I have played the classical flute since I was 10 years old and really got burnt out on it. Hearing your jazz flute has really re-inspired me to get back in the game and color outside the lines. Thanks!
this is so feel good and laid back man, just saw a Heineken advert that ended with a flute improv, searched jazz flute and this popped up, love this sound!
My 10 year old daughter chose the flute today. We found this vid while I was trying to show her the endless possibilities. If you wouldn't mind sharing an encouraging word for Emily in WV, I'd appreciate that.
im 14 have been playing sax for like 4 yrs and flute for only 1 but i think your amazing and now im going to try so i can convince my band teacher to let me do a flute solo in jazz band your great glad we have people who belive in the cause of the jazz flute!!!!
I use to play at a club called the Jazz Safari years ago when it was in LB California but it is probably not the same owner but it brought back some great memories of playing there. Thanks for sharing!
i play the flute for my concert band, and saxophone for jazz band, because flute isn't one of the original jazz instrument. and you are AMAZING at jazz with flute!
I really like this guy! You can find him all over you tube! I play sax and now... I'm going to pick up a flute! If anyone has made that transition before can you leave a comment to help me out?
That Curious Artist I also picked up the flute after 6 years of sax and you can make very fast progress. start slow, just blow a note so it feels kind of stable and move to the next. look up the fingerings (they are similar to the sax but not the same!!) and ask another flute player for advice. Try to make as few bad habits as possible. I like it a lot and have a good tone on a very cheap, starter flute. :D Good luck!
Back in the sixties played sax in high school but switch to the flute never regretted it but later switch to the piano and guitar as I'm better at composition which requires harmonic knowledge
Hi Bluesky, Yes, I'll be at the Beaches Jazz Festival in Toronto, July 27, 28 and 29, 7-11 pm. Also at the New Generation Stage at Woodbine Park on Sat. July 21, 2:30 pm.
@cholovilchez Yes Anthony Toth is a great drummer, he's at Berklee now. I broke my wrist when I was 16, had to get really good on the sax fast, cause I couldn't play flute for a while. There's a video of me playing with my cast somewhere on youtube.
i'm luvin the look! and i luv the way u play the flute. i like the style and how u interpret the music ^_^ personal opinion...i like u better on flute..and thats mayb becuz i play flute...
@righteousstrawberrys it seems tedious and tasking at first but the more you practice the easer it becomes to practice because you start to enjoy practicing and you start to enjoy the warm tones you create. People dont lie when they say practicing every day is the key to learning an instrument. I've been playing flute for six years and i can tell you if you practice every day you really advance alot faster then if you dont. If it seems boring and like a chore at first, keep at it
I wish he would stick to more stuff like this. His singing songs are'nt as good. I feel bad saying so, but this is where he has the most talent. If he were to just find a median between this wonderful jazz and his more pop singing songs then tht would be amazing. But he's making the music that speaks to him so I guess I can't complain about his happiness!
Hi Rob, I noticed that it looks like your playing with the head joint further back (or the key joint further forward) than usual... or maybe it's the lighting and I'm just bonkers.
I don't know the name of the song, but the chord progression is the same as "Nice and Juicy". Look it up by Maynard Ferguson, and you'll know what I mean during the solos!
I have played the classical flute since I was 10 years old and really got burnt out on it. Hearing your jazz flute has really re-inspired me to get back in the game and color outside the lines. Thanks!
Damn. Can't get enough of this. He's gorgeous too

Good luck!
Herbie Mann did that transition
Back in the sixties played sax in high school but switch to the flute never regretted it but later switch to the piano and guitar as I'm better at composition which requires harmonic knowledge
Wish I could play that well, I'm considering getting back into Jazz music so I have something to do with my flute and maybe join a little band :P

Yes Anthony Toth is a great drummer, he's at Berklee now. I broke my wrist when I was 16, had to get really good on the sax fast, cause I couldn't play flute for a while. There's a video of me playing with my cast somewhere on youtube.

Dude, I play flute in high school! mind giving me some tips?
@jazzmaster31 thanks a lot!
1:36 did a laser just pass by.
Will you be playing at beaches this year?
@righteousstrawberrys it seems tedious and tasking at first but the more you practice the easer it becomes to practice because you start to enjoy practicing and you start to enjoy the warm tones you create. You play great dude. I play an Indian flute, but this is real different. which flute is this?
Need more jazz in Hawaii that isn't a chronic spot... *sigh*
hay this is fab do you know what key you are in?
i wish i could find a way to learn how to play something like that (do u have sheet music or do u just make it all up?)
@piedenification it isn't apart from Bb, C, and you keep the Eb key down on the flute
Hi Rob, I noticed that it looks like your playing with the head joint further back (or the key joint further forward) than usual... or maybe it's the lighting and I'm just bonkers.
@xroguepassionx Good luck with learning the flute! Have fun!:)
This was great but is it a song or a free play
@yoitsmarilyn Thanks Marilyn!
wooow is that a song or is he improvising?
I don't know the name of the song, but the chord progression is the same as "Nice and Juicy". Look it up by Maynard Ferguson, and you'll know what I mean during the solos!
My hair thanks you! ;)
ARCT Flautist here. Wish I could play jazz. Sad face. : (
sorry, I love jazz, but mostly instrumental jazz. I would need to know how EXACTLY this subtype is called jazz.
Thank you very much!
This was really great but is this a real song or a free play
@TheViestaFox I'm the flute player, name's Rob Christian
Which scale did you use if any?
I wish i could hear that upright bass, looks like hes rippin' it pretty hard
