i feel like redacted is a pretty obvious early version of the mysteryman room. same general shape, both in waterfall, both have "gaster" in them. my personal theory is that redacted was removed for being way too on the nose. there would be absolutely no mystery to mysteryman if he spoke in wingdings, or spat you into the soundtest, or used the theme in the sans grillby date etc. also it being locked behind dogcheck is like, a dead giveaway that its not canon
its such a weird but fulfiling feeling that even for a game 8 years old theres so many new things being discovered, btw the video is really well made :D love it
@@kiekz Nope. The crashes mentioned in the comment are the intentional "crashes" that happens as a part of the story. Those are just the game shutting itself off at a time when you wouldn't think it would, creating the illusion of a crash.
In the video's context of crashes it's talking about the crashes that are not intentional by the developer(s), not to where the game just purposefully closes itself out. Crashes only really happen when there's something wrong in the game's code that causes an error and results in the game being unable to stay open. The times when it's on purpose such as in the omega Flowey scene, are perfectly normal because there's nothing wrong with the game's code to cause it to ACTUALLY stop the game from working properly.
I think "Redacted" was the original design of Gaster, and the stable was the original concept for the Fun Event. Toby has stated that DELTARUNE is based on a fever dream about an ending of a game which (at the time) didn't exist. There's a possibility that Gaster appeared in said dream, and that "Redacted" is a more faithful representation of how Gaster appeared in the fever dream. Over time, Gaster's appearance changed to the "Mystery Man" sprite, and becoming the mysterious yet (seemingly) goofy scientist that we've talked to on Twitter. I mean, you can't tell me that the guy who fell into an alternate universe/his own game, built a giant energy source that has several puzzles, can re-arrange itself, and blasts a banger 24/7 is not at least _somewhat_ of a dork.
I'm completely on board with the idea of Redacted being a scrapped amalgamate. Adding on to your ideas about it, the term "redacted" fits in with the amalgamates and their creepy, mysterious vibe. Similar to the blank names of the memoryheads or the garble of text that shows up when you try attacking some of the amalgamates.
I honestly think that while redacted isn't gaster now thanks to the video, i do think there is still importance to them. Toby knew that people would find this anyway, because it is explicitly redacted. Theory: Gaster was LITERALLY scattered across time and space. More accurately, Undertale. He is scattered across Undertale. Thats why you hear his leitmotif so much. Thats why you can find a lot of Goner NPCs. Thats why Sans and Papyrus showed up.
I personally believe Redacted was just Toby's first attempt at trying to implement something that could be thought to be Gaster himself into the main gameplay, but then scrapped and replaced by Mystery Man.
Redacted being an amalgamate is a possibility that makes a lot of sense honestly, especially some of the amalgamates(mostly the memoryheads) seemingly having refferences to gaster. The attacks that resemble gasters head without cracks, the fact that they seem to be partially made of a gaster blaster, and the whole "calling through the phone" thing. Maybe redacted was planned to be similar to the memoryheads in having refferences to gaster. The memory heads honestly do feel a bit out of place compared to the other amalgamates, especially since we never see them return to their families ...
I don't remember if this was ever proven, but I remember early in the underminers reddit when people put the most effort into researching this stuff. Someone said the "sprite" used for what we refer to as redacted here was a piece of what makes up Muffet's battle sprite. Even if that specifically isn't true, I think at least what it implies is. Redacts was something toby was toying with creating an event for, but at some point didn't like it and cut it. Moved the room to an unused room, hit the flag that makes it unloadable due to dogcheck, and moved on. But the sprite used there likely pointed to a specific place in the array, and rather than do the same he did with the room and just "move" it, he overwrote it. Just continued on from that place in the array. So what we are seeing is the game loading whatever visual data he put in that space. Though with the dimensions the original sprite had, so it doesn't look quite right. That is what I always believed anyway. It always just was a bit clouded by the fact Toby had some intentionally "unfinished" type hidden things he wanted or expected people to find. This one was supposed to NOT be found. And it really wouldn't have been because dogcheck was the way he stopped people trying to find the intentional stuff in the data accidentally finding the actual unfinished cut things. Its just like, SUPER in line with what he was going for with gaster so its easy to think it meant something. I mean hell, it might have even been cut content from trying to implement gaster! Don't really think so though, because of it's development being obviously around the time of the waterfall section and gaster stuff didn't really show up in data files till much later. IMO, with how the animation is identical to Napstablook fading in and out when you approach in the farm, I agree with the other guy in the comments. It might have been an early event based on Mettaton before he was a robot. Would even sort of fit with the development around the time of waterfall stuff because I think Toby intended to go a different direction with mettaton early on (as evidenced by the "you can marry a robot!" claim in the kickstarter never making it into the game)
as a sidenote, I highly believe that redacted is actually the first iteration of the gaster easter egg, being that he has a very similar interaction to the mystery man, just somewhat in reverse, being that he appears as you get closer rather than disappearing once you approach and interact either that, or he might be the the 'original gaster', or the room he was supposed to be encountered in, however due to his shattering this ceased to exist along with himself (this admittedly might be a stretch) also, hot take, what if the other two gaster is referring to in entry 13 is actually two other pieces of himself? WAIT if the stable is a removed object, that implies the redacted sprite that appears in it is a horse, right? what chess piece uses the horse as a symbol representing it? the knight
For the number of times you'd need to play to get the mystery man fun value, it takes 693 times for you to have just barely gotten past 50% chance of getting mystery man at least once, 692 times is less than 50%
A good case for Mysteryman not being Gaster is the fact that we see him at all, since Gaster at that point is completely scattered across time and space. Rather, Mysteryman is the man behind the tree in deltarune, who has many of the same properties such as disappearing and smiling. Mysteryman is related to Gaster obviously (maybe being one of the individuals spoken to by Gaster), but it feels mostly like a red herring to hoodwink us. Also Redacted is probably a test version of Gaster we were never meant to see, which is why all of its text is redacted and speaks in Winddings, Toby just didn't really want us to see or use it as much evidence
I have seen this on another theory about "redacted", although I don't remember which right now, but it does make sense, in my opinion: the "redacted" sprite isn't meant to represent an "amorphous white blob being", but it's literally "redacted", and the white paint stoke is hiding what/who "redacted" is truly supposed to be.
0:49 deltarune site was created 2015, but there was just a black image called ''him'', that if you bright the image, it would appear a message of entry 17 ''this experiment seems very very interesting'', prolly refering to deltarune (you can use wayback machine to check)
my personal theory is that Redacted is a very early test for the fade-out effect that that Gaster uses as well as a Wing-Ding test (maybe Toby wanted to use lower case Wing-Dings as well)
More confirmation : Mysteryman appears on FUN : 66 Every gaster follower only appears in a FUN with 6 Gaster's stats are just a bunch of 6's So therefore, that should mean mysteryman has the STRONGEST association out of all the gaster followers to gaster.
From what I’ve heard, there is actually evidence that the REDACTED sprite used to look different, but Toby drew over it in white at some point, which I find to be pretty interesting if true. iirc the evidence was something along the lines of the file data showing that the sprite was edited at some point.

A lot of the questions that you mentioned at the start are actually answered at the final part of the pacifist route. Asriel said that Chara Climbed the mountain for "not a very happy reason", which i think he's implying that it was to commit suicide. There's a couple more but I can't remember clearly.
I think redacted AND mystery man are gaster, as redacted and gaster talk in wingdings, and in the official tarot card for gaster, its the mystery man. I believe that the mystery man is the main appearance of gaster, and redacted is like his vocal chords or something like that
Unrelated, but: when going against some hard boss, like Jevil, Ceroba, Spamton NEO, TS!Underswap sans, Martlet, or any other hard battle, in life or in games, remember to take breaks I say this mainly because, I remember struggling to Jevil, almost beating it after trying almost the whole night, and next day winning first try, same for Spamtom NEO lol, for TS!Sans it was a shorter time gap, but still worked, breaks can really make a difference!
Perhaps Redacted is a proto-version of what Dess has become in Deltarune. Another character who's fallen into the Code, Gaster currently being the most knowledgeable of how to express himself in this state Also, I love the idea of Toby giggling to himself naming the Gaster Sprite "Mystery Man" knowing full well everyone will figure out who it is

I don’t know why we’re still questioning who this Mystery Man is. Here people, this is a patch note from Toby fox himself in version v1.001 - Removed the "Fun" value in favor of a "fun" value, which essentially means that the value no longer needs to be modified to find W. D. Gaster and other related "fun" events.
I posted this on HalfBreadChaos' original Redacted video when it came out, but it's relevant here as well so I thought I'd repost it: It's kind of hard to pin down exactly what this is. It could just be unused code which Toby tried to get rid of but accidentally made seem really creepy. My best guess is you would have entered the stable from the farm, then you would have been brought to redacted's room, which probably would have been decorated to look like a stable or something. The redacted NPC probably would have been just a minor character with some silly dialogue or an item or something. Maybe it was going to be another one of Napstablook's family members considering it has the same ghost property as Napstablook. Perhaps it was meant to be the main focus of the snail farm instead of Thundersnail. Based on the fact that the stable room isn't decorated at all, and that the stable itself uses an obvious placeholder sprite in the same style as the game's other placeholders, I'm guessing it was cut pretty early in its development. Maybe Toby didn't want to completely remove it in case it'd break something, so he just redacted it, thinking it would end up being less creepy than it ended up being. We don't really have enough clues to proceed here. I kind of doubt it really has that much significance though, and it's probably not Gaster.

And yes, he said he was holding a PIECE of him. Which could mean the others, mystery man and redacted, could also be pieces.

About Mystery Man being Gaster: I'm confident that that is true, however what you used to prove that (safe for the 66 value) was strong evidence toward the idea that Mystery Man is a Gaster Follower and not necessarily Gaster himself. The difference being that no one who says that Mystery Man isn't Gaster is arguing that he's "a random NPC unrelated to Gaster" like you suggested, but rather that his significance and connection to Gaster isn't necessarily "one in the same", which you failed to disprove (even if I agree with you on the conclusion)

Completely baseless theory: Redacted is December Holiday, who also fell out of time and space in a similar manner to Gaster. Since the story of Deltarune predates Undertale according to Toby Fox, I wouldn't be surprised. Of course, such a revelation would likely be a posthumous change. "Hey this old unused thing could work for this"

Even if Chara is the narrator, I believe Frisk to be the one in charge of _which_ ACTs show up in the actual battles. If so, why is it that Frisk's go-to conflict resolution strategy is flirting? _With adults?_ This is age-inappropriate behavior. Someone has to have exposed them to this kind of behavior, or if not, at _least_ nobody paid enough attention to them to keep them out of such things or explain them in an age-appropriate manner. Like... I'm not saying someone was grooming Frisk, but I'm not _not_ saying it either.

I think that Redacted is called Redacted for a reason, that being because it was completely scrapped from the game and "redacted". There's no bizarre lore connection, it's just a scrapped Gaster draft.

Personally i remember being on this era i headcanoned super hard back in the early days that Redacted was somehow Gaster's wife who suffered an even worse fate and was his motivation to research spacetime and such and ended up like him
But after that phase i too thought there was no way Redacted was Gaster, i felt like the dogcheck was a clear enough game statement on what is meant to be found by players and what isn't
Theory: Gaster was LITERALLY scattered across time and space. More accurately, Undertale. He is scattered across Undertale. Thats why you hear his leitmotif so much. Thats why you can find a lot of Goner NPCs. Thats why Sans and Papyrus showed up.
I personally believe Redacted was just Toby's first attempt at trying to implement something that could be thought to be Gaster himself into the main gameplay, but then scrapped and replaced by Mystery Man.
Redacted being an amalgamate is a possibility that makes a lot of sense honestly, especially some of the amalgamates(mostly the memoryheads) seemingly having refferences to gaster. The attacks that resemble gasters head without cracks, the fact that they seem to be partially made of a gaster blaster, and the whole "calling through the phone" thing. Maybe redacted was planned to be similar to the memoryheads in having refferences to gaster. The memory heads honestly do feel a bit out of place compared to the other amalgamates, especially since we never see them return to their families ...
What if a gaster piece is the thing redacted is merged with? Because they speak in windings so I think that explains it
I don't remember if this was ever proven, but I remember early in the underminers reddit when people put the most effort into researching this stuff. Someone said the "sprite" used for what we refer to as redacted here was a piece of what makes up Muffet's battle sprite.
Even if that specifically isn't true, I think at least what it implies is. Redacts was something toby was toying with creating an event for, but at some point didn't like it and cut it. Moved the room to an unused room, hit the flag that makes it unloadable due to dogcheck, and moved on. But the sprite used there likely pointed to a specific place in the array, and rather than do the same he did with the room and just "move" it, he overwrote it. Just continued on from that place in the array. So what we are seeing is the game loading whatever visual data he put in that space. Though with the dimensions the original sprite had, so it doesn't look quite right.
That is what I always believed anyway. It always just was a bit clouded by the fact Toby had some intentionally "unfinished" type hidden things he wanted or expected people to find. This one was supposed to NOT be found. And it really wouldn't have been because dogcheck was the way he stopped people trying to find the intentional stuff in the data accidentally finding the actual unfinished cut things.
Its just like, SUPER in line with what he was going for with gaster so its easy to think it meant something. I mean hell, it might have even been cut content from trying to implement gaster! Don't really think so though, because of it's development being obviously around the time of the waterfall section and gaster stuff didn't really show up in data files till much later.
IMO, with how the animation is identical to Napstablook fading in and out when you approach in the farm, I agree with the other guy in the comments. It might have been an early event based on Mettaton before he was a robot. Would even sort of fit with the development around the time of waterfall stuff because I think Toby intended to go a different direction with mettaton early on (as evidenced by the "you can marry a robot!" claim in the kickstarter never making it into the game)
as a sidenote, I highly believe that redacted is actually the first iteration of the
gaster easter egg, being that he has a very similar interaction to the mystery man,
just somewhat in reverse, being that he appears as you get closer rather than disappearing
once you approach and interact

be encountered in, however due to his shattering this ceased to exist along with himself

For the number of times you'd need to play to get the mystery man fun value, it takes 693 times for you to have just barely gotten past 50% chance of getting mystery man at least once, 692 times is less than 50%
A good case for Mysteryman not being Gaster is the fact that we see him at all, since Gaster at that point is completely scattered across time and space. Rather, Mysteryman is the man behind the tree in deltarune, who has many of the same properties such as disappearing and smiling. Mysteryman is related to Gaster obviously (maybe being one of the individuals spoken to by Gaster), but it feels mostly like a red herring to hoodwink us.
Also Redacted is probably a test version of Gaster we were never meant to see, which is why all of its text is redacted and speaks in Winddings, Toby just didn't really want us to see or use it as much evidence
I have seen this on another theory about "redacted", although I don't remember which right now, but it does make sense, in my opinion: the "redacted" sprite isn't meant to represent an "amorphous white blob being", but it's literally "redacted", and the white paint stoke is hiding what/who "redacted" is truly supposed to be.

From what I’ve heard, there is actually evidence that the REDACTED sprite used to look different, but Toby drew over it in white at some point, which I find to be pretty interesting if true. iirc the evidence was something along the lines of the file data showing that the sprite was edited at some point.

I posted this on HalfBreadChaos' original Redacted video when it came out, but it's relevant here as well so I thought I'd repost it:
It's kind of hard to pin down exactly what this is. It could just be unused code which Toby tried to get rid of but accidentally made seem really creepy. My best guess is you would have entered the stable from the farm, then you would have been brought to redacted's room, which probably would have been decorated to look like a stable or something. The redacted NPC probably would have been just a minor character with some silly dialogue or an item or something. Maybe it was going to be another one of Napstablook's family members considering it has the same ghost property as Napstablook. Perhaps it was meant to be the main focus of the snail farm instead of Thundersnail. Based on the fact that the stable room isn't decorated at all, and that the stable itself uses an obvious placeholder sprite in the same style as the game's other placeholders, I'm guessing it was cut pretty early in its development. Maybe Toby didn't want to completely remove it in case it'd break something, so he just redacted it, thinking it would end up being less creepy than it ended up being. We don't really have enough clues to proceed here. I kind of doubt it really has that much significance though, and it's probably not Gaster.

And yes, he said he was holding a PIECE of him. Which could mean the others, mystery man and redacted, could also be pieces.

About Mystery Man being Gaster: I'm confident that that is true, however what you used to prove that (safe for the 66 value) was strong evidence toward the idea that Mystery Man is a Gaster Follower and not necessarily Gaster himself.
The difference being that no one who says that Mystery Man isn't Gaster is arguing that he's "a random NPC unrelated to Gaster" like you suggested, but rather that his significance and connection to Gaster isn't necessarily "one in the same", which you failed to disprove (even if I agree with you on the conclusion)
