A little more narrow bandwidth on SSB would probably help to reduce noise. On my FTDX101D I have a DNR that really enhances faint or noisy SSB. Those contacts would be very solid CW QSOs. ruclips.net/video/cUNm8cpS4wc/видео.html
Here's a trick for those of us who run vintage gear: use the IF shift and notch filter controls to manipulate the effective receiver bandwidth. Sometimes using the RIT/clarifier along with the other controls will get the QSO in the log. Good DX.
