      Great interview. I hope that now, with the new South Korean President, tensions will go down. These guys have a very clear vision of the international scenario. Obviously North Korean nuclear program is only defensive and no country needs to feel it as a threat. US and South Korea must stop doing invasion drills in front of them and find diplomatic ways to end the isolation of the country. Only North Koreans have the right to remove their government and decide their future.

    • @TheRachaelLefler
      @TheRachaelLefler 7 лет назад +3

      I saw a cool documentary on Netflix about a few men who defected into NK from the US military during the Korean War. They basically pampered them because they could use them actors to play American villains in their propoganda movies. So everything that's hated about capitalism having winners and losers exists in NK too. Winners = the top government officials and people/families they favor. Losers = everyone else in the country. I guess it proved to me that there is always social inequality, it's just that in our society it's more fair (though not entirely fair). In NK and other places it's all based on connections to the elites in the government. Or if you can be an especially useful tool. They could feed everyone, but they don't. That's what's depressing. They give the minimum and keep everyone in a state of fear of scarcity. So that they prefer their leader's breadcrumbs to death, so they don't dare to ask for the whole slice of bread.

      Leschatsmuets He is saying that Donald Trump will start a war for no reason.
      Also meme how Donald Trump is bad, but then he says that pulling China away from NK would be a good thing - that's what he has done.
      also funny how every positive remark about what the USA has done is assigned to "the USA" and how every negative remark is assigned to "Donald Trump"
      >when young adults think they are political experts and decide they can read Trump's actions because le drumpf is very stupid and a dummie.
      The kid is smart, just not sure why he is acting like he knows everything with little information regarding the recent conflict.

    • @MsJackson1330
      @MsJackson1330 7 лет назад +22

      Hag so because Donald pulled China away from nk (which he hasn't at all whatsoever , not sure where you are getting this info from) he can't be a bad person? one action does not negate the others. you seem to be the only one speaking as if you know everything. they merely gave their opinions

    • @zazollo

      No, that's exactly why I am pointing it out - he isn't expressing opinions, just randomly talking and treating the president like an extremely stupid individual who doesn't know what he's doing. I'm not even supporting Trump, just weird when people watch two episodes of "Politics 101" and think they already know everything.

      It seems North Korea has been opening their borders to more and more foreigners as of the recent years (well at least that's my perspective on it from all the random North Korean related vlogs popping up on my feed) Would you say they are getting stronger because of the income gained from these tours?

    • @FP19487
      @FP19487 7 лет назад +28

      The only coup/rebellion that can happen within NK will be done the top ranking officer. Kim know this and killed some of them using anti aircraft gun to strike fears. Its highly unlikely for the citizen to do that. Does fuckers don't have enough food to feed themselves, only have shovel and they are going to go against the trained, well equipped, properly fed and massive in numbers brainwashed soldiers? Good luck. Kim would rather nuke its peoples rather than ever lose power.

    • @FonKii

      MrAdonis258 I didn't think the citizens could do anything either as impoverished as they seem to be. Kim Jong Un is a clever one.

  • @SleepingSasuke

    I can't even begin to imagine what living in North Korea must feel like. It all sounds so horrible. As if it's straight out of a dystopian novel. I don't know how high the chances are but I agree that North Korea needs to implode first. But I'm not sure if people have the courage to do that. Not with a scary person like Kim Jong-Un as their leader.
    This is so informative! Thank you guys so much for sharing your experiences and views!

    • @jillthompson6110
      @jillthompson6110 7 лет назад +23

      It would be hard, if not impossible for North Korea to implode due to a military coup. The officers in the military are closely watched and reported on by their own peers. So if you have 50 officers in the barracks, every one of them are potential spies. You just don't know which one. They also routinely fish for potential traitors by approaching people to test them out how they will react to anti-state comments. If they don't report the traitorous comments to the state, you will be tagged as a traitor. Nobody can trust anybody, so the safest thing to do is to go along with everything what the state does.

    • @SleepingSasuke
      @SleepingSasuke 7 лет назад +9

      Thank you for that reply! I didn't know they handled it like this and yes I agree that this makes it impossible. This makes me think of a comment from another Asian Boss video about NK. One of them mentioned how he thinks people from NK are happier when you think of social interactions because NK people stick closer together. Now I wonder if they can actually trust each other. Who knows if the military plants similar people among civilians?

      Do you live in America? If you do, then besides the starvation, you're basically living in NK with similar propaganda tactics and mental dumbing down of citizens. I'm sure you won't agree with me, but if you really paid attention to this video you would see that what they talk about is similar to what Americans are going through on a mental level.

    Thank you for doing this important work. As an American and a man that has lived through a lot in 60 yrs. I feel nothing but pity for the people of North Korea. (Not including the leader or his cohorts). They have been lied to about history, forced to live hungry and in fear for their lives for just wanting to have the basic things one needs to be able to call a life worth living.
    When I hear these young men speak of atrocities like public executions, it is so sad and unfair. It sounds silly but I just want to shake their hands in friendship and share a meal. We are not monsters and having been taught such things as children makes me so angry at their foolish leaders. How ridiculous it is to have a country starving in these times. God bless them all, I will pray for them and their families. Nobody deserves to be treated like that, nobody!! Peace out!!

      You are very welcome my friend. Since watching these young men and woman from N. Korea speak about life in their country prior to the miracle that protected them as they fled successfully to the South, gives me such anxiety. As an American I have no way to understand how they live in N. Korea if it were not for the important work done by this channel. I am grateful for the information and will make it my job to inform as many people as I can about the truth in that horrible place.
      The people of N. Korea need to rebel against the government to change their futures. I know they are scared but trust me, if they make the effort to under mind the corruption and to fight back,
      " gorilla style" the world will step in and take out that dictatorship and re-educate the people , feed the people , protect the people and show the proud people the merits of their lives in our world. I pray for them every day and will continue to do so until the day every N. Korean is free from oppression

      I think you're right about power ultimately resting with the people; when people get fed up, the government eventually gets dumped. Nonetheless, doing so is a lot more dangerous and difficult than it sounds. They do deserve our sympathy -- a lot of it.

    • @boogiedown7608
      @boogiedown7608 7 лет назад +8

      dalexfilms Agreed. They aren't even allowed to travel from province to province. It's not as simple starting a civilian uprising when you don't have tanks and artillery. I wish we could help the North Koreans but I also feel like meddling in these problems is what got us here in the first place. There is no solution I can remotely think of. America would definitely need the help of China to accomplish anything which I doubt would happen. And I feel the North Korean regime would burn the entire country to ash before it gave up power. The "if I can't no one will" approach. It feels hopeless!

    I appreciate how honest all the interviewiees are and how they stand up for their freedom of speech and for their opinions. They really educated themselves since they've escaped North Korea and they seem to understand more about international politics than many others, even though they've been brought up in a state where they've been fed historical lies.
    Pil-Ju's arguments always seem to strike me the most - he seems truly concerned but also very educated about the entire topic (as I said all of them are) and he makes great points.

    The scary thing is in my high school, the topic of north Korea always results in laughter and jokes about testing the "new stuff" on them. thinking north Korea as less a country and more of a talking target, taunting you, just asking to be shot. This video makes me feel bad for them. that kind of talk just reinforces the stereotype that Americans don't care about any country but themselves.

    This is one of the most informative and first-hand interviews about citizens of North Korea that has ever been filmed as far as I know. Well done. This was thoroughly enjoyable because so many people want to know so much about the most private place on the planet. The last statement about the best chance of reunification being that the regime must fall from within is a very true statement and I suppose we must wait and be hopeful that a war does not start anytime soon while the eventual collpase from within will begin to commence. It will take more courage than most people can imagine for someone to devise a plan and act upon the supreme leader's rule in a way that has a chance of success. Best wishes for the North Korean people and may a compromise occur in the not-to-distant future. These men who were interviewed have learned and grown so much and have become amazing people. Props to Asian Boss and the participants for spreading real knowledge and perspective.

    that's why I hate politics & politician all they do is spread hatred and negativity, but when people form different countries interact with each other they might feel different but they respect and can be mindful of each other differences. For example here in the Middle East people view USA as a big bully that you can never trust, because if they shake hand with you today, they will turn their back on you if your benefit with them ended. They have this view based on politics but when they meet nice Americans their view change. Politics is a real cancer to nations :(

    Interesting how in one of the other videos they were talking about how people in South Korea are more unhappy because of individualism, while people in North Korea spend more time with people and things that matter. Really makes one rethink all of the materialistic and individualistic nonsense we've been fed all our lives.

      South Korean here. Generally people find Moon a much better president than the impeached former president Park. I think it's because he takes clear initiatives regarding the recently complicated diplomatic affairs, and the press media is greatly fond of him as of yet. But quite a lot of people who are on the right wing side believe Moon must be a secret North Korean spy(or a commie) to consider having negotiations with them, and fear that because of his actions US forces might leave and South will be swallowed up by North just like Vietnam. I think this ratio of 'Left' to 'Right' is about 6 to 3, and 1 is for the neutral side.

      All I know is that from the presidential debate he stated that he is personally against homosexuality but there shouldn't be any discrimination for being a homosexual, proposing an anti-discrimination law for them. Some people say this law is in essence a legal approval of homosexuality, which means Moon's suggestion is self-contradictory and thus he doesn't quite understand what this law really is.

    I will need to look at the viewing numbers on your videos that are related to or are interviewing people from north Korea as I believe these are so interesting. I think that the world is desperate for information about north Korea; what it is like to live and survive, north Koreans views of the outside world and esp. with the advance of tech, what north Koreans know now they have uncensored information about the world.
    Another interesting angle is about north Korea making and selling drugs to keep money coming in to Kim and I have heard about the people using Methamphetamines a lot, to the point that because it is so cheap and supresses appetite that going round to visit a persons house, they offer you meth like a cup of tea/coffee in the west.

      Your comparison of N.K. to American propaganda is a long stretch.
      The people of N.K. are literally made to (worship) the (dear leader).
      You must leave your radio on all day, you are forced to listen to the
      state sponsored 24/7 bombardment of propaganda in N.K.
      Being a former active duty Marine, I've seen these places in action up close.
      The people are kept poor and miserable. The fat slob that runs that murderous
      regime is a nut case just like the rest of his family.

    As a citizen of the world I'm really tired of all the games political leaders of powerful nations are playing, whether it is for political or moral ideals, a self proclaimed sense of justice or simply economic benefit. Particularly to the case of the DPRK and the US, the US presence has only ever destabilized the Korean peninsula. As is also expressed by some of the people in this video, the primary goal for the DPRK to make nuclear weapons is not to actually strike anyone with them, because in an armed conflict they would certainly lose, any tactician, including Jeong un can clearly see this. When an armed conflict breaks out with the DPRK not even China would want to support them anymore, meanwhile the Korean people will only suffer. In the case the US or any other nation starts a war, Jeong un might actually be forced to use his weapons because he is backed into a corner. It's always interesting how the US thinks North Korea is provoking them, but what about those 6+ feet tall buffed up US soldiers with sunglasses standing on the DMZ, not to mention the show of military power, it's just childish, undiplomatic and pathetic. It would be best for Korea if the US would withdraw from South Korea all together and hand over the bases to the South Korean forces, simply to reduce provocation. Just let the regime collapse on it's own eventually, because the way the country is currently running is not sustainable long term in any way. In the unlikely event that the DPRK should choose to start a war with the US (or other superpowers), the US military would be back in the blink of an eye anyway (Referring to bases in Okinawa, Saipan and Guam).

    • @EndlessNameless137
      @EndlessNameless137 7 лет назад +8

      +Bad L There is no world citizenship. There's no world currency. And there's no "world diplomacy". US withdrawing from South Korea would be a death sentence to both our allies in the ROK as well as Japan. It would be the ultimate betrayal and it cannot be allowed to happen.
      Instead, the US needs to work very closely with China to pressure DPRK economically to back down and relinquish its nuclear arsenal. Only then can East Asia (and the world) know peace, however fleeting it may be.

    • @Alienasa1
      @Alienasa1 7 лет назад +1

      I Want To Believe, it is your right to hold that opinion of course but I strongly disagree. First of all you take my citizen of the world identification too literally. It is more of a gesture that my national citizenship is irrelevant to my opinion on this matter and I'm a human being speaking to fellow human beings in the best interest of all. Also, Ultimate Betrayal? Elaborate. What if the new South Korean leadership opts to reduce US military presence in the country? Also why the obsession with the DRPK nuclear arsenal? Are you forgetting that every major world power has active nukes and you're saying that's not an equally large issue? It's not important who has those weapons, it's important whether they intend to use them or not.

    • @EndlessNameless137
      @EndlessNameless137 7 лет назад +1

      Bas L Currently the South Korean government does want US military presence. We recently installed THAAD there which is a multi-billion dollar commitment to missile defense that South Korea has asked us to bear.
      Don't forget that Japan is also very vulnerable to DPRK and is well within range of being attacked. They do not have a proper military due to our treaty from WWII. Japan doesn't want the US to leave the region, because if we do they are not safe.
      Finally, it GREATLY matters who has nuclear missiles. Do you know why the world hasn't seen a nuclear holocaust over the last 70 years? It's because there's an understanding that every nation powerful enough to have nukes understands that if they launch a nuclear attack, they are ensuring their own mutual destruction.
      Now rewatch this video toward the end, specifically the part where the interviewees say that most North Koreans would rather die fighting a war today than to starve to death tomorrow. When a people have nothing left to live for there is no longer a guarantee they will act rationally. We can trust China will act in their own self-interest for survival. Same with Russia, France, UK, USA, Israel, India, Pakistan. This is NOT true of DPRK. They are an unstable, starving, and isolated dictatorship that is built on a house of cards.

    • @Alienasa1
      @Alienasa1 7 лет назад

      Arisa Kawano I understand the point but I happen to know that many Koreans (and Japanese) are kind of tired of a US military presence in their country. All I'm basically saying is that South Korea and Japan should have the possibility to kick out the US military if they wanted, but as I understand it they are bound by agreements and economic pressure to have US military bases there since WW2.

    • @candicehoneycutt4318
      @candicehoneycutt4318 7 лет назад +3

      I'm sorry to tell you, but as citizens of the world, we are sacrificial pawns. If you think our leaders genuinely care about your life or happiness, you must be living in another world or something. They'll gladly throw you to the wolves if it will benefit them.
      That said, us leaving South Korea would be a stupid move on the military's part. SK won't be able to fully fend for themselves in the event WWIII does break out and we're not there to help them.
      Doing that could very well be a repeat of Saigon. We pull out, then the enemy swoops in and attacks, then it's over and we've all lost.

      the thing is, even if america isnt scared, that alone wont do - both south korea and japan, two countries closest to north korea have us military bases because of prior occupation, and they are big targets - the us has not yet been a victim of war in a way where an entire country is starving and terrified because of the conflict; so thats why even if america isnt scared, so many more countries are scared in their place

      Of course America isn't scared because we're on the other side of the ocean. However it's the capital of South Korea that makes this dangerous and scary. Seoul is nearly right on the border of North and South Korea and the vast majority of the South Korean population live in and around that area. It wouldn't be that difficult for NK to launch an attack on Seoul and murder millions of Koreans.
      (However I also know the likelihood of that is pretty small because Kim Jung-Un doesn't want to destroy SK, he wants to combine the Koreas to both be under his rule, and he can't really do that if he wipes out half their population. But that threat is still a very serious one.)
      Also try to remember how small South Korea is. It only takes 8 hours to drive from Seoul to the bottom of SK, while in large US states you could drive for 8 hours and still be in the same state.
      Probably the "best" way of liberating North Korea is to get China and Russia to cut ties with them. Starve the country out of it's food, money, and military and the country will collapse in on itself. We have to break Kim Jung-Un's ego more than anything. He can't do this whole "the other countries are scared of us and my political genius is what forces them to give us their stuff", he has to be forced to show his people that he's actually been begging for scraps this whole time and he will lose all support.

    LOL they keep saying Trump will start a war, but ignore the activities of the leader of NK. Idiocy.

      It's called a power-imbalance. They guy in the stripped shirt clearly explained that the people at the top have enough knowledge of the outside world to recognize their own military/ technological inferiority...and given they want to maintain power, not commit suicide....the motivation behind NK 'empty' threats was also explained in the video..

    I really hate what is happening to the world. Im not in the position to say this even tho i have no information why these two countries are fighting but the US really likes to control each country.

    • @enginerd80
      @enginerd80 7 лет назад +5

      I think China and Russia like to control other countries as well. They just keep loudly claiming that they don't interfere with other countries' business, suggesting that US does. But if things in some other country don't go the way China or Russia doesn't like, there can be severe financial consequences, since both of those countries are very important trading partners to their neighbors. In worst case, if the supply of really low-priced gas that makes the recipient dependent of it, is cut, at winter people would start freezing to death. Countries that have been become/made dependent of the cheap supply can't afford to buy the gas from elsewhere.
      About the reason for the war between Koreas, I've read that after Japanese occupation in Korea ended, there were different ideas on how the country that was recently freed should be run. Apparently, the people in the poor parts of the country wanted the wealth of the rich be divided to the poor (after being taught of socialism by China and Soviet Union), and the people in the rich parts of the country wanted to keep things as they had been. The disputes resulted first a civil war, and eventually the side that wanted a more socialist style country ended up in the north where they were supported by the neighboring China and Soviet Union, and the side that wanted to keep a more traditional system, ended up in the south, where they were supported by US that was still around there because they had just been fighting against the Japanese. Neither side really won, and so the war is still unsolved.
      So basically all people in Korea only wanted peace and better life, but for different people different things would have been “better”. Until recent years, in western countries disputes have been solved by voting etc., and the side that is left as minority has accepted the situation. But lately there too have been situations where the losing side shows signs of becoming violent. I just wish people would learn from the mistakes of the past, and look for compromises.

      Basically NK has broken about every human rights violation (created by the UN) there is, so that's one reason, but more or less, the US has its claws in every country but NK and and Iran at this point.
      The main reason the US is so interested in NK is because of their ties with China. One wrong move and China or Russia can turn against us, which would be an economic disaster for us since they're our biggest trading partners. It's a delicate situation and I feel really bad for the people in NK who are just trying to live their lives, but instead are subjected to all this chaos.

    I love the way these interviews are held. I really appreciate that you ask the question but let them answer fully before moving on. So many interviews (not just NK defector videos) use the questions and interviewer to lead a conversation in whatever direction they want. I love that you simply asked a question and let them lead from there.

    This series of videos interviewing North Koreans was so wonderful. All these people have lived through so much, and they're all so well spoken and had so many wonderful things to say.
    Living in Japan, we hear about a potential war all the time. It's so terrifying and scary to think that it could happen. I really hope somehow a solution can be found. I think everyone would love to see a reunification of Korea.
    Please just don't think so badly of us Americans! We have our problems, just like any country. But the majority of our people see these problems and desperately want to change them! We're not perfect, but change is coming slowly.
    Once we get rid of Trump, I hope our relationship with everyone can improve again.
