Honestly, videos where people say that they "learned" a language in 6 months don't help. You can't learn all of the ins and outs of a language in that amount of time and it made me think I was stupid when I didn't learn something that fast.
I should make a break down of how I studied. It helps that I was watching soooo much tv in Flemish (I think that was the main reason it started to stick). I wasn’t aggressively studying, but I did “prime my brain” for 3 months when no progress was made on the apps. I only did like 15 50 min lessons, did grammar, and talked a lot over the course of 6 months. It wasn’t more than 1 hour a day 1-3 times a week. I know how I learn though, so it goes faster. Happy to share the process next time!
I've been stuck on this unending mission to learn French. I took French in high school, but we know how learning a foreign language in the US can be a big waste of time. I went 20-plus years not trying. Then, I was on and off for years. Still can't speak it. Lol. But I also want to learn other languages when i travel to places where I have Friends. I want to learn French, Brazilian Portuguese, Sawhaill, and Tagalog because I have a lot of Filipino friends.
You need to learn a language that you're truly interested in. You never tried because learning French wasn't fun for you. Once you find a fun way to learn it, you'll be more invested.
My family immigrated from Mexico 2-3 generations ago. I grew up in an area where I never knew anyone who was fluent in Spanish except my mom so she didn’t want to teach me something that would make me feel left out whiiich led to me feeling left out with my cousins who would tease me so much for not speaking Spanish or knowing any Latin culture. Now I’ve been learning for 6 months and I’ve found myself stuck in that trap of understanding but not speaking because fear freezes me up! It feels so impossible to be fluent
i completely understand! slightly different situations, i’m first generation, my family also came from mexico. my father was afraid to teach me spanish because he didn’t want to confuse me (ironic, right?). i used to obsess over my heritage and would hate the fact i didn’t speak spanish well enough. all i knew was what my grandparents taught me as they didn’t speak english very well. it wasn’t until i was a teenager when i took it into my own hands and i’m still learning to this day. you’ll get there! just don’t give up on yourself! 🇲🇽
My grandparents immigrated from Portugal when they were kids, so they didn't teach their children (my dad) Portuguese. It literally took just ONE generation to lose something that's tied so intricately to heritage & culture. So yeah it sucks!

My family is Lao. Growing up we spoke Lao and English. Even though we were active in the Lao Buddhist community, my English took over. I rarely spoke full sentences in Lao for fear of sounding stupid. My folks can be really judgmental and know how to make me feel inadequate. I’m relearning my Lao, not for them, but for myself.

While the shame didn't happen to me, it happened to my father who had Polish-speaking parents. He was constantly teased at school for his Polish-American accent to the point he completely spurned his heritage and embraced English and American culture. He doesn't speak any Polish now but I sometimes like to imagine the bi-lingual me who lives in an alternate timeline where I had a chance to grow up learning about my Polish heritage and being taught the language instead of trying to learn as an adult. 🥲 Shame has generational effects, maaaaaan.
I Been convinced and accepted that it's my Mind. 😂 I'm still watching, so idk if mentioned yet😩, however, there's a word I learned in a spanish class that I gracefully was given an A- in back in college🙃😊... I have to be immersed in the environment/culture + language to learn n catch on. Like how we naturally learn in our original. I'm a hands on learner. Thats all🫠. 🤣😭
Two things that has been an issue for me is actually speaking in my case Spanish to native Spanish speakers including friends. Due to the fact that I have had the misfortune on several occasions of being purposely mislead on meaning of words. When either trying to speak Spanish or when asking a friend what does this translate into in Spanish. So you mentally log the supposed translation and you are going around like a cool kid saying the new word that you think means this and in fact it means something else and you find out by another person “idk if I would say that if I were you” or “do you know what that actually means?”with a smile on their face. Then you are given the translation and then face palm your head in embarrassment. It kind of carries over in general bc when you are speaking Spanish and somebody will start to grin or laugh it could be because you really hacked up the pronunciation of a word but my mind automatically thinks crap did someone pull my leg again. So it becomes an anxiety induced thing for me. That I feel I can not trust a fellow human to be honest with stuff. Albeit I don’t think in any way it was meant in a intentional harmful way it is just more a practical joke. As I am sure they were probably mislead on English words when they were learning the language. I found through learning on my own that I can write in Spanish pretty well. As well as I can understand Spanish semi decent as I live in Texas and Spanish is very commonly spoken here. But as far as speaking it to people I’m very apprehensive which is why I struggle with speaking it. Thankfully though there is technology that has evolved since when I first attempted to learn the language in the early 00’s. The second thing is I have found when I do attempt to speaking Spanish to someone it is not always received very well. It seems to trigger some people to speak in Spanish with someone learning. There could be multiple reasons for this.

You told how many months' JO but HOW MANY HOURS a day? It's not like themonths or years as we ALL KNOW some folks study 1-2x's a month for years and some study for 2 hours a day! For years. Big difference. I've heard French men can be teh same way- like direct and serious.
I didn’t go too intense to be honest. No more than 1 hour 1-3x a week! I would get frustrated with myself because I wasn’t making progress, simply because I wasn’t committing time!! Then I’d schedule lessons again and make progress
Thank you so much for sharing! This video came at the right time as I literally just discovered yesterday how much shame I have internalized in regard to my race and ethnicity. I am Mexican and Filipino. Born and raised in America. I don’t speak any of the languages nor do I “fit” or “look” like the stereotypes of either race. Most of my family speaks fluent Spanish but didn’t speak it to their children and didn’t teach us or uphold traditions of our culture. I experienced judgment and criticism from both people in my community and from my own family for being “whitewashed” because somehow they thought it was my fault for not speaking Spanish fluently and knowing more about my own culture throughout my childhood. These experiences have developed a deep insecurity within me and internalized shame of “not being enough” for people already, and a mentality of “why bother trying” to learn more about the language and culture since I’ve already been rejected by the people of my culture. But now that this has been excavated from the depths I am ready to move through it, heal it, and get back to my roots ✊🏼
I feel the shame part so much! Spoke Mandarin Chinese until 5, then lost most of it, and my parents speak to me in English. One of my core memories in my teens is being made fun of at a professional event for my mandarin. Didn’t stop me from learning other languages though, and I really REALLY felt this video 😁
I’m so fascinated in languages I’ve always wanted to learned but never did because I thought I just would not be able to. Now I’m 56 and still so interested but wondering if you think it’s too late for me. My husband is from Bogota and I want to learn to talk to him. Thank you.

Precies daarom spreek ik nog steeds geen Engels, Zweeds, Duits en Spaans. Lezen en verstaan: geen probleem, schrijven lukt ook, en ik kan je de grammatica uitleggen, maar spreken, ik ben bang, doe het liever niet, en als ik het toch doe, is het moeilijk, ben ik de goede woorden vergeten, enzovoort. En dat terwijl die talen in mijn omgeving aanwezig zijn sinds ik klein was. Engels op tv, Zweeds en Spaans door mijn familie, en Duitsland was dichtbij en we gingen er vaak op vakantie. Frans had ik trouwens ook op school, maar dat is hopeloos, kan het een beetje lezen, maar niet schrijven en verstaan.
