We get in the car, white vinal seats, 3 on the column and the green ignition key light on. Shit, my thought at the time, we made it. This little light, it was the "symbol" of American greatest for this 13 years old kid.
Why would you even think of ruining this beautiful survivor just to shove in a big engine?! Sounds like something a 16 year old idiot would do! What a shame that the owners weren't more concerned about who they sold it to. I don't even want to know what happens to this poor old Volare. Ugh!
If it was mine I'd bring it to the nationals in carlisle and display it in the survivors tent, that is the cleanest one I've seen with that amo6of miles, nice score 👍.
What a beauty. I had one, 1977 vintage, that my wife and I drove all over the place doing Civil War reenactments. You'd be surprised how much stuff you can fit in one of those when you take the back seat out! We drove from Gettysburg to Chickamauga and a lot of places in-between. One of the best cars I ever had.
I think it should be preserved as it is. Maybe delete the lean-burn if it has it, and you could replace it intake and carb with a 4 barrel setup. That would really wake up the 318 and it's reversible later on. But if you do, definitely keep the motor looking stock, no chrome air cleaner or valve covers! Just my $.02...
I’m torn with the decision too. It sure is a nice car. If you fixed the few things that are wrong you could put that into a factory stock class at the Mopar Nats and clean house. But I know that’s not your thing. If it was in a little worse shape I’d say go for it. But they are only that original once.
Since it is a V8 I would bolt on some Police Sway Bars to get rid of the lean around turns (safety) then leave the rest alone. Didn't these have a recall because the tops of the fenders rusted out? May want to check underside of fenders out to preserve. BTW I need to get one of those metal garage ceilings. Does it sweat in the winter?
Absolutely GORGEOUS car! I just bought a 77 Volare Wagon in Similar condition but mine has the 360 in it and it has Dog Dishes on it. I bought it because I was looking for something that I could take the Gf and grandkids to cruise-ins, Cars and Coffees in plus when I want to pop over to San Diego or up to Vegas for a car show we have something that I can gop to the show in and then after the show we can drive over to the Naval Base roll my sleeping bag out and sleep in it at the Rec Area and not have to pay for a hotel room then go to the beach the next day.
Keep it stock, a rare survivor like that is hard too find. Let the wife use it as her own personal classic and find another decent 2 door to build as a sleeper.
Those Volare and Aspen are pretty decent cars and worth saving . My parents owned one of these F body Chrysler cars a 76 Aspen sedan . The mechanics are sound but the body rusts if not addressed especially in the snow belt areas . 😊
Keep it as is, you are lucky that the 318 does not have the lean burn system on it and everyone else that had a car with it knows what I am talking about.
How could anybody in their right mind alter that car in any way? New subscriber here, that car is as cherry as it gets. I owned a 79 Aspen that I still miss.
I'm with you,,,,torn! That thing is a real time capsule! It is a twin, same color and everything as the Volare I took Drivers Ed in back in 1977. Thanks for the up-date!
Your title caught my attention. Perfect 76 Volare. I’m 66 years old and I was a mechanic since I was 16 years old. I worked on these cars when they were new. I can appreciate the fact that it has been well kept. What I don’t understand why would you spend any money on this type of car and also this model car in particular. These cars and the other models on this platform were not good cars. They were very poorly built at the factory. They were a poorly designed car which made the finished product quite frankly a terrible car. Braking, acceleration, ride quality, handling were all rated at the bottom of their competition. I remember these cars coming in for service with only a few thousand miles with ignition, electrical, fuel problems and even rust! The shop where I worked at the time was down the street from a Chrysler Plymouth dealer. Countless people came in so frustrated with the dealer because it would not fix their cars because they claimed the car was working fine. Meanwhile the customer would tell us that half the time the car would not start. When it did start it would run rough, stall, had no acceleration to the point older women were scared to go on the highway thinking it would stall out or get hit from behind. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so if you think it is a good looking car that’s your opinion and I respect it. You asked in the comments what you should do with it. Well, if it was me, I would not spend a nickel on this car. Pick a sportier car if you want a faster car. I would stay away from any Chrysler product built after 1974. Pick up a GM or Ford product. It seems you like cars from the 70’s. You know what was great car that is sporty but is also a beautiful car that does everything excellent. An Olds Cutlass in any trim with the Olds 350 or 403. A 76-77 Cutlass Supreme is one of the best overall cars of the mid to late 70’s. Any Cutlass from 70-77. I bet you would love it. Don’t spend your hard earned money on that Volare. Take it from an older man that worked on all these cars. Buy something else. I’ll prescribe to your channel. You have a nice night and good luck to you sir.
4 door cars rarely came with the passenger side door mirrors, I think someone mounted that mirror, but why they put it on the fender is anybody's guess. That car is a good example of what UV rays do to a car over time, but because it is has been covered it is damn near perfect. Those cars usually don't bring high dollar, but I think you have an exception there.
The R/T definitely deserves some love. That's a spectacular car. Remember those new back in the day. The Volare is a beautiful time capsule of the mid-70s. I say update with brakes, creature comforts, better tires. A really comfortable cruiser. But leave it looking original, as is. She's a beaut!! Look forward to more. Be safe and stay well.
Took the 88K original mile 318 out of my '76 Valiant...forged I-beam rods, KB pistons, '70 340 crank, windage tray SUM-6901 cam, dual roller timing set, and some lightly worked '90-vintage 360 "308" heads. Factory casting & machining was so bad that the block sloped to the rear, the back cylinder/piston/rod/crank angle was badly off. The milling of the deck was so much that I had to put Cometic 0.060" thick head gaskets to get the compression ratio down to 9.45-1 and had to use a Performer Air Gap intake to "Make the spread" across the valley. Has TBC headers, 2.5" stainless exhaust with an X-crossover. Still looks stock, it's a West Coast car with no rust/rot and the interior is perfect. That mirror? Not stock, it's an add-on, but that Aspen is 'minty fresh' because these things had recalls for rot (especially fenders)
