I really want the super obscure/challenging recruitment scenarios back of older games. Especially if it adds characterisation to the character. One of my favourite recruitments is FE9 Shinon because it deeply involves some obscure background he had with another character and essentially resolves a character arc he has with Ike through gameplay mechanics. Good stuff.
Also I love that most of us have basically given up on the hope of a good story at this point lol

My problem with FE9 Shinon's is that while I like it on paper, I really don't want to drag a dead weight character into a chapter just to get one that has fallen off by this point (unlike 10, where Shinon is DUMMY good)
Mechanically, I wish that interaction was more rewarding

I've got to say, I consider traditional recruitment to actually be a big deal.
Having a steady trickle of characters as the game progresses allows differentiation between units with strong bases vs. growths, as opposed to every unit being built up from the start.
In iron man runs, it allows backup units to fill out the roster when characters die, and you get a stream of characters generally appropriately leveled for the point in game progression.
Most importantly though, you get a unique story element for each character. It's not much, but it really gives each character a starting point to their personal story.
In 3 Houses, every character was either "I'm on your team because you're my teacher." or "I'm going to defect from another house because I like your stat distribution."
Guy was an honorable swordsman that owed a favor to a thief that gave him food in a time of need. Dorcas defected from a group of bandits when it was revealed you were protecting his wife from them. Raven joins because his sister is traveling with you. Etc.

You've reinforced my point. You point to Roger and Oliver as failures from the past 14 games, and they both have drastically more interesting reasons for joining than almost the entire cast of 3 Houses. Or at least until you uncover some back story with the support conversations.
Now, you could have pointed to the ax fighters that join with Oguma. I don't think they even have dialog. That's worse than "I'm in teacher's class" but still better than "I value DEX and MAG."

One of the things that I thing 3 Hopes did well was the "Stratagems", where the player can chose some extra effect in their favor. this idea was something I wanted in FE for a while now and tried making in the FE editor but never could get right. I even think it could be useful if it attached to either side-missions in previous chapters, rewarding playing the whole game, or attaching them to support options. Say for example, you get B support with your thief and a chapter comes up where you need to break into a fortress. The thief, trusting you to have his back, will use his sneaking skills to bring himself and maybe 1-2 units to the inside of the fortress, allowing you to take out some back-line units before they can harm your main body of units.

    1. A thousand times yes for some classic recruits. I miss those tense moments of wondering if i set things up right to talk to the recruitable enemy safely
    2. Again a thousand times yes for more map objectives. Route, seize, defence for so many turns. Kill boss, get to objective in so many turns. Protect an NPC. Or like the example you gave of bringing in a super powerful enemy like the black knight to force you to be a little aggressive.
    3. Absolutely have some branching unit customization. Like a cav becoming a PLD or a great knight. A fighter becoming a warrior or berserker ect ect. Doesn’t need to be wide open like three houses, but some variety would add alot to replayability.

Funnily enough classic recruitment has kind of already come back in Three Hopes, or at least compared to Three Houses it felt more like that. Since Engage seems to take more inspiration from traditional Fire Emblems it should be back unless you recruit allies only through the story, really hope that isn't the case.
Yes please to varied map objectives to make the gameplay and the story more interconnected and fun!
Yeah, reclassing would clash with the emblem mechanic from what we know so fingers crossed for an interesting branched promotions system instead!

I'm already glad that they actually seem to be doing more with the whole map that they showed unlike Three Houses, with characters from different places and some with darker skin tones as well. Map objectives were most interesting in conquest compared to other recent games, which nobody would be unhappy if there's more of that (and proper defense maps like they used to have). Classes are usually part of replayability, so I definitely agree with at least having good branching classes, but imo supports should be played around with more to give rewards like combat arts/spells and skills or even paired attacks that work like triangle attack or gambits. Probably the one thing I want to see again is bonus experience from PoR make a return.

My only hope for any strategy game: a smart AI that uses strategy and formulates new plans as response to the player's action. That means enemies are not easy to bait, they will match units against player's according to strength or advantage, use strategies like ambush/surround/blindside the player, abuse terrain advantage, and etc. This also means the map must be cleverly designed with routes/gimmicks/choke points/elevation so both player and AI can formulate strategies.

    • @lanceareadbhar

For point 2, the map objectives: I loved the "defend for N turns" maps in RD (the first FE game I played), and I was so sad when they didn't really appear in the later games. Like I think there was one in Awakening and I think Fates had like 2 across the three routes?
It added a lot when you had to figure out where to have your defense points be, where the potential chokepoints were, who could hold them, and how to distribute your healers and Heron. Which side do you just stall the same halberdier and archer infinitely with Brom who's using an inventory full of vulneraries to survive, and which do you stick your archers and mages at to farm EXP through taking potshots from behind a literal wall and/or Nephenee who's taking out 6 enemies per turn in EP?
The terrain height mechanic, and the ledge mechanic, were really interesting too, and I think contributed a lot to that experience. I hope they bring that back too, even though a fair number of people I talked to hated that mechanic, I think it was one of the more strategic elements of the maps, alongside the ballistae - I could do without those TBH.

Varied map design/objectives would be great. Maybe have something where you need to take specific strategic points (you could be holding on to some already) and you need to hold those for a certain amount of time (very similar to defense maps but you have to take the defense points and hold them and there are multiple). have something like an escape the map chapter where you’re forced are marching in a column and are ambushed and you have to get as many as possible across the map. have that switched up where you attack an enemy marching column and then depending on specific things your opponent’s force will be weakened in various ways in the next chapter(s).

On the varied map design and objectives, we know modern Fire Emblem can have excellent ones. See Conquest for example. And for reclassing/branching, after Houses and Hopes, it would definitely feel limiting to not return to such a system. For future FE games, I would probably utilize the Hopes system or elements of it.
Edit: Oh, and bringing back reclassing/branching may help make all units viable, even the bad ones, as in Houses, so I would appreciate that a lot.
Edit 2: I'd also add that another unrealistic expectation is probably expecting the cast to be as good as the Houses/Hopes cast, because let's be honest, that cast is basically the S-tier of Fire Emblem casts.

Recruitment was vastly simplified since Awakening, but to be fair that game (not counting paralogues) only has 2 characters that start as enemies. Same thing in Fates - Conquest has 0, Birthright has 1, Revelation has 3. Everyone else joins automatically or starts as a green unit.
Not only there could be varied map objectives, but also alternate objectives. Like "Rout or Escape", giving 2 different outcomes, with the first being vastly more difficult.
Reclassing is well and good, but it's important for those classes to make sense for each character. Like Ricken in Awakening can reclass into a cavalier or archer, but his strength is too low to make either one work. Same with Felicia in Fates and her mercenary class. And have good personal growths. If they come primarily from character's class, then you end up with incredibly lopsided units that do not work well outside of their base class.

  • @nathanmcclung3564

The only issue I have with past recruiting is that often it forced your hand on what units you wanted to use. In order to get this character you had to have this one recruited and often used in that battle to talk to another character on the field. While cool in some ways it forced you to use characters you did not want and if you missed getting one character it could mean missing out on others. I know this was not in every game but I do fear that it would hurt the experience if the choice was taken away and I was forced to use a character I did not like.

My favorite fire emblem mechanically is also my least favorite narratively and aesthetically. But mechanics make the game and that’s why conquest is the most addicted I’ve ever been to a fire emblem game.
I’d like the more artsy aesthetics and tone of three houses with the fixed exp amount, minimal between mission fluff, and grueling map design and difficulty of conquest.
When you can’t just grind characters into whatever you want them to be, the results of your play through feel so organic. I hated the character designs and the plot and writing of conquest, but the game got me attached to my characters because it felt like they really grew in a terrible struggle in a unique way because the mechanics mirrored that.
Add a decent story and less childish characters to conquest and boom you have a recipe for success

I never got 3 houses due to this whole "school simulation" stuff. I was so fed up with it by Persona 5 and didn't enjoy it. I Hope Engage will not have anything similar

Huge disagree on wanting enemy recruitment back. I have bad memories of trying to recruit myrmidons who would crit me, I'd restart, then they'd crit me again... then again...

It's best to let an unarmed strong defensive unit get in range if you need to pull them over to you. Sometimes they'll walk to you after a certain number of turns. Some just want to talk to a woman and won't attack.

One of my hopes is supports more akin to earlier games. I don’t hate S supports but I hate everyone being able to marry everyone. I want peoples support pools to be limited to people who they make sense with. And please no more every A support being romantic. It was like a happy harem in three houses and some supports were just ruined by it.

FE3H sidestory chapter where you had to get theu the gates by a certain turn after unlocking them. with the giant golems that 1 shot you chasing you oh and you cant lose a single unit or you lose, was a fun map. unfortunatly post timeskip CF was rushed uwu. I personally hope we can change MCs hair like in fates because the blue and red hair will annoy me the whole playthru.

The reason you can change Robin and Corrin’s Hair Color and create your character in general, was because Robin and Corrin only have their body show up in cutscenes, not their Heads. Byleth was able to fully show up in cutscenes because they didn’t have to render a thousand different combinations for whatever character you created, they only had their one Male and Female appearance. So sorry to say, but Alear’s Hair Color isn’t gonna change.

    My hopes would be:
1 - The character roster doesn't be bad like 3H, or in other words, we have more young characters, I am one that don't really like and can hardly connect to old characters, plus FE was always good to have a bunch of those and they did drop the ball in 3H, and the timeskipped also didn't helped either.
2 - Class system be free form, I did heard 3H do look free form but still have various restrictions and I don't wanna those, I really hope any character be any class and that they can use any weapon they want, so if I want have a group of just fliers using all kind of weapons I can, plus no genderlocked class, I always dislike those.
3 - Dunno if is confirmed or not, but I really hope the rings aren't just for the main/secondary lords of each game and we can have others rings too, I know that could be hard to do, but would like an Ewan ring and a Cath ring too and so on, especially when again I do tend to dislike the main characters of most RPGs and FE isn't different so I would like to be able to use the ones I like the most.
4 - That Alear is an avatar and the customization be on the same level as Toukiden character creation, but I have a feeling that Alear isn't an avatar and they are just marketing as such just like they did with Byleth at first.

More young characters? Did we play the same game, the students in Three Houses were mostly in the 16 to 17 range, with Lysithea and Petra being 15 at the start, the oldest was Mercedes at 22 (a Year older than Byleth’s possible age). How young do you want them to be?
Also, Byleth IS an Avatar, just not a customizable one. And they aren’t gonna make Shez that customizable, lest you want their Head to be hidden in Cutscenes.

    • @ElhPudding
      @ElhPudding Год назад +1

3 Houses doesn't have young characters, 15 is already on the bit older side, not to mention the existence of the stupid timeskip that made them even older! I would say that Cyril is the only that maybe be young but I did heard that you only get to play after the timeskip so that's sad... And I didn't played the game. And I deffinetly wanna 12 or less, I can accept 13 if the character is cute.
And no, Byleth isn't an avatar exactly because of the lack of customization, choosing a gender and putting a name on a pre-made character doesn't make a character an avatar, especially right now when character customization is easly achievable and a lot of games do, and for me I would prefer they would get rid of the gender choices and have their names not being changed and just hope for each game they balance out between a male and female MC, as someone who loves character customizations/creators seeing Byleth just make me sad and is really one of those things that or you do all the way or you don't do at all, and for cutscenes just have it the type of cutscenes that use the in-game models, is how Monster Hunter do their cutscenes.

@@ElhPudding Half of what you said is already incredibly dumb, Byleth is an Avatar, literally everyone in the Community will say this. The Cutscenes are CG and not rendered in game like Monster Hunter or even Mass Effect. And if 15 is already too Old for you, then maybe don't play Fire Emblem, since I guarantee you that most of the Playable Casts in Fire Emblem, at their Youngest, are probably somewhere in their Mid Teens (15-16). Cyril is playable in Three of Four Routes, and can be recruited before the Timeskip, and if you had played the damn Game, you would KNOW that.

    • @ElhPudding

Sorry but is you who are saying dumb things here lol
Byleth isn't an avatar and who say that they are an avatar is wrong about it, so even if the whole community say it, the whole community is wrong.
And I play whatever I want and we have a lot of characters that are kids in FE, literally any FE game have at least one character that is 13 or less except 3 Houses, and that is one of the reasons why 3 Houses is the worst FE game ever.

    • @nickcalderon2637
      @nickcalderon2637 Год назад

@@ElhPudding No, it’s still you whose saying dumb things here, even the Devs would tell you Byleth is an Avatar. And you’re judging a Game based entirely on the fact that you don’t get Characters that are 13 or Younger, so is the community wrong about that too. You never even played the damn game, so you saying it’s the worst would get you laughed at. You can even go to a random comment section that actually talks about this, and tell them that yourself, let’s see how long.
