Hungry Vlogger Discovers Cebu's Best Street Food 🇵🇭

  • I went on a foodie adventure on the streets of Cebu, Philippines with a mission to try some unique and tasty Filipino food.
I visited Colon Street because I heard there was a night market there, but when I turned up there was nothing. So I just looked around to see what street food the regular vendors were selling, that I could get a good munch from.
I began at with a 'Balut' which is a duck egg with an embryo inside. People have been suggesting that I try this popular Filipino cuisine ever since I landed in the Philippines, and I finally worked up the courage to give it a go.
With a baby duck inside my belly, I went hunting for more Pinoy food, and found a restaurant called Pares Pinoy. 'Pares' is a dish I'd been meaning to eat in Manila, but didn't get the chance to try it there. It's like a braised beef soup or stew and is a popular lunchtime meal in the Philippines.
The menu option of Pares that I chose also included a balut, so that was balut for my first two meals of the evening!
Colon Street isn't specifically a food street, but there's plenty of food available. I crossed the road from the pares restaurant and visited a bakery that I'd seen the last time I was there. The Patty's bakery had many appealing ube cakes on display and I bought a selection of them to take back to my hotel. That was dessert sorted, for after I did some more eating.
I really wanted to try the 'Bulalo' soup that I'd heard was a Filipino specialty, but couldn't find anywhere that sells it. Google was giving me nothing and none of the local people I asked had any idea where I could find it.
It was only when I asked a restaurant inside the Ayala Center mall, that I found out that Cebu have their own version of the soup called 'Pochero,' so I ordered Pochero instead. What was delivered to my table at the Chika-An restaurant was a huge chunk of beef, on the bone, in a massive pot of soup.
Apparently the portion I ordered was supposed to be shared by 3 to 4 persons, but I'm 1 hungry Scotsman so I managed it on my own.
I continued the vlog on a new day, and it was a happy new day, as I was upgraded to a better room at the Holiday Inn Cebu, and the football jersey that I'd ordered from Shopee finally arrived. Yes, I finally got the Azkals Philippines national football shirt that I hunted for unsuccessfully in a previous vlog in Manila.
With my new jersey on, I headed to a night market that was recommended by the staff at my hotel.
The Carbon Night market was a place I was sure that I could find lechon, the famous Filipino food which is a full roasted pig. And there were two stalls there marked as lechon, but they were both empty.
I went and ate 'Sisig' instead. Sisig is chopped pork and chicken liver, covered in a delicious blend of spices. I'd eaten it for my very first meal in the Philippines in my first vlog of this series, and loved it. This version at the night market was much cheaper than the fancy version I had in the mall in Makati, but was equally tasty.
After demolishing the sisig I was thrilled to see that one of the lechon vendors had arrived. He said that the pig was on its way and would be there in 15 minutes. Of course I waited there so I could be the first one to be served.
Mission complete. I'd tried all the Filipino meals that were on my 'To Eat' list, and finished off the vlog and the series by visiting the Miguel López de Legazpi Statue at San Pedro Fort, built in 1565 when the Spanish first arrived in the Philippines.

My mother is from San Fabian, Pangasinan. She moved here to the US when she was in her 20s and has now been here for over fifty years. I can tell she misses it at times, but I know she moved so I could have that much better of a life growing up than she did. She’s by far the best mother I could ever ask for. I have so many amazing relatives over there that I’m very lucky to have and also get to visit. Whenever I travel there it’s always the experience of a lifetime. I know it’s even more special for my mother whenever she gets the opportunity. One thing I’ve learned from going there is that many people are happy no matter what their situation may be. I feel everyone should experience a place like this at least once in their lifetime. You can feel the happiness in the air wherever you go. I could not be anymore grateful to have Filipino in my blood. Thank you Dale for showing this one of a kind paradise and all else you do on here.

It turns out that the same thing has different names in different places.
Fortunately, you went to that restaurant, otherwise you might never find it!
That waiter taked care of you like a mother. He is so nice and kind!
Although those desserts are not top-notch, they are so cheap, which is a small blessing because they don’t look terrible!

A lil tip: if you see calamansi when the food is served, better use it. It adds so much flavor to the food. For pancit or sisig, add it directly to the food then mix. If with Chicken inasal, add it to the soy sauce.

Dale heres a nice idea. Why not ask Dennis if it's okay that you go with him and witness the process of making lechon or you can even participate in roasting it.

Nice one Dale. Seems that you enjoyed all the foods especially the lechon. It's really worth the trip. Well, Tagaytay is a place somewhere in Luzon which is known for Bulalo. It has also a nice weather. A little bit of cold. You must try to visit there if you have time. Take care and God bless Dale. ☺️

@Dale....Bulalo is not a common dish in the Philippines. It is only common in Tagalog-speaking regions like in Metro Manila area and surrounding provinces. Cebu has a similar dish but a lot tastier and savory which is popularly called POCHERO. Pochero is very common in Cebu and there's even a popular pochero chain called Abuhan which has been in operation for decades already since 1960s. There are relatively newer pochero chains like Kusina. Abuhan is the oldest pochero chain and its branches are named by ordinal number based on the chronological order each branch was established. Thus, Abuhan is the first and original branch of the chain and its succeeding branches are named Abuhan Uno (First Abuhan branch), Abuhan Dos (Second Abuhan) and Abuhan Tres. Kusina is another pochero chain whose owner was a long-time chef of Abuhan restaurant who established his own pochero chain. Pochero is also served in some other casual Filipino restaurants in Cebu.

LOL bulalo is famous even worldwide. Cebu's pochero is nothing to the real pochero dish of Manila. Your pochero is just nilagang baka

@@richardnuevo Really? Bulalo is famous worldwide? Name any city in the US, Europe and Asia where there is a restaurant whose main offering is bulalo. Pochero de Cebu is not an ordinary beef soup but a beef shank. I'm pretty sure, you don't know pochero de Cebu when you mistaken it for an ordinary beef soup which is not. Even food vloggers exclaim that they would travel to Cebu just for its pochero, lechon and other food. I haven't heard any food vloggers (local or foreign) saying they would travel to Manila (or any other particular region or city or province in the Philippines, for that matter) for their food. But many have said thay they would travel to Cebu just for food and, in fact, most of the world famous food vloggers have flown to Cebu just to eat.

@@lionhearted1969 lol it's a known fact that bulalo is way famous than it's counterpart dish in Cebu. You even named it differently confusing it to pochero. In the US and Canada there are so many restaurants that offer this type of dish even in South Korea. The fact that even dale himself knew about it. With regards to pochero of Manila just look it up in the net imao to see the difference

@@richardnuevoI can confirm that on the Canadian front, there are not alot of places serving this lol.

I know its too late. But the upper level specifically 4th level(I think) of the Ayala Center Cebu Mall has this foodcourt with some variations of the local cuisine. You can find dried fish to TINOLA which is different from the TINOLA of Manila. Some seafoods and other meat delicacy aside from the mainstream fast food chain or any chained restaurants in the PHILIPPINES. I really wished I could of bump onto one your of your travels in the PHILIPPINES as I for one am travelling due to work relations. Either way I'm happy watching your vlogs whether where your coming from. Safe travels and Godspeed Dale!
