I met him after the show randomly. Been listening to them for years, but this was the first time seeing them live and I loved it. He is such a friendly guy! Got myself a birthday pressie and will be at the gig on the 9th September at the Roundhouse. Cannot wait.
Thanks for all your comments. Please like and share, and let me know which bands you’d like me to interview. We focus on London gigs so when they’re in town I can have a chat with them. Thanks again, Carrie x
I had a backstage pass at this years rebellion and luckily got to speak and get a pic with with a few of the band as they were about to go on stage. But I left Colin alone as he was seconds from going on but looking back I wished I had said something 🤣. Brilliant performance that night 👌
So nice to see a proper interview which is an actual conversation rather than five minutes for a plug for gig and a couple of obvious questions. My favourite punk band at the moment are Rumkicks, who also played at Rebellion. OK, you couldn't get much further from London as these three women are from Korea, although I guess they did also play The Half Moon in Putney. They are fans of Cock Sparrer though, and did a cover of England Belongs to Me in their Rebellion set, although the best version of it is the second song in this clip from their gig in Birmingham ruclips.net/video/-YvbeVTSc4Y/видео.html It's a little different with a Korean female accent, but the energy is still there in spades.
Thank you, I’m so glad you enjoyed it. There was a lot of talk about the Rumkicks this year. I didn’t get to see them myself but next year I’m planning to see more bands that I’ve not seen. Thanks for the recommendation and for sharing the video. Let me know if there are any bands you’d like to see interviewed and I’ll do my best to make it happen. 🙂
@@Punk_Oi_Interviews Rumkicks will be back in 2023, apparently on a bigger stage. They probably have more fans outside Korea than in it now, because the punk scene appears to be very small there. The lead singer, Yeawon, is also in another punk band, called Rux, and they (before she joined) caused a national incident when they appeared on a Saturday afternoon music show, and two (male) friends of theirs joined them on stage and danced about naked, in front of the millions watching live, and an studio audience of families. Punk was banned from TV for years after that - even the music show itself was forced off air, and it really harmed the genre's popularity in what's still a conservative country. If there's someone I'd like to see an interview with, it's Olga from The Toy Dolls, but they are from Sunderland - not as far as Korea, but can seem like it if you ever drive that far. I think Jake Burns would be interesting too, but again, Belfast is hardly on the outskirts of London. Rat Scabies would be good, not only for his take on things from the outset of the punk scene here, but also because I've seen that he's done work with bands in other countries, such as Japan, so he's not going to be the kind of guy who thinks the world revolves entirely around the late 70s. Overall though, I'd just say go for the people you want to interview, as you will know more about them, and probably have a better conversation/interview as a result.
@@Punk_Oi_Interviews I think I saw you at Rumkicks' set on Sunday. I would have nervously said hello, but I was on the rail, and didn't want to lose my place. I was actually stood behind Rumkicks' Yeawon as she watched Cock Sparrer on Saturday night, and honestly, you've never seen anyone look so happy to be at a gig, leaning over the balcony, singing away. She looked like a kid on Christmas morning. And Cock Sparrer were great too. I don't even know their songs that well, but every one had you bouncing along.
@@RevStickleback yes I was there, feeling a bit worse for wear haha! Cock Sparrer killed it! One of the best sets I’ve seen of theirs. And I’ve seen and played at quite a few!
I was there when you changed it to running riot and loved it , you should do it more often to keep people on their toes , the intro music should never change it's awesome , de de de de de lol
remember first seeing sparrer in 1977 supporting the heavy metal kids in folkestone .!! They were fucking excellent , "i cant stand the peace and quiet "!
Colin looks like 25. ...maybe 26. Streetkids, never get old. I remember, the record release concert of "Here we stand", in Wolverhampton, was one of the greatest things in my life. Thanks Carrie, for that great talk! Oi! Oi! from the backstreets!!
Forever is right up there with Shock Troops for me, a stunning album! So cool of the band to have traditions like starting with Riot Squad, it feels right that they do it
Oi wasn't an existing name for the subgenre in the mid 70s; The 1st Oi! band would either be the Gonads or Cockney Rejects... but the 1st band to really get it off the ground was Skrewdriver. Sparrer's 1st album came a year later but was available in limited supply/ Shock troops was the album that launched them & to this day sums them up as a whole.•
@@kookadams85 Yes I know where the term started, it was invented by Garry Bushell. Only been listening to this kind of music since I was 12 (48 now), I can tell you right now you’re not telling me anything I don’t already know..none of the bands classed themselves Oi! to start, they were all street punk rock and roll (even the Cockney Rejects with their anthemic Oi! @KLM669 hardly a waste of my life bud. It took me about 10 seconds to type. I prefer Discharge personally, but each to their own init. I've seen them play live loads of times at rebellion. They're just not my thing. If that's ok with you like
Best Oi band ever played again in Blackpool and what a performance well worth waiting for best band of the weekend can’t wait until next year

They’re all really lovely. So polite and they have time for everyone. I’m sure you will have another chance to meet him.
Enjoyed that. Nice one, Carrie. 👍

Saw them at Punk Rock Bowling in NJ 7 years ago. Such a sick show! Glad he gave props to Squeeze and Altered Images-love both those bands!
