I opted for Lollar Minis in my Serus J. Went back and forth between this and the Fralin P-90s. I just didn't want to deal with the hum in the live setting. Haven't tried the noise cancelling yet. I'm happy with it.
My main gig is bass so that's where my strong money is. But I have a P90 LP copy that's a joy to me. She's the cheapest electric guitar I own but her 'no-name' P90s are So sweet. The guitar ? A 2017 Harley Benton SC450 P90 GT. Unlike some more expensive guitars I have, she was sorted straight out of the box. She has that harmonic rich P90 tone, more so than the Seymour Duncan P90 I have in another guitar. Who knew ??
Great discussion here. I am admire your playing very much. I know you play diverse styles of music and have an appreciation for earlier eras of music. I have some Lollars CC pickups and I have lots of love for but I am thinking of getting something with P90s to do that Kenny Burrell/Grant Green late 50s/early 60s. The jazzers usually recommend the Lollars 50s wind but to me those Burrell/Grant sounds aren't really that clean. (Of course, through a 5A3 Deluxe not much is.) Looking for fat clean / edge of break up and not really twang. I did a low wind Fralin in a Humbucker cover in a Les Paul back in the day and it sounded quite characterless. (It might have just been in that guitar.) Are something like the Brandon Wounds too hot to cop a jazz tone? I HAD been thinking of doing stock Gibson P90s at they are around 8k but it seems they are lacking love here. :)
I have a Tele Deluxe with Lindy Fralin P92’s, which are WideRange Style, Humbucker sized, hum canceling, P90 voiced pickups. They aren’t exactly P90’s? They lean a little more towards Humbucker, but still have that P90 QUACK! I chase Tone, but I agree that the QUEST, can take you away from the ‘real’ Tone manufacturers...your hands! PRACTICE MUSIC!!! There’s sounds that have the right vibe, and respond to your playing, that are “Close Enough”. Amp, Pick, Pedals, String Gauge, can change your Playing/Tone as much as the absolutely “PERFECT” pickup? Still there’s always the thing, that does that THING? Thing...
Question... P90 pickups are single coil pickups. Does anyone know what would happen if you wired two P90s together in a humbucker configuration? Has anyone tried it? If so, how was the tone.

Gotta agree with RJ the noiseless pickup are just missing something. And to me the noise is part of the sound - especially with p90s.

I've the vintage hot p90's in a custom shop Les Paul Jr. And it's freaking amazing, a bit bright but Fralin are where it's at.

You could wire them in series but you don't get neck or bridge selection, just 1 position both together but need to eq it to pull out the woofyness
