Chris Broussard & Rob Parker Dispute Kevin Garnett Saying His Era Couldn't Play in Today's NBA

- THE ODD COUPLE - Chris Broussard & Rob Parker react to Kevin Garnett saying the following: “I don’t think guys from 20 years ago could play in this game,” he explained. “Twenty years ago, guys used their hands to control players. Now you can’t use your hands. That makes defense damn near impossible. Can you imagine not hand-checking Michael Jordan? Naw.”
“The fact that you can’t touch players gives the offensive player so much flexibility,” Garnett continued. “Defensive players have to take angles away and stuff like that. But if you have any creativity and ambition, you can be a great offensive player in this league.”

The hypocrisy of sports commentators is that, "LeBron, Harden, etc would not have been able to play in the 80s and 90s". But tell them about their favourites not being able to play in this era, they catch feelings.

It’s controversial to old people. Anytime you say their god MJ can’t make the league today, they go crazy.
This is just how older dudes think. They always think their era was tougher than the current era. If you talk to a baby boomers or Gen X you are going to get different answers.
And it does just stop at basketball or sports. Back in the 70s a Janitor could provide for a family of 4, own a house with a white fence, a car and the mom doesn’t have to work. And my dad tells me it’s easier than I think to survive out here, I just gotta go out and do it. Turns out i pay like 20% more in rent than he does on a mortgage for his house right outside of downtown. Trying to buy a house these days is a nightmare. Theyre saying it for both sides. They'd all adapt to the style of the era they played in.

@@firstlast9916 Uncoordinated? Hmmm.... I don't see it. I see arguably the most athletic specimen of all time.
Nobody said those players couldn't adjust to todays game. I believe all of the professional athletes would be able to be up to standard of their era.
What KG is saying, is take those guys from back in the day "AS IS" and drop them on the court today, most of them would get dragged and ran out of the gym.
With few exceptions, todays players are far more strong, fast, and skilled. The only argument is that they are less physical, but they are just playing by the rules of the game, like every other era!
Reggie Miller and Ray Allen would average 35 a game today.
Stop it! Steph is a better shooter than both and he has never averaged 35
@@mohammedahmed8272 a young Ray Allen could do everything
@@jimmymorris9278 he's not a better shooter than Curry.
So y’all disagree with a HOF but y’all have never even dribbles in a NBA game.
The guys that ain’t play think they know the most lol
These guys are basically just focusing on the game back then, reminiscing on the previous era's, the comment from KG is based on players from then, and the Era of today, yet they trying to twist things.
KG is right they would get fouled at quick
The same way you say 90s players would adapt, so would today's modern players to a more physical game. Except you neglected to mention that
Rob and Chris along with Skip, Stephen A, Barkley and Kenny smith all need to retire from these sports networks. The hate they have in their hearts for this new generation is sad and pathetic. These old heads need to go. Ur era is over with and those players are not coming back to lace it up and get back on court.
Facts. They sound so sensitive & hurt... lol
So guys in todays game couldn't adjust in the 80s and 90s game but MJ , Bill Russell and Cousy would adjust 😑. WTF IS GOING ON HERE
Y’all don’t understand the freedom and simplicity for a player in this space and pace game we play today.
Jordan would have to lay off the cigars and alcohol in the locker room if he wanted to keep up in today's NBA
These old heads who NEVER PLAYED AT THE PRO LEVEL be trying to tell hall of famer 's that they're wrong is just funny to me. I do believe that some players could adjust to today's game just like I believe some players of today can adjust to yesterday 's game. Someone needs to tell these old heads that players today grew up playing ball in the play grounds where fouls are often hard as well as the defense. So trying to discredit them based on today's rules in the league is just a desperate attempt to prove that you're the better era. Maybe it's best that the old heads retire with the old heads they use to cover. Just a thought
Chris they didn't let them carry in the 90's? They cracked down for one or two years and then it was back to the norm
I Know What KG Is Saying He’s Not Talking About Magic MJ Or Any Of The Greats He’s Talking About The Mookie Baylocks The Davis Brothers Those Guys Couldnt Play In This Era Cause The Greats Are Greats
Yeah he meant Defensive specialists. These guys don’t listen 😂
As far as guarding “on ball” hand checking makes scoring more difficult. But there used to be a rule called “illegal defense” which prevented playing certain types of zone defense. Team defense is much easier now then it was.
As much as you can say that “great players adapt”, we can only compare what we have. Players that are big (7 ft or more) can now shoot and dribble like guards. The traditional slow back to the basket center just can’t run up and down the floor with the PF and Centers in this NBA.
Exactly. Demarcus cousins was taken out of the game yesterday for being too slow. Jimmy butler was scoring on him on every play on switches. Coach took cousins out.
80's, 90's and early 00 might probably was the best era of the NBA... Those guys were by far much tougher back then. If you take the top ten of today's games and put them back in those days and even earlier, they be average to good but not great. If you take the top stars of the past they would be overwhelmingly dominant.
90s basketball was trash, i watched 3 full finals game and jordan ain't get doubled once
I guess KG is unaware that Jordan played without hand checking and he was 38-40 years old. He still put up better seasons than some of the best young players today with bad knees and back while also playing better defense.
I love the NBA, but give me 90s to mid 2000s over this era EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK. It’s not even close. There’s a reason MJs era is still more beloved than it is today.
It’s beloved because of Jordan not because it was that much better. Jordan made the league. The ratings dropped the years he left.
He shot horrible
And he wasn’t 40
Based on the title I thought KG was gonna be calling today’s players soft, and some old man nonsense. I don’t think what KG said was that controversial
So often everyone says the game is so much harder then...its fair when guys down today...but its not ok when players say that it's harder now? Big guys that just got 6 fouls can't play
The game is basically played with one true big and the court is spread out. I do think some of the centers couldn’t play due to the amount of screen and rolls that’s run....
That's because the true bigs today have no post game. You don't need screen and rolls for shaq, hakeem, Duncan, they would dominate the post/paint.
every new generation has updated blueprints. respect the og's
Garnett is talking about players’ competence as observed, but Rob and Chris are hypothesising they’d be different in today’s reality. No need to get upset, or “find it hard to stomach”, it’s two different things.
Plus physicality, defense, running into immovable picks, etc.... takes more energy. Players today except for a handful focus on offense. Defense takes more energy.
Bruh hand checking is so overrated people still hand check at your average court and it’s not that big of a deal
Hand checking in a men's league isn't the same as in the NBA LMAO
Greg Popovich said today's game is not even basketball, it's just run up the court, pull a 3. 💯
But all the sports analysts say players today couldn’t play in the 90s, but soon as someone say those players can’t play today now it’s all these excuses.
Not being able to “hand check” if anything would have made it EASIER for his era. MJ would put up 40 points per game. Hell, Dennis Rodman would have put up 20 points & 25 rebounds a night on this era 😂
If I had to label this era, I’d call them ‘League of Friends’….. They hangout during the off-season. Wars no longer exist on the court! Garnett is try’nna sell that book 😂
I think the NBA ratings tell us everything we need to know about the current state of basketball.
Big fan of this topic. But the number of times people talk about it without mentioning the removal of illegal defense rule. They had to remove hand checking because illegal defense rule was gone.
Chris said it best “If you’re great in your era you’d be great in any era”
Very True, players adapt to the rule changes and adjustments of eras'
KG is only talking about this from the defensive side of the ball. He is exactly correct! It is impossible to play effective defense in this era and it sucks! There are some stars who shouldn't be stars, because of the lack of defense played today.
They broke it down perfectly
People should just stop comparing eras...sports do evolve
Not according to these guys. Basketball apparently got worse after 1999 or after Jordan's last chip in 98. And now since they don't play jail ball, it's not "basketball"
Finally people with common sense explain basketball and a different eras
Today's players are far better shooters and way more athletic. Of the 1990's Knicks start lineup, only Patrick Ewing could play in the NBA.
Bro, there's 3 times more talent today than in the 90's, these old heads really think players wouldn't adjust?.
How would Harden adjust to hand checking ???
@@ranma36 imagine thinking hand checking gonna stop harden from stepping back
People act like the 90s was literally tackle football or mortal combat. It was definitely more physical but people play it up in their minds to a totally unrealistic extent. Also, evolution of the game happened for a reason. 4 big reasons named Dirk, LeBron, Durant, Curry. These guys came along and were so unique and such mismatch problems for nearly everyone that the old school had to adjust to them and not the other way around. I think there's definitely quite a few players from the 90s who would benefit from today's style, but nothing crazy like Jordan now would average 50pts on 70% shooting and win the championship if he joined the Minnesota Timberwolves like alot of people probably think.
