I find it really amusing that people have gone from, "I hate this pedestrian warning speaker!" to "What do I have to do to enable the pedestrian warning speaker so that I can have the Boombox!"
Update tesla contacted me yesterday and they have a retrofit available for $200 which will give you the speaker and the boombox software. Mines getting installed tomorrow
Because Boombox can essentially completely disable the horn if enabled on a vehicle without the speaker, they are probably being very careful with the rollout. So it is probably VIN locked, and they will probably want to check the car or talk to individual owners to make sure the speaker is installed and working properly if installed after factory. (Altho, you can upload an empty audio file even if you have everything setup and disable the horn / pedestrian sound, not a good idea)
I’d rather have the power trunk than the boom box. But I’ve had the pleasure of driving my M3P since September 2018. I love the piano black console. I had it wrapped it xpel glossy clear, so it’s protected and still piano black. No fingerprints or dust with the wrap.
I know this is years late, but even the 2018 models have the wires for the PWS, they're just under the inside of the passenger kick plate. There are retrofit guides for how to extend those wires all the way to the front bumper and enable PWS on 2018 cars. Even if you install all the hardware, Tesla needs to enable the boombox for your VIN and that's not always something the service centers will do... seems to be hit and miss based on the employee you get. But it is possible, and without doing any irreversible damage.
Another youtuber mentioned (if he is correct) that you have to have the fsd computer from a later vin to have the output for the speaker itself. If you have the 2.5 computer because you did not pay for fsd there is no amp or connection to drive the speaker. The wiring harness is then another thing. In theory, if you can run wiring, you could run one yourself from the computer under the dash, out to the front.
June build Model Y, I had the wiring and ordered the speaker. Installed it, did a double thumb wheel reset and the speaker was making the UFO sound in reverse only... Next day it stopped working altogether and the update didn't add the boombox. I will leave it and see if it comes back to life. We will see.
I was told by service it was based on my Vin at first they said I couldn't order a speaker for model-Y because it's not part of my Vin parts list. Called him out on it and he said he could sell me the part but it would void my warranty if I installed it myself and service would not install it even if I payed them. Informed him of right to repair laws and he ended the call and cancel my service appointment. Top notch service. I was also lied to by delivery team when I asked about the speaker I was told it would be enabled by an over-the-air update in the future when required by regulators. Had the holes in the grill so I thought I was good to go.
I argued with my service centre for a week before they agreed to let me buy the part 1299965-00-A well not only do I now have the UFO noise I also have boombox Tesla installed it maybe when it’s goes into Tesla service mode the vehicle knows it’s there vs installing yourself

I'm thinking that toggle will become available very soon right now all focus on getting deliveries completed before the new year. First week or two of January I'm sure they'll start taking appointments to install and toggle on boombox. Make your service appointments now in the app so your first in line !
My Model Y app says that update 2020.48.30 is ready to download. If you get this update, I'll be curious to know what it is. My Y is locked up in service center jail waiting for parts. Thanks and Happy New Year!
Great work. Bought speaker, for my 2020 July Model Y, installed. Did reset, worked temporarily. Messaged Tesla service, tried to get Tesla to recognize it. Was just told through service messages that it requires a gateway that is not available so they can't help me.
It's unlikely that the car "knows" the speaker is there. It's a lot more likely that the basic PWS signal is being sent whether the speaker is connected or not. But the additional Boombox feature would only be enabled if the flag is set for your VIN.
No. That’s not how it works. The software update reads the cars OPTION CODES and only activates PWS if it sees that factory Option Code. This OC can be added but only by a certified Tesla technician

Two comments.. 1) There is a much easier way to check for the PWS wiring than removing the frunk lining--> Just remove the three push pins in your passenger wheel well (turn your wheel all the way to the left), peel back the plastic and look in to the upper middle left of the opening..should be dangling - its a gray+white wire in loom (mine was wrapped up in blue electrical tape) 2) My local detailer was telling me that even if you install the PWS, enable it and have the OEM sounds (like you guys did in your prior videos), it will disable itself over some period of time (either after the driving session that it was enabled, or over the course of a few days)---Any word on if this is true? My model Y is vin 33,XXX, built in 08/20 and has the wiring +grill.
Yeah I installed mine on my 40xxx Q3 model Y, bought the part from service center, about $55. It works after about 2 driving sessions, then disables again when I connect to wifi at home. Then enables again after a few drives or a reboot. Tesla service has cancelled my appointment twice asking for activation claiming it’s impossible.
To clarify, by “works” I mean the backup sound and forward sound. Boombox is not installed and still not added with 2020.48.30. I was told by my service advisor when I asked them to retrofit it at my last visit in October that they’d need to program the car and install the part, or could sell me the part over the counter. At $195/hr labor rate I opted to install myself. “You can’t just install it, it won’t work” they said. Watching it work on this channel, I opted to try it myself first. It worked, sorta.
Help me out Rick. I bought my M3 LR AWD 9/23/2019 and have installed 2020.48.26 but don't know if I have the external speakers, PWS, etc. Do you know where I should look on the menu to determine this? TIA!

Installing a toggle switch to shut it off would be pretty cool. Especially for off roading in the CT. Even if it's just a manual switch along the power line of the wiring harness.
I don't think it's wiring-harness dependent since my March 2020 build came with the PWS speaker, but I unplugged it using the Abstract PWS Isolation kit. However, the Boombox feature still shows up on my screen so I have the ability to use it, just there's no sound when I press the buttons. So my software is trying to make the sound, just that my PWS speaker is unplugged and it doesn't detect that.
I wish my car would have came with the rear decklid speakers (which I'm missing and want to wire up) instead of the PWS speaker (which I disconnected and don't want to plug it back in).
I got my Model3 Nov 2018 and I noticed a speaker icon shows up to the left of the car visualization I can click it and it seems to mute? Is this for the Pedestrian warning system? I have never heard any one talk about this.

My Sept 2020 MY installed the .26 version, instead of the .25. Other videos on the subject say the .26 covers units with factory installed speakers. You might ask ask see if you can get the .26 download from the mothership.

He said you can apply on your app for a mobile service update for a update to the cars software. That should push the update or possibly a second update to send it after an initial one.

Does Tesla hold an individual configuration of your car held centrally. If it does it may think that you don't have the required speaker. It may only download Boombox for those where there are central records of a Tesla factory installed speaker.

Tesla model Y got updated in CHINA INCLUDED NEW CENTER CONSOLE , Heated steering wheel, HEPA FILTER, NEW DOOR PANEL, NEW AMBIENTT LIGHTS. But only black interior is avaliable.
Maybe Model Y, aren't setup to receive that software push since people that had them installed from the factory haven't received the update either. Would be interesting to see if a Model 3 gets the speaker installed and see if boombox pops as part of the update
By law all Model Ys build starting Sep/2020 must have PWS, so more likely VIN or some other identifier is stopping boombox feature from showing up. I got Model Y in August, I might order speaker and install it myself or wait bit longer to see how this develops.

I was told by a rep at Tesla that the Model Ys and 2020 Model 3s made after 8/29/2020 are the ones with the speaker already installed because that’s when the law started being enforced. Unfortunately my Model Y was made on 8/23/2020 so I don’t have the speaker. They also said as of right now they wouldn’t be able to retrofit it into cars that didn’t come with it and if the option becomes available that we might have to pay, but only time will tell 🤷🏻♂️
WASP system needs to improve the installation method for a model 3. I don't think I'm about to figure out where I can tap into 12 volt and potentially cause issues with the vehicle. Tesla's don't like being tapped into their electrical system.
I’ve heard the car configuration cannot be changed without regional managers approving so sounds more of a corporate limitation rather than a hardware / software limitation.

No. It’s not dependent upon the VIN. Your car has a list of options codes more detailed than the trim level specified by the VIN. Only a Tesla certified technician can add the Option Code that will allow BoomBox app to become activated

Where did you find the harness. Are you sure your not seeing the three wire connector just under the frunk
SC isn’t evolved enough yet to enable the boombox and has to be pushed from high up the latter based on VIN

@@PHDTS plug it back in and set custom silent.mp3 as warning sound so you retain all other functionality.
So what’s the final answer? If you have the wiring can it be added and get the features?

Correct. Each vehicle has an associated list of Option Codes. It’s stored on the vehicle but Tesla has the ability to read it.

October 2019 M3 LR, got the speaker, got the boombox. Just wish that it can play something different inside and outside.
Not in Australia unfortunately. My January 2020 LR Model 3 has the speaker holes but no speaker. Not sure about wiring yet.

M3 SR+ 03/20 with the speaker and Boombox

We bought a Model Y that was made in July, no speaker. My daughter bought a Model 3 that was made in September and it has the speaker.

I’ve heard the car configuration cannot be changed without regional managers approving so sounds more of a corporate limitation rather than a hardware / software limitation.

You need someone with Tesla Toolbox to edit the gateway config to tell the car it has a speaker.
Any hints on how to find someone?
Hey I was thinking it's even possible to put in a bigger speaker as it looks like it's just a L/R speaker wire. Just as so long the speaker doesn't need much more power. 😂
It will need to be a marine or special purpose speaker that can stand up to immersion in water. A regular speaker wouldn't last long.

No. It’s not dependent upon the VIN. Your car has a list of options codes more detailed than the trim level specified by the VIN. Only a Tesla certified technician can add the Option Code that will allow BoomBox app to become activated

Was the wire hard to find? I yanked my frunk out yesterday and tried to find it, but it's kinda tight in there... I've got a 07/19 build M3.
