I agree; but it sounds like the Shostakovich cello concerto in the first notes. And yes, I know that was after Prok., so the concerto sounds like this, but I got confused too when I heard those notes.
@makuletboy What do you expect? A master class with someone like Yo Yo Ma isn't some reserved spot. You gotta constantly prove that you're the best even in a room of just 3.
@makuletboy I know I've run into that same feeling before when taking advice from someone. As one of the musicians says in the video, music really involves letting yourself become vulnerable to the others in the group and that can be difficult for some. Especially knowing they just met the previous day and didn't really know each other very well. I think it was a good performance, but yes, I can feel that same feeling too. Each person is trying to contribute their own style to the piece.
Poor Yo-Yo Ma, who needs to play with that cello machines :) It's not his cello or just personality, which makes the difference between him and other cellists. It's the FEELING the music like a role or story of something. Three cellists are playing notes without any understand, how to play, without feeling strong pulse and rushing, without understanding and feeling sarcasm in melody, without listening and feeling each other. Actually Yo-Yo Ma looks very upset and I would be that, too.
Your entire critique is inaccurate, and quite a bit unjust. In the first place, Yo-Yo Ma isn't a pompous ass impressed with his own existence. He's being a teacher in this video, and he's not pained in any way about taking on that leadership role. You were no kinder to his students than you were to him. Shame on you.
Yo-Yo Ma's pinnacle was the 90's, and I imagine this video to have been recorded during that era of his career. Unfortunately, his performances have taken a downturn and I would not be surprised to see a successor within the next few years. I have seen him on two occasions, first with Golijov during a U.S. premier and in January 2010 in Boston performing the Haydn in C. The first, of course, was less revealing of his skill, but the Haydn was very rough around the edges. He needs to practice.
If Yo Yo Ma my teacher I would be nervous as hell before each lesson.
Should've guessed it wasn't a beginner's lesson XD
when they play...then when he plays...the difference is so glaring...
I watched this video during music class in my '03/'04 period of high school. I wasn't sure I'd ever hear it, again. Thank you, Verdy Scuderia.
hearing them discuss how to get long with other musicians makes me realize how much insight music can give you into the essence of human relationship
I love how he gives character to the rests.
This is a transcription of March from a Prokofiev Opera "Love of Three Oranges"
