Wow! A young Jerome Richardson on sax. His Mother lived down the street from me in Berkeley, CA. I met him one day walking down the street, and I invited him to come to the club where I was playing with my group in Oakland CA in Jack London Square. Awesome memory!

I saw this band live in St. Gallen in Switzerland in 1961. They played all these numbers there as well. It’s great to see them again now.

An absolute loss of a legend. No one will ever do what he did- the breadth and depth of his work and in so many different roles and genres. Breaking racial lines and overcoming poverty too. He was a total gift to us all and his legacy will live on

My favorite part of this video is Clark Terry's playing, but objectively the most unique part of this band for this era was probably the women players on trombone and piano. Petty Bown should be better known. There aren't many pianists who have based their style on Count Basie, and she does it so beautifully.

Is this the band he took to Europe and went bust? Really sad , but Q decided to stay in France and study composing, arranging, etc. For 2 years. When he came home, he was ready to 'diversity ' and do a lot of writing. The master. Be well , Q. 💜
