How does an actor get into the psychology of their character?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are joined by a very special guest, Karen Gillan, to talk about her illustrious career and her approach to acting and filmmaking. They take a look at some of Karen’s iconic roles and some-lesser known: Doctor Who, Oculus, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and The Party's Just Beginning. They talk about perspective taking in acting and the ultimate reason people choose to act. Karen shares her empathetic approach to understanding her characters and why acting is like tennis. It’s a great metaphor!

Congratulations you guys are going hi
If ask for anything in return for goodness you don't goodness but doesn't asking in the first place .also mean lack of goodness
I've heard being stereotypical nice guy . Who wants appreciation for being Nice. But Hal didn't do much before he knew his place before getting buffed up. He seems more the loser incels who get on steroids and become The Jock bullies themselves.
Mega mind could also be used by the right as a case. Slave morality over the lefts some how making it nice guy syndrome
It finally completed: ruclips.net/video/GBt6oYfkB5o/видео.html
I'm currently in a place where depression and chronic pain have been keeping me from doing much of anything, and am just lucky enough to have a family that wants every kid to live at home so they can save up for a house.
But while being unemployed for quite a few months after a back surgery, I've completely realized I want to tell stories, preferably as a writer. Movies, TV, Comics, Games, anything like that (writing actual novels is something I really want to do, but I'm just not on that level of ability yet, and sort of feel like it'd work best if I co-authored with someone who I could bounce ideas off of and have them tell me I need to write).
Where do you even start with this stuff when you're 30, don't have any backup plans besides getting whatever entry-level job is available, and hadn't made anything before? Because I feel like I could write some good films or graphic novels, but where do you go to learn about the industry and apply for jobs. If it helps, I am actually a short commute from NYC.
Do I just go to places I'd want to work and hand out resumes and portfolios of scenes I'd written?
YOU GUYS GOT KAREN ON OMG IM TOTALLY WATCHING
My exact reaction, holy crap guys!
No seriously, I haven’t really truly known anyone up to this point, I LOVE THIS!!!!
Omg same! I heard her voice and I wanted to scream! I love Karen so much!!! I watched her as Amy Pond as a kid and it’s been so wonderful to see her in other roles too!!!
Well do it and quit broadcasting it to everybody...
@@gateauxq4604😅😅😊😊😊😊😅😅ij
I met Karen at a con when I was younger. I was dressed as pinkie pie and she said I was a pretty pink angel. I will never forget that.
Pinkie Pie for the win!
When I learned Karen was Nebula; I was mind blown. All I could picture was Amy, the girl who waited. Crazy range-love this actress
SAME
Right! I saw her bald online and found out then that she did it to help play Nebula! My jaw dropped! Dedication!
Amy Pond 🫠
AND she shaved her head for it... I was in awe that she did.
When she said "Acting is reacting" it reminded me of what Matt LeBlanc said as Joey Tribbiani in the TV show FRIENDS in a special episode where Joey is teaching an acting class and he says "Acting is reacting... this does not mean 'Acting again'."
Hahaha 😂
100% thought that immediately 😄
Haha. I thought of The Good Place, Vicki. Something like, "Acting, is just reacting. And reacting is just preacting. And preacting. Well that's just being." Pretentious gibberish basically.
I thought acting was pissing yourself (laughin'), like life, tryin' to find a way!
Nebula is one of the MCU's most underrated characters, and has one of the top 5 character arcs, IMO. Props to the writing of her character, but most of the credit goes to Karen.
Agreed, she nails it!
100% agree!
Agreed, Nebula is one of my favorite characters!
Yes!! I could be wrong, but I feel like Nebula is one of the few, at least the one I remember, that actually decided to change and not just responded to the things that happened and then realized was different
You guys are actually making it...
You're making your way to Hollywood...
Not a good thing unless they don’t BECOME A PART of Hollywood…if you know what I mean
They really are, and I’m happy for them!
Karen Gillan is one of my favorite actors, this is an amazing guest!! The internet dads are really going places!
Sameeee
Gotta put “the best internet dads” on their tombstones.
I am so pleased by Karen's success. She has earned her place in the industry through grit and hard work.
"Vincent and the Doctor" is an average to good _Doctor Who_ episode until that ending and then it just breaks your fucking heart but also gives you hope. And Gillan makes that. THE ULTIMATE GINGER!!!!
So truee
That episode is everything
When I want a really good cry, I go straight for that episode, that scene in the museum absolutely destroys me in all the right and necessary ways.
She was my favorite companion, and I'm not sure how much was the writing and how much is because she's just so amazing
1000%!!! It was so special
I remember watching her behind-the-scenes video for Guardians Vol. 3 and having my jaw drop when I heard what she actually sounds like. Pair that with a fun, self-aware personality, and you have a recipe for success. For once, it's nice to have a Karen in Hollywood who is a total sweetheart.
Well said!
@@CinemaTherapyShow Thank you!
So delighted that you got Karen on this show. I'd seen her in a few episodes of "Doctor Who", but she really impressed me in "Welcome to the Jungle", where she subverted her usual action girl roles by playing a shy bookworm who has to portray a Lara Croft character. Also, her American accent is so convincing, that it's surprising to hear her real Scottish voice.
Doctor who really is the best therapy for me. And I turned 12 when Karen and Matt joined the show, so their era got me through some awful times being queer and autistic throughout secondary/high school... an all-boys secondary school 🙃 the whole show has been my lifeline tbh. But yeah, I couldn't be more grateful for that entire era especially Karen, Matt and Arthur. Love Karen in everything she does. 😊 can't wait to watch this
I discovered Doctor Who when I was recovering from severe bullying in my previous school when I was 12. This show played a enourmous part in who I am now. And how I dress lol (the bowtie concept of "it's cool because it's ridiculous I love it and I don't care" really had me going)
I can relate to that, Doctor Who literally saved my life. I was living the worst period of my life. I had nothing, I was couch surfing, unemployed, semi escaped from my mental/physical/sexual abuser. I was a mess and very suicidal. Doctor who gave me hope and spark to move one day at a time. I still love the show so much. Also I will always be grateful to Amy and Rory's love.
@@arona6692 Props to you!! Always be yourself! 👍
Ahh, what a crossover!! I've been a fan of hers since Doctor Who. I'm so proud of how much she's accomplished since then.
NO WAY. I LOVE KAREN GILLAN. YOU GUYS ARE SO LUCKY YOU GET TO MEET HER
I first saw her in Oculus. I won't forget that night, nearly 10 years ago, huddled in a corner at a halloween party (maybe not fully sober), watching the movie, being terrified of a mirror because of Karen Gillan's acting. It takes a lot of work from the actors (and director) to make an inanimate object feel terrifying, but she was so good that I'm still scared of that mirror.
Great, underrated movie, except for the weird issue of her and her brother having absolutely different accents for no reason.
I don't even have to SEE the scene of Vincent, I'm crying. One of my favorite episode endings of TV ever.
Amy and Rory (as a unit) are my all-time favorite companions! And Karen is just such a sweet, relatable nerd too ❤
Super fun episode!
Well... apparently things were not great between them on set.
My god the Van Gogh episode in doctor who, I saw this in a time where I didn't think my contributions meant anything..... this hit so hard.
She made me love Doctor Who. Her character was so deep and emotionally compelling.
U GUYS CAME SO FAR IN YOUR JOURNEY WITH CINEMA THERAPY FROM YOUR INSIDE OUT VIDEO TO HAVING FELLOW CONTENT CREATORS AS GUESTS TO HAVING DIRECTORS AND FINALLY ONE AND ONLY THE KAREN GILLAN I AM SO PROUD AND HAPPY FOR YOU
Insane that you got Karen on the show!!
That van gogh doctor who scene was instrumental in helping me process my dad's suicide when I was a teenager so it's always been monumentally special to me
While Doctor Who is a relevant topic, I suggest Jon consider checking out the episode Heaven Sent for Mended Light. It's a great, mostly stand alone story about overcoming grief.
It's also a solo performance and it's amazing
Maybe I will!
Karen is one of the coolest actors I have met!
I'm literally rewatching Amy's era of Doctor Who right now, so this is perfect timing 😂 I love Karen Gillan in DW and Guardians Of The Galaxy!
I’m kind of sad that Selfie wasn’t discussed. I loved that series, and I think it was just a few years ahead of its time. It should have been a massive hit.
Karen mentioned at conventions about learning her character's motives in Selfie. I post updates about the Selfie cast on my page! They still get questions about the show even now. Karen and John met up last year.
Not the soundtrack for the end of Vincent and the doctor in the beginning!!! Instant crying right here i loooooove that episode ❤
It's one of my absolute favorite Who episodes, right up there with the episode with Ten and Donna where the Ood have "red eye".
Oculus is my personal favourite movie of Karen’s, as well as one of the most underrated horror movies I have ever come across. Not just from an entertainment standpoint, but also from a bit of a personal one where siblings undergo trauma and they use each other as stepping stones to overcome it (obviously what I went through was NOWHERE near as bad as that, but it’s just from a standpoint of where I felt seen). I get that Oculus is pretty confronting from not only the supernatural aspects, but also the trauma aspects, but here’s hoping you guys do a video regarding that and trauma regarding siblings. Thanks so much for all the work you do and keep kicking ass!!!!!
😭In the Doctor Who Vincent van Gogh episode Karen, playing Amy Pond, plucked my heart strings with such skill that I cried-- ugly cried. It takes exceptional ability for an actor to give even the best scripts that much emotional power over the audience. Way to go, Karen.
So excited for this actor deep dive! Karen is such a great actor that even though it took me awhile to warm to Amy Pond, it was never because of the choices she made as an actress, she always delivered (I just didn't care for the choices Amy the character makes in regard to her relationship with Rory). And I adore Nebula, the arc she has in the MCU made her the character I was most invested in by the time we got to Endgame. And then seeing her pull off comedy in Jumanji - what a legend!
As you will soon see, she's also just a delightful, down-to-Earth person. You're right, though, she's an incredible talent.
The Ponds and their daughter River are the best companions ever written for Doctor Who. Best story line of all time.
Wow, Jono and Alan, this was so cool! It's so much fun to see you guys get to interview so many huge talents about their work like this, and Karen is such a superstar in every way -- I especially love the way, in every interview, you take care to champion their range and body of work, which has to be so meaningful to them. Huge kudos -- beautiful, moving interview with one of my favorite actors of all time. (The fact that Karen played Nebula, Amy Pond, and Ruby Roundhouse/Martha -- that's Oscar-level range right there.)
So glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Watching her work since her Dr Who days. What a great actor!
YEAH, ONE OF MY FAVORITE VOICE ACTORS!!!
Hearing her voice... I squealed!!! Can't wait!
I feel like I need to live in Scotland. Scottish women make me 🫠
"Every life is a pile of good things and bad things."
Definitely feeling that lately. it's now been over a month since my mom died, still not handling that well.
I love that they used Vincent and the Doctor as the backing audio :D
KAREN GILLAN??? I'm so excited for this episode, I LOVED her in jumanji and the mcu ❤
Karen Gillan is so talented. I'm so glad you guys had the opportunity to interview with her!
I say this with love but your thumbnails are not doing you justice for these guest episodes!! It's so awesome that you're getting these guests, the whole world should be running to these videos
KAREN OMGGGG!!!! Thanks so much y'all this one was awesome!
Thanks for watching! :)
That episode of Doctor Who makes me sob every single time! Karen Gillian has such a range, I always love the things she creates/stars in.
OMG OMG OMG our fav internet dads actually got the actual real KAREN GILLIAN in their vid like hell yes
Pleasant surprise to see Doctor Who in an episode
I fell into a very heavy burnout with deep depressions. All I could do every day was go from my bed to my couch, watch tv all day and return to bed (and wrestled terrible thoughts). That's when I rediscovered Doctor Who. The Syfy channel was airing the 11th doctor, Karen, Matt, Arthur and Alex. They made me laugh, they made me cry, they showed me life is beautiful and worth living. They helped me through my burnout. I am forever grateful for them coming together and create such an awesome show. I will always love and miss Amy Pond. And ever since, I've been rooting for Karen to have an amazing career. I went to see Oculus in the theatre, just to see how she did in a different part (plus I love horror).
I loved the vulnerability she brought to Selfie and am still mad it got canceled. Her rendition of Chandelier was tears-inducing.
If you're interested, Karen Gillan made up the ending to Selfie on my page! She met up with John Cho last year too
Thank you for finally going over Nebula. This isn’t just Nebula-you guys got the woman who brought her to life. This is awesome!!!!
Omg you guys, this was SUCH A TREAT! Karen Gillan is absolutely one of the best actresses of our current time, I utterly adore her. I love that you started with the Van Gogh episode of Dr. Who. Personally, I think it's probably one of the best, if not the best, episode in the entire series (at least modern Who; I've never watched classic Who). Amy is my favorite Companion, Karen is amazing. I've got to say, I have literally never watched that episode, or even just some specific clips (that last scene, or the scene where they bring Van Gogh forward and have Bill Nighy's character do the brief on what he thinks of Van Gogh) without crying, and even watching it in pieces with you guys talking, her performance still made me cry. I'm delightedly jealous that you got to actually meet her, and I'm *so* happy that you had her on the channel!
THIS IS CRAZY!! as a longtime karen gillan and cinema therapy fan this is just wild to me
Oculus is to this day one of my favorite horror movies! It's genuinely so unnerving
I liked hear angry nebula face so much. She made bad emotions adorable.
You guys didn’t reference it, but I also loved Karen Gillan in the short-lived “Selfie” TV series. Only lasted one season, but I really would have enjoyed them getting the chance to turn “My Fair Lady” on its head.
Yes!! My page is dedicated to Selfie. Karen Gillan and John Cho met up last year too. They still get questions about the show even now.
Let's gooo, I was scrolling down the comments looking for someone to mention this amazing show. I literally got chills when I read your comment and saw you mentioned Selfie. I watched the show back when it was new a decade ago and like many others, I wish it lasted for longer because it's amazing. But even with its super short amount of episodes, it's enough to leave a mark. Many reviewers told the same tale about how they initially thought the show would be just another basic haha superficially funny dumb show but that episode by episode they saw how the writers were doing something great and building great character arcs and journeys. It's one of the biggest tv crimes that it got cut short, but what a gem for the few of us who know it 🌟
@@selfieigniteomg it's you!! I searched up Selfie content and interviews a couple of years ago and I watched some on your channel, I know because some of your vids are marked as viewed to me. Thank you for everything!
@@OshawottLuke Aw, you're welcome! Someone is trying to get the cast together for another project. I really hope it goes through. Selfie's 10th anniversary is later this year ☺ It was definitely ahead of its time.
Oculus was one of the first horror movies I ever saw. I was 14 years old watching with a friend after after her surgery. We had such a fun time! I’ll never forget that day!
Nice! She is such a talent! Very much looking forward to the full episode! 👍🏻 👍🏻
2:47 This part & the earlier part where Vincent is at the museum in this episode gets me every time...
Omg omg you got her!!! Congrats Internet dads!
I was obsessed with Dr Who and Amy Pond when I was growing up- truly loved her performance soooo much and it helped me through some difficult times. I remember sneaking into the theater to watch Oculus when I was 14 because she was in it, and it would turn out to be my first exposure to Mike Flanagan’s work (who is now one of my favorite horror directors). I love her soooo much! This is amazing 🥺
Thank you for talking about the Vincent episode in Doctor Who. I was waiting for this one. Also, love you Karen!
I'll always love Karen for her role as Amy Pond. So excited to see her on here! Had no idea she's a Director. Love to see the success she's had.
The character differences between Amy Pond, Ruby Roundhouse and Nebula, are amazing to be played by one actress
I've been watching Dr Who since the 80a and NEVER EVER has an episode made me weep for joy until the Van Gogh one
HOW?! HOW DID YOU PULL THIS OFF! She is freaking g GENIUS!!!
Oh, this is gonna be good! I love Karen Gillan.
Ever since Doctor Who, Love her!
EDIT: That James Cameron story was amazing!
Was so good to watch this!!
I would love to see you guys tackle X-Men 97, because that show is filled with interpersonal relationships that need to be reviewed by you too!
The James Cameron story was just fantastically great. Loved it.
My introduction to Karen Gillian was actually through the series Selfie. The scene where she sings Chandelier at the karaoke party just broke me. I have followed her work since then, love her! ❤
Many thanks to Jonathan, Alan, Megan, Corinne, Stu, Emily, Bradley, Anna and Karen!!! 🤩
Appreciate it!
@@Sarbury12 🍻
Thanks for watching! :)
@@CinemaTherapyShow You're very welcome. 🌱
The first Dr. Who episode I have ever watched was the third episode of Matt Smith’s season with the Dalek’s. The episode where Amy Pond and Rory die and a Christmas Carol both make me cry every time I watch them.
Karen is so cool and genuinely humble and just really cool so glad this got to happen.
Karen Gillan guest star?! Woo hoo!! Geronimo!
Discussing Nebula as "the scapegoat child" really reminded me of the concept of the "Identified Patient".
Like everyone else here, she's one of my faves. Also, David Dastmalchian, which was a killer episode. Highly recommend that one Can't wait for this one.
Public service announcement: we did two episodes with David 😊 as you enjoyed the first one I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the second ❤
She’s so talented I can’t believe yall were able to get her on this show, thats insane
So hyped, love Karen Gillan!!!
I'm so happy you guys got Selfie superstar Karen Gillan on your channel. One of the best gems of the decade.
Not recognizing James Cameron is a power move.
If you guys havent already, you should do West Side Story. The relationship between Tony and Maria is so laughable but it also feels real, along with the conflict between the gangs.
Vincent and The Doctor is one of my all time favorites. I remember watching it as a kid when it first came out. Since then I have made a point to try and see as many of Van Gogh's sunflower paintings as possible (for those that don't know there are 7 versions of Van Gogh's sunflowers, I have seen 2 so far.)
Damn, one day im gonna be opening one your videos and its gonna be f*cking Martin Scorcese as special guest. Really proud of you guys!!!!
Woah! I love your guys' stuff, but I think this may be your best episode yet! Great questions. Great scene selections. And K-Gill, too!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it. :)
I'm not sure how many times people have said it already, but I'm going to say it anyway: Karen is the best.
This video just showed me further proof of how sweet and talented she is!
I was lucky enough to get my picture taken with her and other Dr Who cast members at a ComicCon a few years ago, and I (being fairly short) was surprised by how tall she was. I made a comment about it and she said, "Well, how about...." Now, I'm not sure if it was something she was supposed to do because there were so many ppl in the picture, but she knelt down in front of me. She will likely never know how much it means to me that she noticed my insecurity, and took a step toward making me feel better about it instead of ignoring it. Thank you, Karen ❤
RUclips should have a LOVE button - this was terrific! Karen Gillan is delightful, and the interview well done. Thanks!
This episode was such a treat. Karen is so amazing and kind and I love her everytime I see her in a film or on a show, which shows what a brilliant actress she is. Thank you for inviting her
Haven't watched the episode (just got past the introduction)... wanted to say that Gillan is not only one of my favorite actresses of all time, but one of my favorite PEOPLE. She's simply a lovely person and I wish I could get to know her on a personal level. Of all of her many (MANY) roles, the one that connected with me the most was actually Nebula. I had a rough life growing up and (believe it or not), I see a great deal of my own mental processes and reactions in that character. Bravo, Karen. We love ya. :)
I've only seen the MCU and Jumanji from the ones mentioned here.
I loved Nebula right from the beginning of her dynamic with Gamora. I haven’t read the comics, so I'm not sure how their relationship was portrayed there.
In the MCU, you can really feel the sibling vibe between them, and I always hoped they would finally reconcile. When that scene came, I was tearing up-finally! I’m so glad it wasn’t glossed over like Magneto and Quicksilver's relationship.
Additionally, the short time Nebula spent with Tony drifting in space showed what a family could have been like for her, given that she had experienced only hardship and violence her entire life.
This moment conveyed so much with very few words, especially when she picked him up from the floor, sat him up nicely in the chair.
Check out The Party’s Just Beginning!
Karen was such a delight! Love to see how far your channel has come!
I've have a print of the Vase with Twelve Sunflowers painting (doesn't say "For Amy", hard to find that) since I was a teenager in 2014 or something. Got it as a present because of Doctor Who. It's now hanging up, finally framed, in my first apartment! 💛
Standing next to it this very second as I watch the Doctor Who clip
It's lovely that Karen got to have the one used in that scene 🌻
Amy Pond is one of my favourite companions (next to Captain Jack and Donna; all the power to the red-heads, here^^), and the van Gogh episode is one of my absolute favourites. I cry every single time when Vincent listens to Bill Nighy's character explaining he thought van Gogh was one of the greatest artists of all time.
Then, when I saw Karen Gillan in Jumanji (and later on in Avengers), I was really happy for her. I've never seen her in anything else before watching Doctor Who, and I'm always happy for actors who manage that jump from being in a small (or, in Doctor Who's case not so small) show or movie that's only known to a specific audience into big Hollywood movies that everybody knows. They deserve that.
That Doctor Who scene instantly made me cry again.
The scene where she learns that Rocket was alive and going to be ok, brought me to tears.
I wish I could have watched this the MOMENT it dropped. I love Karen and well done getting her on my favorite channel. The Van Gogh is my absolute favorite episode of Dr Who. I’m crying just watching the small clip it was such a powerful performance.
She is so incredible. Nebula is one of my favorite characters. I love her depth and arc and realness.
You guys should talk about "I Can Only Imagine." I know that it has some tramua triggers in it for a lot of people, but it would be awesome to see your guy's take on it!
That single fucking line: "All I wanted was a sister" provokes the most immediate and raw emotional reaction from me. To me that is the highest form of acting and shows how Karen Gillan is one of the greatest. I wish she gets the same opportunities and recognition people like robin willams got.
How did you convince Karen Gillian to come on the show?
Sometimes awesome people just come together, like you and I right now :}
Combination of the efforts of our buddy Stu, who lives in Hollywood and pounds the pavement for us, as well as Karen being friends with David Dastmalchian, who may have put in a good word for us.
@CinemaTherapyShow well, thank you David Dastmalchian. And I guess your buddy Stu as well.
this was far too short 😭 Karen doing the outro is something I didn't know I needed until now
The dynamics between the three of you is amazing!
And she really seems like a... a remarkably good human being, you know ?
Karen is absolutely fantastic!! Somehow I missed that she’s also a director, I’m delighted to learn that! So, that wasn’t brother energy…sisters bring that energy too in real life, especially when we’re teens, it just doesn’t get portrayed in the media because so many filmmakers are coming from the male perspective and they haven’t been part of those experiences so they don’t know.
I first saw her in Doctor Who like many people and ever since then any time ive seen her name in a movie trailer ive always anticipated seeing whatever movie it was. Such an amazing actress and such a kind soul.
I LOVE HER SO MUCH!!!
I am so stoked you guys got to interview her, I she’s come along SO far from her Doctor Who days!!! 🥹
