Backups are key for everything because if it hasn’t happened yet, it will happen. I had a shoot a couple of years ago that was almost bad. Was on a football field and I saw a wall of rain appearing in the background with no time to get to cover. I knew there was a chance of rain so I grabbed a couple large ziplock bags before leaving the house. I got them over my FJ400s before the wall of water hit and just stood out in the field holding on. 🤣
Disaster avoided. Lesson learned to keep gallon ziplock bags in my kit for instances like this to cover my strobes quickly.
Thanks for sharing!
James I just got my 3X4 and 1X4 Pro Light Mods in. Headed to a local high school to get set up!!!! PUMPED!!!!
I hope you've watched my "tips" video - tag the IG account!
Yes I have and will tag you and Westcott!!!!! Prior to one of my media day shoots and I do a lot of them. I usually watch a few of your videos just for some extra inspiration. Appreciate you keep rocking James!
Also had a shoot this Christmas where I grabbed the 5x7 cloth backdrop for my 8x8 x drop pro. This venue had a “junk” closet and I made a frame with pipe and drape tubing and a tablecloth. The job was over an hour away so no way I could have gotten back to get it. Things went off without a hitch.
This recently happened to me! Kept my cool and continued. I was using speed lights and a gust of wind toppled one. The speed light survived, but the aux. battery pack separated and flew off and crashed! I have a funny shot of the subjects faces looking horrified as the stand came down! Everything survived, barely a scratch. I was fortunate. I made sure my assistant held on to the stand from that point on.
Thanks for sharing Ivan!
Great Video!!
before you broke in there I was thinking if that had happened to me I would have been mad at myself and no-one else. I probably wouldn't be to good at playing it off though.
This is why I prefer to use my AD200’s on location as I can vs the AD400’s incase they break
I had this happen to me when the wind took out my Godox AD300. I should’ve used some weights to hold my c stand down. Learn from my mistakes! It cost me nearly as much to fix it as a new one. But I couldn’t see “wasting” a strobe so I fixed it.
Yes, live and learn!
Ouch!!! Hate when that happens!!!😢
Yes, but you can't show it! 😬
You’re right you can’t!!!!!
James great point to be aware of gear and where it’s placed.
Yeah, I was "reminded" how important it can be!
I had to replay that first few seconds a few times. Well Damn - let me get out the spare.
Love this reminder! I sure needed to hear this one today! Thank you
Sorry to hear that but I hope it helped!
@@QuantzPhoto It does. Mistakes happen, but it's what you do with them that matters. Thank you. I love your work and your videos. My photography has improved hugely because of them .☺
About 3 years ago I had a client try to help me clean up and they dropped my R5 with 11-24 down a set of brick stairs. Obviously in the moment I freaked out internally but I had my backup body and some glass I could make work and we were able to finish the shoot as scheduled. Canon Carepak took care of me and that client has recommended me numerous times since.
Oh wow, that's a good(bad) one!
I work in a company where we travel all over the country to photograph children in schools.
When we arrived at the client's place, 1 hour away from the company's office, and started setting up the studio for the photo session, the colleague discovered that his camera was left in the office on the table from the previous day's school photo session.
How did we solve the problem?
A colleague jumped into the car and rushed to get the camera, while I went about my daily business as if nothing had happened.
The customer didn't even realize that something had gone wrong, because why stress the customer unnecessarily.
The job was done and everyone was happy.
And that's how you do it!
We always called these moments "chariot rides..."
You handled it like the pro you are. I bet that player felt bad but moments like this happen. Before I became a full time commercial photographer I was a director of photography at magazines in NYC and an advertising shoot producer. I've seen things like this happen on set and if a photographer freaks out you remember that way more than someone who turns around and jokes or says "not a big deal...give us 5". Alternatively if a photographer yells at an assistant that is the ultimate bad look in my book. Years ago, I was shooting in Jack Studios in NYC. I think it was like the 14th floor. A new second assistant was moving a very tall ladder off set and he placed it against a column off to the side. A minute later we all turned to see the ladder slowly tilt away from the column and smash thru a few window panes. I was frozen because I didn't want to go look out the window down to the street in case anyone was walking on the sidewalk. Luckily, the sidewalk was empty. I took the assistant aside and told him he has to pay more attention to the gear than the cute girls on set...! (Never hired him again). And ps. I just broke one of those Profoto lights in my studio last week. I stupidly put it on a light case while I was unpacking and it just rolled and fell like 8"to the floor and cracked the light tube...
Thanks for sharing your perspective and story! The empty sidewalk had to be a relief!
2 years ago my fj400 went over a waterfall. A fisherman recovered it. For my I had it replaced with my insurance. As i was shipping the light to the insurance company i put a battery in from another strobe and the light worked. Go westcott
Ha, now there's a story! 🤣
@@QuantzPhoto yes sir. Still got a new one lol. Btw you helped convince me to get into their system. It was definitely one of the best decisions I ever made in photography. Thanks
@@pianofinger glad to hear it!
The same way that reflector took the blow on the light the fell, keep those lens hoods on at all times, kids.
I haven’t used a lens cap in about 5 years, the hoods NEVER come off, even in my bags lol. The only exception is if I have to fly, but other than that, I don’t even fiddle with lens caps 🤷🏻♂️
Shooting senior night basketball. Before 4 th quarter put my Z8 and strobe on score table. Hard thrown ball was missed by player and camera took a direct hit. After 8’ of flight, it was stopped by the media tower holding sound system. I was sitting under a basket watching all this. 😬
😱
Good catch! Was that from the 360cam?? Looks like the reflector took the direct hit. Glad to see the FJ400 stood up to the hit . Wind has knocked mine down once and it took a direct hit on the battery side. The same happened to me, it ejected the glass dome but everything else held up and thankfully I had a softbox on it, so the glass stayed in softbox. The only thing I would add to your video and as advice for your viewers is this is also a reason to have both General Liability insurance and to have your equipment insured as well. Had that glass cut someone or had the head hit someone or something and injured them that could have been bad. Or had the head damaged the nice wood floor, that could have been a claim against you as the photographer.
Great points I should've added for sure! And it was the Osmo Pocket 3 that was filming at the time.
I coordinate creative for my company. Our building does have insurance requirements for vendors working in our space.
It's just like when I purchase a product. I care as much or more about how they handle issues that arise than 5 star ratings. Your story on the air craft carrier .... some pucker moments there.
Thanks Bill! Yeah the problem on the ship was I couldn't figure out what was going on!
At least it wasn’t a Profoto D2😂
