    A bud and I hitchhiked down to LA from Calgary and, wandering around the Chinese Theatre, were offered tickets to see a live taping of this show. We took a few buses to get to the studio. The staff there were great, stashing our backpacks in a storage room while we watched. We laughed our asses off for two tapings, including the pre-show warm-up comic...yeah, baby, '70s bonkersness in its purest form. Then we went and found a park to roll-out our sleeping bags. LA then was friendly, weird and laid back.

    For those who are wondering who the guy is that Chuck dedicated this episode to, I'll tell you. Rogie Vachon was a goaltender in the National Hockey League. He played for the Montreal Canadiens (1966-1971), Los Angeles Kings (1971-1978), Detroit Red Wings (1978-1980), and Boston Bruins (1980-1982). He was only just inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016. This is probably because he played for the Kings at a time when they were far away from pretty much the majority of the teams in the NHL at the time, and it took him a while to get the recognition he deserved.

      He must have been a big hockey fan cause he was wearing a New York Islanders helmet for a little bit there too, 😊

    • @bluebear1985
      @bluebear1985 8 месяцев назад +1

      @KristianWontroba I think I noticed that in a couple of episodes. The Islanders were still fairly new at the time, but they were starting to find some success already. It would take them until the start of the following decade to go all the way though. 🙂

      It was brought back during the summers of 2017 and 2018 on ABC. The host was " unknown British comedian" Tommy Maitland (really Mike Myers in disguise). It was an okay revival, but nothing that could really be called spectacular.

    This is NOT the first episode! Chuck Barris was in a full tux, stiff, and a nervous wreck on the first show, as he was the creator-producer and a last minute replacement for the originally-selected host, John Barbour ...
    An established game show producer (The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game), Barris was originally the show's co-producer but not its host. He was an emergency replacement host for eventual Real People host John Barbour, who had objected to the show's satirical concept and tried to adopt more of a traditional amateur-hour format.

      @@mcgannahanskyjellyfetti6854 In one case, it was a Friday show and Chuckie got to award a "Worst Act of the Week" check and dirty sock (which happened to be from that episode). He stood alone on stage and calmly said, "There is no winner. I just saved $516.32! Yahoo!" Then Jerry Maren (the Munchkin) threw a ton of confetti on him, much to Chuckie's chagrin. :)
      In the other case, it was the final week, and Chuckie said "We are so happy, because we don't have a winner," at which point a bunch of the performers (which included some acts who were brought back for the final week) playfully tried to grab the check while Chuckie held on for dear life.

    …I’m still looking for the show that had a guy in a really nice harlequin costume - he was carrying a mandolin and wearing a harmonica on a rack
    he began to play Leon Russell’s excellent song: ‘This Masquerade’ - a song *superbly• covered by Karen Carpenter in the early 70s
    so, the harlequin began playing the song - sounding better and better by the minute - culminating in some amazing runs on his mandolin - and beautifully accompanied by his harmonica..!
    I wish I could find that performance!!!

      That's what was so good about it. It was actually a parody of amateur talent shows that had already been part of radio and TV for years. When this show started, the host they had was taking it too seriously, so NBC told executive producer Chuck Barris that they'd only take the show if he were to host it himself. The result was an insane show that was pretty risqué for daytime TV at the time.
