This song is written by Lay in Chinese and was translated into Korean by Chen and Chanyeol (Chanyeol wrote his Rap) Promise It is a song for fans and former members. It's called that because at the beginning EXO had promised to always be together, the 12 of us, and that didn't happen, so they decided to make us a new promise, which is what the song expresses.
Suho blamed himself a lot for the members' departure and many people blamed him for not being able to keep his group together, when they performed that song the members cried.
This song is also called EXO-2014 since that year was one of the most difficult for Exo and Exol.

This song strike me more that the fact that lay wrote the song and chen write the lyric , chanyeol write the rap. Moreover , the chinese version is written by lay. The lyric is different. For the korean version is like a letter to the fan , meanwhile the chinese version is like a letter to the member who left. Both version is great but i love the chinese version more, lay lyrics makes me cry like hell.
EXO are thankful to us but I'm equally thankful to them. The bullshit they've had to deal with with members leaving, their company treating them crappy, shady stuff from within the industry doing them dirty, fans of other groups spreading lies about them and even their own fans turning on them for the dumbest reasons, and yet they've still managed to stay together for twelve years and continue to make great music for us despite how hard it must be at times. I'm so proud of them. So glad my close friend introduced them to me twelve years ago. One of the best decisions I've ever made was becoming an EXO fan lol They don't know it, but they've helped me through some tough times in grief and life's messy patches. They will always be special to me 🥰

Yeah, it was a turning point for exo and they really grew stronger together and had a stronger bond. EXO tends to not be close to many people friends wise even with idols so yeah even when they are out in public theyll stick together still.

You should now check out the "Promise response song" where some EXO-L fans took the melody of "Promise" and wrote their own lyrics that reflects the response to EXO's message in "Promise." EXO-Ls wanted to let EXO know that we still love them and to stop blaming themselves, etc. because we will always be by your side no matter what. We understand that the members were having just as hard of time with everything that happened as we were and we still support and love them through it all, etc.
As others have mentioned, "Promise" was wrote and composed by Lay, with the Korean lyrics wrote by Chen (an EXO-M member) and rap by Chanyeol. It was created in 2014 after 2 of the Chinese members (Kris and Luhan) left and was released in 2015 after the third Chinese member (Tao) left. The song was meant to explain everything that happened to them in 2014 with the members leaving the company and "breaking their promise" to EXO-L to always be one. (EXO's slogan is "We Are One" -- one as a group and one with their fans. So, when the Chinese members left, the rest of the members felt like as a group they broke that promise.) It's an apology to EXO-L. EXO is saying they are sorry for causing fans pain and for making EXO-L sad.
Everyone had a really hard time during this time period because everyone felt really blindsided by everything that happened and by the members that left because their departure was so sudden and without warning. Lay, in particular, as the only Chinese member remaining, had a really hard time because he not only was the only foreign member now, but he had an immense burden with the fact that he had to straddle the line between his loyalty to his country and his loyalty to EXO and SM Entertainment. Lay has always been very grateful for all the opportunities that SM has given him in terms of his life and career, so he always wants to be loyal to EXO and the company, but he is constantly having to defend his loyalty and reassure fans that he has no intention of betraying them the same way they felt the rest of the Chinese members did. As the song says, EXO promises that they will always protect EXO-L and make them smile.
And now that the rift between Korea and China has happened, Lay has had an even harder road to navigate because he is no longer allowed to participate in activities with EXO because they are a Korean group. However, he still works really hard to make sure that EXO-L's know that his separation is not by choice. The only reason he is keeping his distance from the rest of the EXO members is because of the rules of the Chinese government, and yet, many people still see Lay's absence as a betrayal of his loyalty as an EXO member. So he is constantly struggling to prove people wrong, while also following the rules of the Chinese government, which for years discouraged him from even mentioning his relationship with anything to do with Korea.
To navigate these roadblocks SM has found ways around them, for instance with Lay's solo promotions. Because Lay was not allowed to promote in Korea, SM found a way to promote Lay as part of EXO's storyline by partnering with him to release English songs and albums and to tie his MVs in with EXO's story. Everything EXO does, including several of Lay's solo releases tie into the fact that he is a member of EXO -- its SM's way of making sure that even though he might not be able to work with the members, that they still make sure to show fans that his storyline and presence as part of EXO is still really important to both Lay and SM.
But no matter what, Lay always makes sure to find a way to show fans that he is, and will always be, a member of EXO -- he is always supporting his EXO brothers, even from afar. Even in recent interviews when people ask him about EXO he still talks about how he chats with the members online and how he will always be a member of EXO, so if the members ever need him all they have to do is ask, etc.
Thanks for sharing those moments as a supporter for EXO - EXO L. THE HURT THE PAIN of that time has slowly lessened but we go on to know how EXO as a whole will forever be iconic - legendary and much loved! To see them live is overwhelmingly satisfying as a big EXO fan.. thank you EXO!

Lay composed the song and wrote the Chinese lyrics. SM initially didn't want EXO to record this song but with the help of one of their managers, they got it approved.
Imagine the amount of pressure and heartbreak Lay must be feeling when watching his brothers leave one by one and knowing the fact that many outsiders are already ready to raise fingers at him to be the next one to leave. The feeling of wanting to claim his innocence and reassuring everyone that things are gonna be fine. The way he held that all in as a responsibility and wrote this song with all his passion. Baekhyun on the other hand being called a traitor for simply falling in love, Suho feeling like a failure as a leader and other members being shaken up by all events unfolding one by one. 2014 was a tough year but like Lay promised, next year would be theirs which is exactly what happened. Exodus was an outstanding album, breaking every recording.

In every uncertainty, this song will always remind me about how strong EXOs bond is and that it is stronger than ever due to all of the hardships they have been through together as a group. Knowing that today is their 12th anniversary makes me so proud of how far they have come and how successful they are after all the struggles in the past.
Xiumin was 25, Suho and Lay were 24, BaekChenYeol were around 23/22, D.O was 22 and Sehun & Kai were 21 in this concert. And the group was only 3 years old when they held this concert but 2 years old when the three members left. It was quite early for them to lose the members while exo was still in the process of establishing themselves in the industry. They might be from SM but when they debut, they were named as SM's Failure group after their debut wasn't really accepted by everyone at that time because of their concept as aliens with powers, storyline, how they debut as a sub unit first with EXO-M and EXO-K and promoted separately with EXO-M in China and EXO-K in South Korea until 2013 with their comeback Wolf and Growl.
Their debut might sound fascinating at this time because storylines and concepts are now a thing in kpop, but back then, it was one of the struggles of the group because people find it weird and because of the number of members and multiple versions of every songs (Mandarin and Korean), some are hesitant to dive in to the group back then. And the pressure that they had to endure because of how big their senior groups are and being the youngest group at that time.
Despite of all the teasing that they always loved doing to Suho, all the members do love and care for him as he was the one who really kept the group from not falling apart emotionally and mentally despite of all the backlash they received since debut. That's why everyone felt emotional when Suho entered the military. He is indeed EXO's Suho which means 'Guardian' in korean.

I'm crying as always 😭 there's not been a time I watched Promise stage without tears.. Kai was just crying under his cap all the time he wasn't singing... Lay felt so much pressure being the last Chinese member.... I just love them sm. It's nobody's fault in the group their shitty company treated them inhumanely. But each one was so talented, so devoted and so professional to go through those times stronger than before, and SMEnt totally knew that EXO members are creme de la creme and fans will stick to these outstanding personalities and believed EXO could come out on the other end even more successful. And it worked. These boys are by far the most talented, handsome, hardworking and exceptionally kindhearted I've ever seen. Promise just highlighted that exol stan the right group

Although he hadnt left yet, Tao is actually not invited to this concert, he doesnt even have any clothes provided until Sehun lent him his jersey. His mic was turned off by the staff but he was still mouthing to the lyrics and even holding up the exo l hand gesture (which made Suho cry). After this, he left EXO

It was painful and very beautiful, just hearing those notes in the beginning never failed to make me cry since day 1, but I've never looked back as a now grown up, to just think about how young they were and how much emotional maturity they expressed with this song. They have many songs dedicated to us, exols, but this one will always have a special place in our hearts. even new fans take this song very special

I became an EXO fan in 2013. I know many of us were angry and upset that they felt they needed to apologize for something that was not remotely their fault. And that they felt genuinely responsible for the fandom’s pain. They sang about saying ‘we are one’ but failing to keep that commitment to the fans. No real fan saw it that way, but there was a definite feeling of there being a before and an after. It felt like a loss of innocence. And this is just from a fan’s perspective. I know it was very hard on EXO but I’m sure it was 10 or 100 times harder than we could ever know.
Watching this and it's EXO 12 year anniversary really makes me cry and smile at the same time ❤
Promise is such a special song. For one it's written by the members themselves, also, if you see how they sang this song, they have poured their hearts and soul. And the fact that until now, they kept their promise, no one will leave exo even if they have their own careers. They will always choose exo for exo-l. It was not just one heartache in one go. EXO and EXOLS have to go through the pain 3x since the members left on 3 different occasions. Just imagine the shock after shock after shock they have gone through. I still hate Kris for leaving on such a bad timing. It's as if he did his departure intentionally to hurt the other members since he did it without them knowing at all. He did not consider their feelings. Good thing he left early though knowing he is a criminal now. Karma got the best of him. 💀
That's why I hate it when people started associating him with Exo after his crimes were revealed. Like why would you do that when all this time he's only been a solo artist? He was barely up there with Exo at all, hardly 2 years. Left off all the contacts with the group entirely when only the company was at fault. Even Luhan who left because he felt like the company treated Korean members better than Chinese members never cut off ALL contacts with the members right away.

And the chinese fans said he was not respecting his country for not leaving along with the other chinese members. It's really hard when young, inexperienced EXOL demand nonsense like one of the boys leaving the group... they don't know what we all went through. How much the boys suffered, how much EXOL suffered. We ALL made a promise with this track. This is why, no matter what, Lay will always be EXO, listed as EXO, even if they never promote together again, it doesn't matter. EXO9 and EXOL - We are one.
And, many many of us still miss EXO Tao and Luhan... but with this song, there was a new commitment, and really, a new era...
