment in the economic infrastructure of the country, the region and the entire African continent.
The U.S. placed its military there following the September 11th false flag, has brought its Special Ops P2OG program and drones. Since the U.S. arrived the level of terrorism has skyrocketed on the African continent. Whatever rent the U.S. is paying, it's not enough.

They're making a lot on rent (hope the people are benefiting and not just the leaders) and are "safe" until for now. If the U.S. and China get into it, it will be one of the first places to get flattened. I view the Chinese presence as much more benign than the U.S., they're building infrastructure and lifting the economy of the locals.
Xx Stolz Xx But if those countries have military bases in Djibouti go to war. Djibouti will be torn apart in a blink of an eye.
John Wright
Unfortunately people don’t benefit from it at all most of the population lives in extreme poverty and lack access to basic things like electricity clean water etc Djibouti is run by a dictator and he doesn’t give anything back to the people
This could be a big opportunity for Djibouti in making revenue through foreign investments which is caused by the heavy foreign investments from militaries around the world. But this is also risky for Djibouti as it makes heir economy be heavily reliant on other countries & if a war breaks out with the countries that have bases in Djibouti, that might cause heavy tensions with the region. Not only that, having heavy foreign control over important & strategic parts of the country can make Djibouti have struggles in independent sovereignty from foreign forces.
