In regards to the depression thing, the way I’ve explained it to people is people can be depressed bc that’s a feeling and anyone can feel anything, but some people have depression which is a disorder that can’t really go away, just mitigated. Hey girlies, psych student here (so take my opinion with a mountain of salt) according to the DSM-5 which is the most widely used diagnostic tool in America in order to be diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (which is a mood disorder and not the only disorder associated with depressive symptoms) a person must have experienced at least one depressive episode at any point in their life. The term depressive episode has been kind of watered down in day to day use but there are very strict criteria according to the DSM-5 which are based on the presence of symptoms most of the day more days than not for a specific period of time. Also in order to be diagnosed with MDD these symptoms must not be better attributable to another psychological disorder - which is how sometimes people experience depressive symptoms but aren't diagnosed with MDD. The way we are taught to think about psychological disorders is through a biopsychosocial perspective where typically it is understood that psychological disorders are developed through a combination of biological factors (genes, neurotransmitters, brain structure size etc), psychological factors (attachment styles, thinking patterns etc) and social factors (family relationships, support systems etc) that are both intrinsic and environmental. Both Maya and QT are right in that you can't think your way out of a mental illness and often they are treated by addressing multiple factors to reduce the severity of symptoms (sorry for the insane rant - love the pod guys)
im also a psych student and i was debating if i wanted to do a comment like this just to help inform folks, but i was feeling lazy so im glad someone else took the time to do it 😂 u worded it all in a way that i think even ppl that aren't psych students can understand easily, so props for that :)
adderal is methamphetamine cocaine is actually less psychoactive than most adhd medicines cocaine is also much more destructive to your body and *wildly* more addicitve, although technically less pyschoactive in the brain by % pure + normal usage amounts vs prescribed (common) adhd drugs
Yesss came to the comments to say Maya was close. I'm not good with chemistry at all but I think Adderall and meth are off by like 1 molecule Did not know Adderall was more psychoactive than cocaine, that's super interesting
25:15 I’m currently in CBT therapy to treat and manage my major depressive disorder (my anxiety too, but that’s off topic), at least until I find a drug that works. According to my therapist, the purpose of the treatment isn’t to “cure” depression but instead to identify and address my thought patterns surrounding it. So for example, I know when my depression is flaring up earlier and I might need to change course by doing near-constant self auditing. I ask myself how I’m feeling, why am I feeling this way, why am I thinking this thought, is this really true or fair, why did I say this, is it possible that I overreacted/lashed out, etc. it’s harder to get out of bed when I don’t question and correct the thoughts telling me I’m worthless. It’s also more difficult to get support and love from community if I’m subconsciously pushing them away. It certainly helps me live with depression, even though it doesn’t cure it.
Bro the responses to Maya's tweet have been absolutely insane, and a lot downright misogynistic. I have never seen such an innocuous post attract the most vile people at that scale
I recently came to the realization that „Uno“ (the game) is called that because of „uno“ (the number). I immediately told my best friend and when he also hadn’t thought about it that way I knew, we and our two brain cells were made for each other
she said she hates burning her mouth with hot drinks, so maybe she avoids soup for the same reason? i also would imagine that ppl who grew up/still live in hot climates dont eat hot foods as often, so maybe she just doesn't have much lived experience with consuming hot things in general
@ 19:30 . Thanks for articulating that sobering moment. It's a familiar and ugly feeling that I'm glad I'm not the only one who recognizes it in a similar manner.
In fairness to Maya, in a lot of warm climates hot tea is a really common drink; it literally originates in southern China and Myanmar. Further, drinking warm fluids causes the body to react by sweating to cool itself, and lowering your overall temperature via various other methods. So if you see hot climates drinking hot beverages it makes sense that you might miss the connection between hot drinks and warming your body.
In fairness to Maya, Twitter is a fucking toxic pit of awful gross people now and them telling someone to kill themselves is just their way of saying howdy.
Burma. The official name recognized by the international community is Burma as the name change was only to distance them from a genocide led by the people still in charge
I disagree that everyone gets depressed. My therapist always said that we overuse the word 'depressed' when what we actually feel is sadness. You can be sad, even extremely sad and still not be depressed
@ but you beleive qt has a depression disorder? you cant organise events if youre depressed. you wouldn't even want to. i can barely leave the house or wash myself. i have worse skin conditions than qt, i haven't had a p partner or any sexual relations for over 10 years, and i cant get diagnosed with depression
@@pkrmkn31Okay but QT says she was diagnosed with a depressive disorder. What, just because she can force herself out of bed most days, she can't possibly be depressed? I really hate depression Olympics.
@ no. like the other dude said, shes just unhappy. big difference. wheres the Olympics? have you ever thought what its like for people who actually struggle with depression, but cant get diagnosed with it, yet see people like qt, who has enough money to get a psychologist to diagnose her with whatever she wants, while people like me have to use free mental health services, while shes happily living a good life, that shes just not happy with because these rich people never are happy and always want more. But because they're rich, they can pay people to say they are depressed instead of unhappy. that's just how it works in this day and age, which makes people with real depression even more depressed. maybe the Olympics is the ones paying for diagnoses and then going online advertising it like its something to celebrate.
White educated man here: I also would have said Babe Ruth was black up until you mentioned Jackie Robison. I can still remember his baseball card/famous picture (not sure which it was), and having that tid bit of knowledge, I think I would have correctly guessed BR was white.
i was so surprised at how mean the comments got on maya's tweet bc i saw it when it was recently posted and all i thought was that it could easily be something i didn't notice too bc i never have hot drinks (also for the same reason you said here) but well people can't post silly little tweets anymore
For the longest time, I thought mangoes had a rough texture on the inside, and loved eating them, partially due to the unique texture. Found out recently that I’m apparently allergic to mango juice when I drank the juice and was amazed that the weird tongue texture thing still happened
okay there are two different words and meanings - practising and practicing. practising is repeating and learning. practicing is application of belief or method as opposed to theories

53:35 Everyone is assuming Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth were the same person because of the movie 43, which they probably watched it as kids and assumed all famous baseball players were Babe Ruth
You're thinking about the movie 42. But that came out in 2013, Maya is my age and we didn't grow up with that movie cause we were in high school when it came out. And squeex is older I found out babe Ruth wasn't black like in middle school, so this misconception predates that movie
During Babe Ruth's career he faced racism from fans because people thought he was mixed/black. He also was a key figure for racial integration in baseball. When looking at him now he really just looks like a jolly white dude but racial norms at the time were obviously insane and thats why his racial background is oftentimes confusing for some
I’m actually watching this episode while wearing one of my brand new Wine About It tees!! (The snake one in purple as a matter of fact. I also simply HAD to get the butterfly one as well!) I LOVE both of my new Wine About It tees and they did their way to me HELLA fast!! I ordered them on Saturday the 4th, they were sent out on Wednesday the 8th, and I received them on Monday the 13th. And I live on the opposite side of the country, in Pittsburgh, PA! I know that merch for podcasts/streamers/youtubers/etc typically take a while to get filled, sent out, and delivered so I was thrilled to have my order in my hands within 9 days of ordering it! In fact, this was my first ever time ordering merch from ANYONE (I was never really in the position to do so prior to this drop for a couple of reasons.) and I’m so happy with every aspect of it! (I wasn’t _only_ satisfied with the speedy delivery of my items, I was also _incredibly_ happy with the price(s), the designs, the color choices, and the overall quality of my stuff as well!) Thanks to my overall incredibly positive experience with my Wine About It merch, going forward whoever handles/processes ya’ll’s merch orders will become SUPER acquainted with my information due to all of the Wine About It, Alveus, and QT merch I’mma be snatching up!! lol. Ooookay… I’m gonna stop shilling the (amazing) *Wine About It merch* now. lol. But before I do… if anyone out there reading this currently has the means to buy some and are simply on the fence for any reason - GO FOR IT!! You will NOT be disappointed in the least!! In fact, I’d be willing to bet that you’d be every bit as thrilled as me! 😊
I think depression can be caused by many things and in most cases there is more than one factor involved. Still, I think it goes under acknowledged how many people would be better if outside circumstances improved (financial stability, how they are treated by society, political stability). My depression comes from a variety of things but something that touches my whole life is struggling to have enough money, being more financially stable wouldn’t magically cure me but it would fix a lot of things that make my depression & anxiety worse, especially because therapy is so expensive.
I looked it up and it's really interesting/depressing. Because of certain features of his, apparently the racists of the time assumed he must be mixed. He even got called racial slurs as a kid. Babe Ruth also hung out at black night clubs, dated black women, and fought for integration in the league - all of which furthered the belief that he was mixed. It genuinely just seems like an old school racist speculation that is somehow still pervasive today
As a psychology PhD student this is a time I am frothing at the mouth for this to be a voice call instead of a podcast. (Just special interests mentioned)
My dumb understanding was about the phrase "god bless you" when someone sneezes. I'd never read it before and people say it really quick and would sometimes say "gesundheit" instead, which was like European, so it sounds different than my little American vocabulary. Anywho, I thought "god bless you" was like "gobleschu" or something and just said a stroke-victim, drunk version of "god bless you" until I was probably 15 or 16 and finally figured it out
Maya!! On the one of hot drink tweet if you have bad period cramps may I suggest a warm bev too!! I vividly remember when I realized a nice hot cocoa made my period cramps feel so much better from the inside. Also I remember like oh yeah hot drinks exist and will make me warmer every time winter comes around so if you didn’t grow up with a real winter…I get not understanding this until now
We've all got gaps in our knowledge, and what's difficult about it is the fact that you don't know what you don't know. That's why it's important to learn from multiple spaces, remain curious and never be afraid to ask questions. Even if it seems silly, the answer will always leave you a little more knowledgeable than you were, which is cool.
I’m so glad editor added in Squeex chat during that call I am crying laughing!! I think the misconception for Babe Ruth also comes from the black and white photos making his skin look darker? I thought he was like Cuban or sumn too
You know I never made that connection... I know drinking something cold can make you feel cold but never that a warm drink like will physically make you warm... Like I know it makes you feel nice and warm but not that it warms up your body like that...
I was just diagnosed with autism (finally) this week (my MDD and anxiety were reclassified as being secondary to and symptoms of autism), and my prior diagnosis of ADHD was retained. I think the only takeaway from taking the RAADS-R on your own time is that you should try taking more of the online tests (there are quite a few others), and based on those results, if you feel like you should investigate further, get a professional psychiatric evaluation focused on testing for ASD.
There is a niche online theory that Babe Ruth is actually black/mixed. I don’t know the validity. I have read some things that the color barrier in baseball was not a thing early on. Then became a segregated sport. So maybe some type of tie in with that but really don’t know. But we taking babe to the all time white athlete team.

im also a psych student and i was debating if i wanted to do a comment like this just to help inform folks, but i was feeling lazy so im glad someone else took the time to do it 😂 u worded it all in a way that i think even ppl that aren't psych students can understand easily, so props for that :)
26:05 the sun isn’t even up when I have to leave the house for like half the year lol
Leave before the sun comes up, go home after sunset. Life is good!
Our beloved Tim mentioned. RIP Avicii, truly one of our greatest minds of the 21st century
QT: "I struggle with anxiety"
Maya: "Did you know sharks are on cocaine?"
i really like the green background on qt's side :)
The babe ruth stuff is hilarious
So weird.... My brain is broken that people wouldn't know this :o. Weird...
adderal is methamphetamine
cocaine is actually less psychoactive than most adhd medicines
cocaine is also much more destructive to your body and *wildly* more addicitve, although technically less pyschoactive in the brain by % pure + normal usage amounts vs prescribed (common) adhd drugs
Yesss came to the comments to say Maya was close. I'm not good with chemistry at all but I think Adderall and meth are off by like 1 molecule
Did not know Adderall was more psychoactive than cocaine, that's super interesting
fantastic discussion of depression. thank you for having these conversations so openly and honestly! I will definitely check out the documentary.
I'm going to be so honest here - I am 20 and about a week before Maya's tweet I too came to the realization that hot drinks do in fact make you warmer
I heard "coke could cure depression" and I was like HELL YEAH I CAN KEEP DRINKING COCA COLA and then she said cocaine....
Bro the responses to Maya's tweet have been absolutely insane, and a lot downright misogynistic. I have never seen such an innocuous post attract the most vile people at that scale
it’s some kind of phenomenon that everyone collectively confuses babe ruth and jackie robinson
Maya is so valid for comparing The Walking Dead to the noise of a ceiling fan
Audio listeners don’t know they’re missing LOOKS this week
Middle school thermodynamics are hard, I get it
I recently came to the realization that „Uno“ (the game) is called that because of „uno“ (the number). I immediately told my best friend and when he also hadn’t thought about it that way I knew, we and our two brain cells were made for each other
ok i get never having a hot drink but what about soup? have you never felt warm after soup?
she said she hates burning her mouth with hot drinks, so maybe she avoids soup for the same reason? i also would imagine that ppl who grew up/still live in hot climates dont eat hot foods as often, so maybe she just doesn't have much lived experience with consuming hot things in general
Babe Ruth literally played before black people were allowed to play baseball. Lmao
Everyone gets depressed. Depressive disorders are when the depression is persistent, particularly in the face of changing life circumstances.
i know right. if this girls is diagnosed with depression disorder then what the hells wrong with me
I disagree that everyone gets depressed.
QT has such striking eyes
THE HOT DRINKS TWEET WAS FROM MAYA???
I have ADHD, GAD, OCD, and depression, and I got a 35 on the RAADS. Wild
Maybe you didn’t study enough for it
And this is my point. Misinformation being spread by irresponsible streamers who need educating.
When she said “it’s a wombat” I lost it
White educated man here: I also would have said Babe Ruth was black up until you mentioned Jackie Robison. I can still remember his baseball card/famous picture (not sure which it was), and having that tid bit of knowledge, I think I would have correctly guessed BR was white.
Yesss I thought the same thing!
I think of the movie The Sandlot
Audio listeners. We think they look nice. We like their sets. We like their color coordination. We like their fits. Pretty nice. We perceive them.
Thankyou guys for talking about depression means a lot to me I’ll defs check out the documentary
i was so surprised at how mean the comments got on maya's tweet bc i saw it when it was recently posted and all i thought was that it could easily be something i didn't notice too bc i never have hot drinks (also for the same reason you said here) but well people can't post silly little tweets anymore
also i learned how to call baby horses in english thanks to this episode yey!
I grew up with the metric system and still figured out that a quart was a quarter of a gallon.
Twitter is a really bad/mean place, don’t take any of the mean comments personally, a lot of the people saying the worst things probably aren’t making a positive/meaningful impact on the world lol
"stop any school bus and just get on" is fire
Grounding is one of my favorite things to do after making my coffee in the morning. Unfortunately I live in Washington state and it’s not always nice enough to do so. But if the sun is sunning I’m out there with my toes in the grass sippin on my coffee. 😊
I love that we get to have a peak into maya's life and learn that zombie noises are asmr for her
maybe by “hot horse” qt was thinking of like the word “stallion” ? i def had that association with the word stallion bc of horse books i read as a kid LOL
maya is right that warm drinks dont actually meaningfully warm you up, its mostly a psychological effect, look it up SHEEPLE. i stand with maya
As someone who took Stat Mech in grad school, I can attest to the fact that my professor did indeed at one point say something along the lines of "when you drink a hot drink, you get warmer" in the context of explaining the theory of heat transfer.
with all the peace and love, i want to fix the front of qt’s eyebrows
I loved hearing their conversation on mental health as someone who has struggled with that as well!
And squeex is older
I found out babe Ruth wasn't black like in middle school, so this misconception predates that movie
Its really funny that Ludwig knew Babe Ruth was white but mistook him for Joe DiMaggio in thinking he was Italian.
Or maybe he knew his nickname was bambino and thought that sounded Italian enough to make him italian
Another fun episode. And props to the editing, very well done.
During Babe Ruth's career he faced racism from fans because people thought he was mixed/black. He also was a key figure for racial integration in baseball.
When looking at him now he really just looks like a jolly white dude but racial norms at the time were obviously insane and thats why his racial background is oftentimes confusing for some
25:46 Maya casual AF about being so close to nature that her response to QT's natural remedy for depression is just "I already do that."
lmaooo mayas hot drink tweet from her alt account got into the timeline of my OWN alt account. moots were being mean and i felt like i was undercover
I’m actually watching this episode while wearing one of my brand new Wine About It tees!! (The snake one in purple as a matter of fact. I also simply HAD to get the butterfly one as well!)
I LOVE both of my new Wine About It tees and they did their way to me HELLA fast!!
(I wasn’t _only_ satisfied with the speedy delivery of my items, I was also _incredibly_ happy with the price(s), the designs, the color choices, and the overall quality of my stuff as well!)
Thanks to my overall incredibly positive experience with my Wine About It merch, going forward whoever handles/processes ya’ll’s merch orders will become SUPER acquainted with my information due to all of the Wine About It, Alveus, and QT merch I’mma be snatching up!!
I got my merch yesterday, and wore it to work today while I listen to the new episode 💜
I, like Lud, thought he was Italian because his nickname Bambino. I wonder where the idea that Babe Ruth was black comes from
I looked it up and it's really interesting/depressing. Because of certain features of his, apparently the racists of the time assumed he must be mixed. He even got called racial slurs as a kid. Babe Ruth also hung out at black night clubs, dated black women, and fought for integration in the league - all of which furthered the belief that he was mixed. It genuinely just seems like an old school racist speculation that is somehow still pervasive today
ever since a few streamers took the RAADS-R test, it feels like everyone is an armchair psychologist 🙃
I always just adopted the medical method of: We'll see if it gets better in a couple days. If it ever doesn't I guess I'll just live with it or die.
u guys should have a dedicated animal segment where u share your pet stories or share insect/animal facts, the sharks is a great start
Got the merch and love the fit/design on the shirts and jacket!
As a psychology PhD student this is a time I am frothing at the mouth for this to be a voice call instead of a podcast. (Just special interests mentioned)
your tweet made me laugh even though i knew you were being so serious, not angry and that's how i know i'm grown lmao people need to calm downnnnnn
the babe ruth segment was fucking hilarious
I am BAFFLED that people think Babe Ruth was black. BAFFLED
I do like the color coordination a lot! I noticed the sets being on point instantly!
My dumb understanding was about the phrase "god bless you" when someone sneezes. I'd never read it before and people say it really quick and would sometimes say "gesundheit" instead, which was like European, so it sounds different than my little American vocabulary. Anywho, I thought "god bless you" was like "gobleschu" or something and just said a stroke-victim, drunk version of "god bless you" until I was probably 15 or 16 and finally figured it out
OCD and depression girlies unite😛🩵
I thought he was like Cuban or sumn too
I have a heart-on for wine about it❤❤❤
You know I never made that connection...
Thanks for sharing 💜
I learned about the drinking something hot makes you warm on the magic school bus episode lol and the transfer of heat.
I did in fact really like mayas fit
What about QT
Adderall is what began my deeper addiction. Loneliness at college and cramming for finals has done irreparable damage to me and my life
The whole babe Ruth thing is funny because people always make fun of him playing before non whites could play
10:27 *maya sincerely stares into distance* “SHOULD I DO COKE?”
Fusion having fun on this ep
10:27 So, cocaine is a stimulant, and ADHD meds are also stimulants. I have ADHD friends and when they do cocaine, they don't get all jittery and cokehead-y, so there might be something there
