Canyon de Chelly is an amazing area with a great historical significance. At first it was home to the Anasazi and, more recently, the Navajo. There are thousands of archaeological sites within and around the canyon. You can visit the canyon two ways; first, there are several overlooks from the top. This is how Tina and I visited it years ago. (Note there are no fees to visit this way.) There used to be one trail that went into the canyon - The White House Ruins Trail - but when we were there this time it was closed. Not sure when/if it will re-open.
The second way to visit the canyon is to hire a Navajo guide. The canyon itself is still home to many Navajo families. So guides are required to protect the privacy of the residents as well as the historical sites themselves. We were fascinated by the ruins and the history, so when Lee reached out and asked if we would like a tour, we said absolutely.
If you have any interest in history, especially Native American history, Canyon de Chelly does not disappoint. And a guide is the way to go. Lee has lived here his entire life, so he knows all of the stories, trails and locations to hear and see. He explained how the ruins were constructed, why they were built where they were, the thought that went into the layout and construction, the meaning of the petroglpyhs and much, much more. He knew where to get the best photographs, what books to read for more information...it was all extremely interesting and informative.
If you haven't been to Canyon de Chelly, I highly recommend it. And I definitely recommend hiring Lee for a tour through the canyon itself. It's an absolutely incredible place.
One last thing; when you are planning, ask what the best season would be to go. In the winter when we were there, a lot of the trails were covered in snow and it was unsafe to hike. The water levels further up the canyon were also high so we couldn't explore all the way in. We are definitely planning to go back when there are better conditions.

Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto are truly hidden gems of the southwest. Was there right when Covid hit and the local Dine(Navajo) were very scared. All campgrounds were closed, I couldn’t even use the bathroom anywhere. The tours were closed. In saying that I had the entire place to myself the morning after a snow storm. The only person I saw was a local selling art. He told me the story of his family. I am now motivated to go back and see it see it from inside the canyon.
This brought back many pleasant memories. Durring a seven week tour of the national parks of the American Southwest. There have been more "Grand" parks included, however Canyon DeChelly was the most magical and we were treated best there.
We squeezed DeChelly in on our next to last day while enroute to the airport.
Fantastic video. The scenery was incredible as were the dwellings. A tour is the way to go.
This was awesome. The private tour aspect would probably be seen as an inconvenience for many, but he seemed full of great stories and knowledge. Beautiful scenery.
We really enjoyed the information that Lee brought for this trip. Typically we just enjoy looking at the scenery, but after the first trip up here, I read up on a lot of the stories and found it fascinating. It was great to get his input as someone who grew up there and knew all the stories and culture first hand.
In 1966 I ventured forth and walked down to the base of the “WhiteHouse” Saw a few Navajo”s but for most part wild, I don’t recall safety rails by Spider rock.
Yes, keep this area away from the maddening crowd.

I need to go back. I was there in the fall of 2014. I also stayed at Spider Rock Campground, but in my camper van. That time of year the stream bed in the canyon was bone dry and the dust/sand was axle deep on the Jeep. I was certain we would get stuck, but our guide knew what he was doing. We were given white peaches plucked right from the tree.
She is freekin hilarious!! But definitely someone you don’t want to mess with. Love her.

I absolutely love this place. I try to go each year during the Thanksgiving weekend for 10 days. Horseback ride, Jeep tour to the ruins and Hiking. The native culture is kso awesome. Chinle is so peaceful and the night sky is off the chart. I look forward to visiting every year. Thanks to my baby for showing me this place. Love it.

Loved seeing the Canyon again thru your lens…..we went there a year ago and took a private tour with Beauty Way Tours as well. Our guide was TJ Hunter. The trip was amazing to say the least and we would highly recommend it to anyone. Got one of my favorite pieces of Native America there from a local artist…..it is a silver and copper storyboard bracelet. We would enjoy going back another time. Wow. We were there and did the rim overlooks. But the history down in the canyon and the informative tour is worth while for a return trip. Love Navajo culture
No amount of videos or photos can really do this place justice. Was the most awesome place i've ever been to. Absolutely incredible. I saw the clouds melt there in '79. I'll never forget that as long as i live. Watch out for the spider!
The story about Spider Woman would definitely keep kids in line. Creepy as hell....but also understandable as a parent who's had many arguments about bed time with my kids.

Hmmm, I remember hiking down, not too far, a couple or few miles? There was a rope ladder that I had no upper arm strength for, so forded the river up to my chest. Once across we were able to visit the ruins, though most were protected with chain link fences. Amazing place. I can understand why one must accompany a guide to protect, but it saddens me that then this is only accessible to those who can afford it.
Yeah, but I understand it. People live there. So you have private property and important historical sites. I guess there was too much trespassing, looting, vandalism so limiting access was the only way to protect it.

My brother and I visited Canypn De Chelly on a 2 week winter vacation in 1980. We stayed in the "motel" at the park.
Temperature 8 F. we were charged only $10 because there was no electricity available.. frozen equipment and power lines down.
We decided to explore the canyon and stopped at a large turn-out, parking lot over-looking White House.
As we arrived a VW with Vermont plates parked next us. A school teacher from Vermont.. Ethan, joined us in a trek down into the canyon.
Of course, it started snowing.
The trail was not so wide, slippery and full of surprises.
We got the bottom where the snow continued.. light, then heavy, then a break and clear skies.
There were no signs, no fences nothing but dead silence except for crows/ravens flying up and down the canyon about 10 feet in the air
and a 6 ft wide creek flowing beneath clear frozen ice. Spectacular and haunting at the same time. We explored the ruins and then made
tea and marveled at the wonder of the place.
Again, silence... except now we hear chanting from up the canyon.... soft and lyrical. As the sound got closer we saw a man
herding a flock of sheep down the canyon toward us and continued on singing louder.
About 100 yards down the canyon he guided the sheep into a tumble weed and rough wood post corral. He shut the gate and
turned toward us, waved and continued his journey down the canyon still voicing his celestial chanting.
We climbed the path to our cars where there was about 6 inches of snow on them.
Ethan motored on and we enjoyed a treacherous drive back to the visitor's center.
We were greeted by a Ranger who gave us a tour and a bit of history and said that he wished we
could visit the ruins and Spider Rock area but it was closed because of the dangerous weather and
impassible path down into the canyon.
We said nothing.
We set up camp in the motel room, and I mean camp... tent and sleeping bags and we cooked dinner with a Primus and a pot.
Whiskey was a welcome life saver.
We survived the night and motored on to our next adventure new Oribi (sp) and a record rain storm in Arizona....and all hiways closed.
That for another time.

Awesome! On our first visit, Tina and I rented a hogan at Spider Rock Campground. Hiked to White House and a monsoon blew in with a haboob and all. Made it back to the hogan and it started snowing. Went to sleep that night with coal burning in the wood stove and woke to about 2" of snow. Such an amazing experience.
Definitely nice to get the jeep tour and see more in the canyon.

we had our "tea party" in a kiva to get out of the weather. . That or get buried in the snow or fall off the path on the way back.
The word for the Canyon is "magical".
My mother and I visited this area several years ago. We took a Navajo guided day trip where we rode on a flat bed trailer. It was freezing. When we arrived to our destination, there were portable toilets available to use, pop-up tents where Navajo women making fried bread. It was delicious and a Iwonderful experience.
Loved this!! Great to see from inside as I drove around the perimeter last July.
It's a whole different animal from the bottom. Wish we'd been there when the water levels were lower and we could've accessed more of the canyon.

Was there a couple of years ago,never thought about taking a tour assumed they just drove to Spider Rock. I was definitely wrong looks beautiful with snow
I think they do go that far in. Depends on the tour you take because there are canyons that branch off. We were limited because it was so wet when we were there. Lee recommended going later in the year.
I've been to Canyon de Chelly three times, first time in 1994, last time 2012, on both rims. Hiked down to White Houe Ruins twice. This place has a magical serenity that I cannot put my finger on. History indicates some very sad episodes. The Navajo were hunted by the army who massacred many of the tribe by firing shots into the alcoves where the tribe were sheltering. Kit Carson was the scout responsible for leading this massacre !
After our first visit, I read a lot of the history and came across the same stories. It was great to go into the canyon and hear those stories directly from a descendant. Amazing place with an interesting history. One of the craziest parts was when Lee took us to a wall with petroglyphs and pointed out paintings from the Navajo and then from the Anasazi and then another set that pre-dated both cultures.
We took one of the trails from the top down to the bottom and back up. Awesome place. When we were several years ago, the camp sites were..........wanting.
We stayed in the middle sized hogan at Spider Rock and had an absolute blast. A monsoon kicked up a snowstorm while we were there. It was one of our favorite trips. This time....it was muddy and wet and a lot less inviting so we stayed at the lodge. Which was rustic and pretty awesome.

We've done the hike to White House too. It was closed when we were there this time and Lee said it may not re-open. Which is disappointing.
@@JerryArizona that IS disappointing.... I did the walk at "regular" temps a couple times, as well. ... and it was just great views. I do hope the A&W is still open!!

@@JerryArizona I spent about a year out there in various cities for my church. Shiprock, Tuba City, Chinle, and Many Farms. That was in the 90's. Still miss the people and of course the fry bread!

This trip was in March. I'd recommend going later in the spring when the trees get some leaves back, or in the fall when they're changing colors.

Thanks! I use a Canon EOSR with a 35mm f1.8 and a gimbal and a GoPro 11.
We toured the canyon with our guide Benny who showed us the cave where he used to make goat cheese as a child.
It's really cool hearing the stories from the people who live there, isn't it?
Which tour did you do? 3hr, 4hr, ??? Thanks for doing this. We have been talking about doing it for awhile and just haven't gotten there. Hotel infor?
I believe we did the 5 hour tour. Definitely recommend the longer tour. And ask about accessibility in the canyon. It was pretty wet when we went so some areas were inaccessible. We stayed at Thunderbird Lodge, which was also rustic and convenient. The gift shop was really cool also.
You said you were there in Winter, what were the dates? We're planning to go in Oct.
I think this was February? Not recommended due to snow/water and the trees don't have any leaves. October should be perfect though.

I didn't have my GPS on and wasn't really paying attention to the distance. We couldn't go as far in as they can because the water levels were too high. I definitely recommend the 5 hour; there's just so much to see.

I can't remember anymore. I think they do full and half day trips. You should be able to see the options and lengths on their website. There was still plenty to explore, but the water levels kind of limited where we could get to.
