Thanks for the insight into the US education system, you seem to have a very good overview and understood most of the essentials when you took the loans. Over here(germany) we don´t have to pay for the studies as such, the government provides for the education cost. We "only" have to pay for the livelihood and can get what you call grants from whom we have to pay back 50 % when we get a job(without interest rates and via installment payment if we can´t pay the full sum). On the surface that looks way more affordable for the individuell student but then americans pay less tax than us and overall the US system(while it may feel overwhelming) seems to work fine producing high level academics working for the worlds most successful companies(and the public and social sector as well hopefully). I wish you the best for your career and I am sure your financial situation will be great in the long run as reflected and smart as you are.
I’m in the process of deciding whether I want to apply to Masters or Doctorate programs, and the debt to income ratio weighs heavily on me. It’s comforting hearing someone that’s been through it talk about their payment plan. So thank you for your transparency!
It’s definitely brutal and absolutely something to consider. There are bridge programs if you want to get to practicing as soon and cheap as possible and potentially pursue the doctorate later if you find you need it!
