The running costs are massive though, 15 mpg if you're lucky for starters. If that's not a problem to you then I agree, but the XJ6 4.2 gives you most of the same performance as the V12 (though maybe slightly noisier) and is cheaper to run.

My first jag was xj12. I was 20. Finest production saloon car in its day. Quiet fast and luxurious. Had 4 v12 jags now. Nothing comes close to the superb v12.

Less mockery please chaps, that was the finest saloon car money could buy in its day. So good in fact that they were still building the V12 in Series III form in 1992 and finding buyers. With a little TLC I would be glad to swank around in that, sable brown or no.

@@cmddelete2169 For 1972 (which was about when this one was made), it didn't have much competition apart from the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, the Mercedes-Benz S-class and the Jensen Interceptor and it was considerably cheaper than all of those.

If the grandson is "Charlie," he might be the wrong choice for a family spokesman when it comes to cars. Cranking the starter as long as he did at the end of the video is a great way to fry the windings in the starter motor. Also, regarding the question about a noise when he slammed the door at the end there, there are two air-pressure relief "valves" (flappers) that release the cabin pressure into the trunk (boot) when the doors are closed. You can hear them make a bit of a noise as the door closes.
We had an '86 Series III 4.2 Liter 6 cylinder for about 12 years. It was a beautiful car inside and out, black inside & out with polished alloy wheels. The previous owner had taken excellent care of it and my wife loved her 10th Anniversary present.
I hope this wonderful, rare and incredibly original classic one day finds an owner that cares and understands.

Got to ride in one of these once, I was really impressed by how wonderful the suspension was and it was whisper quiet even when accelerating to very high speeds. Truly a luxury ride.

A dream car of mine. I have had a couple of S1 XJ6's. I did find an XJ12 but it was horrible so I didn't buy it.
When this car was released in the summer of 1972, there was a 2 year waiting list, which at the time was slightly longer than that for the XJ6. The idea of introducing the motoring public to the delights of 12 cylinder cars was significant. It is sad that both these presenters are so laughingly dismissive of what is actually an important part of British motoring history and also dismissive what is in reality a very beautiful car.
It was also arguably the best car in the world back in the '70s.
Love these old Jags, the mk 2, the mk x and these xj's. Made when cars were mechanical devices and not electrical appliances.
One day I'll buy one of those and put it in the middle of my living room just to look at it.

It was like putting a fine Pearl Necklace on a Pig & watching it roll around in the mud, before the other Swines in the sty rip it off its neck & start chomping away on the Pearls cos they think they look good enough to eat!!! There are so many good videos on these great cars & their fabulous engines & incomparable ride quality on RUclips, but this clearly wasn’t one of them!!! Who treats their late grandfather’s prize possession as if it were a piece of rusty old metal that’s no use to anybody at the bottom of grandad’s back junkyard…? I had a Series III Daimler Double-Six Vanden Plas with the redesigned High-Efficiency Combustion Chambers that reduced the engine’s fuel consumption by 25% without any drop in its maximum Power & Torque Output, which by the time the Series III succeeded & superseded this Series II model was generating a much higher 300BHP @ 5,200 RPM & 318ft 7:09 -lbs of crankshaft-turning force at 3,000 RPM, & with 75% of that readily available from just 2,000 RPM! And did so with such refinement & panache, in what was officially the world’s quietest engine until the end of its production run in 1992. These Clowns obviously know nothing about the history & development of Automatic Transmissions, but even by the first Automatic Gearbox in the world didn’t come out until the early 1980’s, which in the Mercedes-Benz 500SEL/500SEC’s 5.0 Litre V8 engine with a Maximum Power Output 231BHP only made use of the 1st & Lowest of 4 Gears under Full-Throttle Acceleration Kickdown conditions, meaning that it was essentially a 3-Speed Auto Gearbox under most driving conditions. The gearbox this car was the venerable GM400 Auto-Box, which was chosen bcos it was the only Automatic Gearbox that could handle the XJ12 & XJS’ 300 horses & 318 ft-lbs of torque at the time this car came out, & for at least the following 10-15 years. Which is why it was also fitted to the 200MPH Vector W2 Twin Turbo 800BHP producing 7-Litre V8 Twin-Turbocharged Engine!!! And as for their lack of knowledge of what a Choke Button is for, that in the case of this particular car which hadn’t been driven for ages, took them 52 seconds to start up, by the time the Series IiI came out fitted with an Automatic Choke (so no need for a Choke Button) would make the engine in my car come alive in a matter of a few seconds even in the coldest & wettest conditions, even after I’d left iI’d left mine without turning its engine over for a whole year!!! And as for the notion that “sometimes when you floor the throttle nothing happens”, they should try giving the car its long-overdue service to see what it’s capable of when in it’s not all clogged up with oil that’s years past its use-by date, bcos when I use to floor the accelerator pedal in my Jag at around 30MPH, there wasn’t a car on the road that I ever came across that could outaccelerate it!!! It was more like a Kick in your Back than a kickdown, & could even outperform my much smaller Renault 5 GT Turbo when its Turbocharger finally kicked in & sent the small car flying!!! Finally, as far as the headrests on the front seats that they describe as useless, that’s the way all Luxury & Sport Cars that even had any looked like, bcos their purpose is to stop you from breaking your neck in a hard crash as you bounce back, as well as stopping the rear seat passengers from flying forward & breaking your neck in the opposite direction with the force of a charging elephant!!! Besides, I’d be very surprised if their car’s headrests couldn’t be quickly & easily adjusted up & down for height. Show me another 4-Door Luxury of Sporty Saloon that could easily exceed 150MPH despite its 3-Gear Auto Gearbox in the 1970’s & 1980’s, & I’d be Amayonaised, cos as far as I know there simply weren’t any around in those halcyon days. The only slightly lighter XJS Coupe could easily reach 155MPH. No BMW or Mercedes-Benz could do much more than 140MPH even long into the 1980’s… And neither could they match its acceleration, despite their late 80’s 4-Speed Electronic Auto Boxes with the option to select “Sports” Driving Mode on them. So WTF are these fools laughing at…???
Slow starting and sluggish until warn, because carburetors. When that appeared on the market it was the most amazing car this side of a MB 300SE 6.3. Please let Henry do a full test. Perhaps have the suspension checked out first though. I am envious.
If I may ask, what made you mention checking the suspension? Did you spot something in the video?
@@b_mb4948 Just that it was mentioned that the car rolled a lot. The dampers may be weak or the bushings could be worn due to age. It's no sports car but they did handle quite well. May be worth a look.
A wonderful unrestored example though.
Octane compared the two cars and preferred the XJ12 (well, Daimler Double Six as there's was).
@@varsas10 The Jag is certainly the better luxury saloon. The Merc was more of a hot rod. Both very good in their own way though.

I put one of those engines into a Dax Tojeiro Cobra replica many years ago, tuned up to 350 bhp and capable of 500 bhp quite easily. Huge amounts of torque. A disappointing video - I expected something different from the title but instead got two lads giggling and being dismissive about an interesting car that needs some TLC.

I don't get why they are making fun of the "sable brown" color. That non-metallic color is coming back. It was, and still is, an awesome color.
Jaguar in them days’ The car was flashy enough for the customers !. customers would not want to be sticking out in the crowd that much ! So customers could pick the colour !

It sounds like it's not firing on all twelve when you start it. I suppose that could be down to flooding because you help the starter for so long. Those 5.3 litre V12s (or at least the ones I've encountered) have been fairly prone to flooding on startup, especially when the operator possess little finesse or when the cars are not used enough. The Stromberg CD (150 or 175 I can't remember) don't respond well to sitting for long periods, especially if the fuel being used has a more than 5 percent ethanol content, at best. If you had any class or taste you would understand that the charm of the car is not in the performance (although it was superior to most cars of it's price bracket when it was new) or the statistics, it's the fact that it is just a fantastic, comfortable, stylish, quiet and ver competent motor car. Besides, the torque delivery from the 5.3 V12s, even the carburetted ones, is something totally unique to the car, it's simply fantastic. You two need to grow up and stop hating on a fantastic car just because it is older than your Jap Crap.
I like Carfection, I like it a lot, the quality of this offering was so below par that I thought I had be redirected to the idiot zone. The XJ might not be perfect but it has class, style and enough performance to still excite today. the coupe even more so. I had a 2.8 swb with a plastic interior {Jaguar called it something else but it was plastic} went on too two more both 4.2s, fitted them with early aftermarket electronic ignition never a problem, did 50000 in one 42000 in the other and felt pretty special on each journey never a complaint from a passenger and the performance always made me smile, lets hope this offering from Carfection is not going to be the stuff of things to come, Petrolicious has also turned out some below par stuff lately so don't bother watching them anymore.
These two have not got a clue, that three speed auto was beautiful silky smooth gear change they forget bhp is not speed the torque from this engine was great. That made it move

Such an elegant car , especially from the front , hard to believe it was the finest car on the road when it was first released back in 1968 and the style stayed much the same for 40 years , there are so few series 1's left , it doesn't help that they are popular for banger racing !.
Finally! A Sable-colored Jag! My 1970 Series 2 XK-E was Sable, and it was gorgeous. Not in a flashy way, but quite the opposite. It was the ultimate sleeper, non-descript in appearance until you took a second look, and then, wow!

Series 1 XJ12s are tricky to find these days as there so little left on the road but I wouldn’t say it’s out of reach. When they do pop up they’re not too expensive. It’s the constant maintenance that’ll burn a hole in your pocket. Sorry you didn’t like the video.
Charlie B Rose What constant maintenance? If it was a Ferrari would you take it to a back street garage? I bet this beauty hasn’t only had V12 specialists working on it. If treated properly the engine will run like a dream. They require no more maintenance than any other car, they’re just fussy as to who they like working on them..

Never run a starter for that long. 15 seconds max I'd say, then leave 20 seconds, then try again. Interesting classic video other than that bit making me wince with mechanical sympathy
I see so much of the 2010-2019 XJ in this one. The lines, tail lights, grille, bonnet, stance.
These kids showed this car absolutely no respect. Just a lot of joking around. They could have done better. Didn't appreciate this video at all. It's such an icon.

for your benefit... and my experience of getting a v12 xjs running. Your symptom is what I now understand to be a classic "crap in the fuel tank problem. The tanks on the xj saloons are a bit of a pain to remove ... but they need removing and cleaning of all the old fuel that will have collected in them. I used electrloysis to clean my tank up. Then the fuel lines want blasting and cleaning through, a new filter and probably the carburettors cleaning (I think this will have carbs). The fuel lines in the engine bay will need replacing because when you do get it doing they will likely perish and leak. I would put a tenner that this will solve the running problem and hey presto you will then find the real enthusiasm for this v12... it is super smooth and very very impressive on the road.
When was it last used? Does it have electric or mechanical fuel pump? As fuel can drain back to the tank and make it harder to start, as the mechanical pump is slow to draw fuel from the tank. Fuel Injected models don't have that problem as the electric pump supplies the fuel almost instantly. Did you pull out the choke?
I think they used SU electric pumps and it is a good idea to wait a few seconds with ignition on, before flicking the starter. Especially if not started in a while. Also those Stromberg carbs have rubber diaphragms at top of piston that deteriorate, causing poor running. Cheap and easy to replace, but not something young enthusiasts would likely be aware of. Plus of course, check dashpot oil on each carb and that piston moves smoothly through it's stroke.
@@matthewjenkins1161 I had a Series 1 1973 XJ 12 . SU (Skinners Union) twin fuel pumps in the back - one for each tank . The Zenith - Stromberg carburettors were a constant headache though with the dashpots always leaking and the piston would not move up & down smoothly - Webbers were the way to go for much better performance and less faulty operation . Fuel injection for Series 2 ('74 - '79) and beyond and most of the fuel problems went away (no more choke , slow start-ups to idle , etc.)
Australia's most prized muscle car in the Ford Falcon GTHO Phase 3 of 1971 actually held the title of 'Fastest four door sedan in the world' but only Aussies and Kiwis have heard of them. It would out drag the Jaguar XJ12 down the quarter mile but top speed was a similar 140mph. A Phase 3 can change hands in Australia for A$1,000,000 today, probably 40 times as much as an XJ12 would sell for here. Not at all having a go at the Jaguar XJ12, absolutely love Jaguars, very beautiful machines.
Absolutely brutal. Made it through a minute 34 before throwing in the towel. Nice car though.
At the very end, the noise coming from the boot area/rear windscreen when the door was slammed is called "the cowbell" and it's just something old XJ sedans do -- under the rear parcel shelf is an air extraction box with metal flaps in it that had foam insulation that's probably disintegrated from age allowing metal to metal contact now. When you slam the door the air pressure spike makes the metal flaps pop up and then clatter back into place and make that cowbell noise. It's "fixable" but the amount of disassembly (taking out rear seat, insulation panels, working around the sunroof cables/motor, etc) is not worth it just to avoid a little tinkle-tinkle noise when you shut the door.

Very nice XJ. The series 1 is my favourite... Same colour as Sir William Lyons' personal XJ6, too! Everyone loves the MGBs and E-Types, but not many people seen quite so enthusiastic about the old XJ, pity.
As someone else in the comments mentioned, I would also love to see Henry's take on it at some point!

Interesting the pre-HE v12 had a red line approaching 6750rpm. The HE I think redlined before 6000. It's amazing it's still in such good condition 48 years on considering your (lack of) interest in it! Hard to believe but it was at the time the fastest 4 door saloon in the world with people clocking 130-140mph average speeds across europe in it (doing sub 10mpg in the process). This was only 5 years after it was a big deal doing those speeds in a Lamboghini Miura that cost over 5 times as much.
One of the most legendary car designes EVER, and with the amazing V12 (not running on all by far though)

If I remember correctly, they took a whole lot of cars to a test track in Italy with banked corners and it still was the fastest standard four door saloon in 1983! The only competitor was the Quatroporte but in true Italian fashion it threw a belt and that was that. The guy that drove the Mk.III HE claimed it was purring along nicely like it could do it all day. No drama at 245 kmph.
