To get a cast of actors of this calibre together and create comedy magic that was genuinely funny not lewd or coarse was simply sublime. We will never see its like again. RIP Jonesy and put that light out!! Bill😂😂💚
His story, serving in north Africa before he went on to fight against (and get captured by) the Germans the battle of Greece, is his real account. They could make a film about him.
In real life Clive Dunn fought in the battle of Greece against the Germans. His army was almost wiped out, and he was one of 400 British army survivors captured and put in a prisoner of war camp in Austria for 4 years. He once told reporters he played Corporal Jones (as an annoying, repetitive old man) as revenge on the Germans. He was not as old as he looked. (in 1968 he was 48) 1988 he was 68.
Lol yes! At least Pike wasn't a stupid boy. What was the name of Bill Pertwee's character - Hodges? He probably thought the other two were ruddy hooligans.
It's not that tragic. James Beck did die young, and that was a shame, but most of the others were simply old men by the time it started. If they'd lived for twenty years after the end of Dad's Army they would have been a hundred.
@@thegrimreaper1991 Your point being? Does that not make a death tragic. By that logic no suicide or unintentionally death of a person caused directly or indirectly by themselves would be tragic. To that I say what a grim and quite frankly sad world view you have.
That was so sweet! Ian Lavender as Pike was always my favourite next to Clive Dunn's Jones. I liked Ian Lavender even more when I found we liked the same tv program and liked sci-fi :) Really sweet guy!
It’s sad that most of them were dead by the mid 80s. Mainwaring, Wilson, Godfrey, Walker, Frazer and Yeatman were all dead by 1985. Only Pike, Jones, Pike’s Mum, Mrs Fox, Sponge, Hodges and the Vicar were alive in 1986. Now it’s only Pike and the Vicar.
"What are you blowin' that for? They don't work if you suck em'." That sounds like it's straight out of a Dad's Army episode, not sure it was though. So naughty.
MultiDejohn sadly true. I read about that. He was a great television show interviewer, and host i have seen him interview the cast of dad's army, and some of the cast of Allo Allo.
That's thanks to General Kitchener's insisting on a regimen of daily exercises for his men. Hence the term supercalisthenicskeeptheoldsoldiersfromageing.
Someone i know reckons he would give Ian Lavendar a lift to London to film DA in the 60's. I think Ian lived at Redditch then. Funny they look very similar now Ian is older?
Ian Lavender is only early 40s here but already silver haired like Bill and Clive beside him. Apparently he was already greying in his 20s and dyed his hair almost every day on set.
It's weird isn't it - Clive Dunn was famously able to play much older characters while a relatively young age, like how he was only 48 when _Dad's Army_ started, but clearly had the series been made 20 years later Ian Lavender could've done just the same thing. A bit of makeup, a pair of glasses and/or facial hair and he'd have been able to pass himself off as a 70-something Jonesy type in exactly the same way.
I was curious about that too. He along with Ian Lavender are sadly the only notable 2 cast members left from the show. I am not sure if any of the younger non speaking members of the back row of the platoon are still around.
beingsshepherd I also never tire of watching him and had exactly the same thought. Absolutely can't get enough of them. Irreplaceable - regardless. Wouldn't even trouble with the modern version.
General Kitchener wrote them.At times he was interrupted by the whirling dervishes, spinning around with their sharp swords,, trying to take people out at the knees. At times, they'd enter the room, crawl along the floor so nobody could see them, and when they got near they'd start spinning and slicing. This would interrupt the writer, not to mention make it hard for him to walk home without a foot that was sliced off in the attack. Hence the film making term - on the cutting room floor.

I think Jonesy was entering the realm of fantasy there.

That was a killer line. Mainwaring's pained and dismissive delivery was perfect.

Jones really grew into his character. A rarity on Tv
Gold! Ian Lavender seemed to really enjoying seeing Jonesey again
What I liked about Dads Army was you could take to a lot of the characters it was very tragic James Beck died young as he did.
It's not that tragic.

There's no Frank Williams who played the vicar in this. He's still alive at the time of typing this.

ian lavender looks very young here. his hair has gone all white?
Clive Dunn....always trying to grab as much airtime as possible...
Why is Ian Lavender's hair so grey in this? I thought he would only be in his early 40s here.
if you look at early 70s-mid70s Dad's Army episodes he had some bits of grey then. He'd be about 43 in 88?
my mate went grey at aged 21, so.......
Otis, Ian went grey when he was 16. He dyed his hair in Dad's Army.
Kutta Kyte my hair is turning gray and I'm only 16
Man pike had grey hair at 16 and James Beck died with basically none.
