I actually find this droning music that plays in most of the stages to be enjoyable. The Genny definitely made some wonderful renditions of arcade classics, this somehow is no exception.
I remember I played this game on my Sega Genesis. Man it was so difficult to finish games in those times. Literally you had to memorize every encounter and once you surpassed a boss you were stuck with, you could advance a little bit more before getting stuck. For me the hardest level was the icy one.
One thing this game did that so many didn't, is actually add more / different enemies on harder settings. A lot of games still do this day, just have the same enemies on all difficulty levels, but just increase their tankiness / firepower. More interesting this way as each difficulty level is a different experience. This was too hard without cheats though on the hardest setting!
Ah, never had Toki so didn't know that! Kirby's Dreamland 1 does a similar thing though! It's rare because it's more effort, having enemies exclusive to higher difficulties, but it shows passion for the game.

Driver on PS1 final mission "presidents run" even with cheats it's near impossible because if the cops flip your car over its mission failure. or if your car takes enough damage it's a mission failure. So even if you have an invincible car or unlimited time or turn the cars into tiny micro machines it's still near impossible 😂

I actually prefer this over even the HD version, there's something about the droning but driving soundtrack that the Genny brings out, always appreciated the grittiness of its soundchip. If the HD version were based off this and had this arrangement of the soundtrack as an option, I would have bought it day one.
Used to play this as a kid back on the mega drive now I'm enjoying it again via emulator. Theres something so charming and mysterious about the 16 bit art style and backgrounds

Can't understand why the Megadrive version could not of gone the arcade route?! Every other version did?! Including the surprising NES version well!!! It was a claim that everything on offer here was an "improvement"?! Feels more like a demake than anything else but still if this version of Toki did go the arcade route with the way it looks with it's drab and washed out colors I doubt it would've been any better though and where's the gridiron power up?!...Imagine if Toki ever got a release on the SNES back at that time?!..

@@pmeister2462 , well when you consider that back in the late 80's to early 90's the Megadrive was kinda an arcade-like home console system?! It really didn't make any sense at all back...Maybe the SNES dodged a conversion bullet?! But I'm via the console wars of the 90's a fair good rendition of TOKI would've helped the sales of any console regardless who got it ( just like the Amiga/Atari ST?!). I mean now sure there's that version out on Steam which is fine but I'm not to convinced by it's redrawn sprite work etc. Maybe it's just me cheers.
@@TheAxelay it could also be that by the time the SNES came out Toki kinda died off a bit in popularity "in 92-93 I dreamt of owning a Toki arcade cabinet" I knew since the SNES had a higher color palette capacity compared to Genesis that a SNES version of Toki would be much closer to the Arcade version. The new game is great I only wish that those graphics existed when I was a kid lol!

This game freaked me oooouuut as a kid.
That intro was so intense and harrowing.
Loved it.
Hardest was a fucking nightmare to play in this game, but being able to set getting extra lives every 7000 points made victory almost an invetability.

Now that you mention it, the last level sure does look a lot like the city of Dis from Dante Alighieri La Divina Commedia.
