  • Paul-Gordon Chandler takes the listener on a fascinating journey through the all-embracing spirituality of Kahlil Gibran, the early 20th century Lebanese-American poet artist and mystic, author of the bestselling book The Prophet. He explores how Kahlil Gibran, a supreme East-West figure, can be a much-needed guide for our time, related to peace, harmony and building bridges between the creeds of the Middle East and West.

The prophet was one of a handful of books I was raised with as a child. Jonathan Livingston seagull one of the others. Both speak to personal responsibility and individual sovereignty. It is no wonder he was hushed in his time. We need more voices such as his to navigate out of the trap our forefathers set for us all.
Truly profound - I’m glad to have found you.

Excellent presentation and a helpful window on a figure whose writing has been like a constant but quiet presence in my life since an elder cousin gave me a copy of the Prophet when I was a young teenager. Thank you again ❤

Thank you for your presentation, I do appreciate it. I was brought up Christian but I am not sure if I can forgive the Christian Church or how the interpretate the story of Christ. I consider myself quite spiritual all my life and since I was born. I always thought that mankind is greater than that they are shown to be. I am now 70 years of age. I agree with Kahlil and I am so grateful for his beautiful insight.

In 63 BC, Cicero said in a speech, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather, what you can do for your country.” So much for plagiarism : )

When he wrote the Prophet he was still learning proper English. I think Mary Haskell who re-wrote everything he presented to her should have been named the co-author of the Prophet (for all it is worth) as well as everything he wrote in English. "Editing" his writings was so intensive a one-page poem had seven pages of suggestions and corrections all done by Mary Haskell. Compare his first poem in English "the Madman" with "the Prophet" and you will see the difference. The poor woman wasted 20 years of her life supporting him and ended up married to a 75 years old man from Savannah Georgia after years of financial (Kahlil rarely worked in his whole life), educational, editorial, and intellectual support of Kahlil. She is now a footnote in Kahlil's biography.

I think your comment is exaggerated. However, many women have been the backbone of genius men, many have been forgotten, many lived on as a shadow of the man they backed.
Who would Chopin be without George Sand? Who would the great painter Tintoretto be without his fine daughter who painted the better parts of his works.
It is the way of the world. I have a composer brother-in-law whose wife, a great intellectual, has been his backbone, willingly, lovingly;it’s a choice that women make. It does not demean the woman, or the genius she chooses to back.

@@nellylama976 I am assuming you sister did not correct your brother in law's music. She may have been by his side with love and tender living care. That's different. She should get equal credit for the Prophet and her name as co-author should be on any new version of the book. It is a shame that Kahlil claimed all the credit to himself.

I have translated websites for artists from Dutch to English. Because I am a writer also I could get very close to these artist and give a good translation, not losing the meaning of their work. It was quite an experience to become almost one with the work and feelings envolved. It was an honour for me to represent their work. Becoming one with the other which I believe Gibran meant is the beauty of his work. I think it is absurd to think the Mary Haskell wasted 20 years of her life. I love her for making such offers in her life not so much for Gibran but for us.

@@marymcmullen5150 There is a difference between editing and re-writing. She rewrote his stuff. He wrote in English. She did not translate hie writings, she re-wrote them. She was the ghost writer?

I think a ghost writer is something different. However I do think she could have got more recognition as Wordsworth's sister should have for writing down all his work from his notes, which would have been selected by Wordsworth himself. When I wrote in Dutch I got help too and all that was written were my thoughts.
