He got agitated and said I don't want to live with anybody and I said well. I don't think we're on the same page. He stalked me for 6 months because how dare I move on. A year later I was engaged. If I would have stayed with my ex-boyfriend. I would have never found my husband.

Thomas refused to conclude the series with a "wedding" because she felt it sent the wrong message to young girls that marriage was their ultimate goal. Yet this 5th season of That Girl had a proposal, a visit to St. Louis to meet her future in-laws and family, Don and Ann apartment hunting, and this episode (bachelor party/shower)---so WHY have all these pre-wedding themed episodes and yet not have a wedding.

Marlo Thomas did not want Ann Marie to give the impression to girls that marriage was the be all end all to a happy life. If Ann Marie had been the one hesitant to marry...they'd both move on. In spite of the character's possessiveness and occasional idiocy, he had to be the fall guy.

I'm a very unusual woman. Prior to marrying my husband over 39 years ago, I "stood up" to 5 weddings. I didn't care about showers or caterers, or a special wedding dress---or anyone "standing up". We married at City Hall in 1985 with no ceremony, and I've never regretted it. We never had children, and I never wanted to be a "star". In addition, I've ALWAYS HATED "hen parties"---so here we are 39+ years later. I'm happy as a clam.

I understand Marlo’s reasoning that she didn’t want to end the series with a marriage. But since the show was about Ann moving it to NY to make it as an actress, then the last episode could have had Ann finally get her big break, landing a major part on a TV show or on Broadway.

They should have had a peaceful breakup at the end of Season 5. That Girl could have gone on to more meaningful episodes to reflect what happens when relationships end and new ones begin. It was clear that neither of them were ready to get married. Marlo was capable of better things as we saw in her later movies and dramatic roles. It would have brought back the audience that was lost at the end of Season 4. All in all, the show still manages to stand up among the best shows of the 60’s. It would have been interesting to see the direction she went into the 1970’s. Maybe, one day, we will know.

This irritates me.She spent what, four years with this guy. All this social pressure for a woman to get married. We should just be left alone l o l. He should have been honest with her and said he didn't want to get married. But a lot of men don't want to say that in fear of losing you so they don't care if you wasted 2 or 5 years with them.I wasted three years with someone. And it was like pulling teeth trying to get the truth.I don't and he said, I don't want to get married so I left and he stopped me 46 months because he thought I wouldn't leave and he wanted his cake and eat it too I found my husband ten months later, we were married within a year and a half he contacted me.On facebook like x boyfriend never married living with his mama and no kids. What a loser. To bad they didn’t have the guts to see the plot through. People break up all the time. It would have been interesting if they took that road. I think a reunion was in the works before Ted Bessell died. The plot was they never married and Donald was now divorced. I always felt one of the strengths of the show is that she never made it in showbiz. Too bad the show never tackled the reality of the entertainment business. Some people never make it.
