It’s not so much var it’s the mixed up rules they have to follow. One game it’s a handball one game it’s not.. one game it’s offside the next it’s on.. there is no consistency and no set rules to go by.

Nah Pat bro your take on the Liverpool - VAR incident is actually atrocious, this wasn't a subjective decision, offside calls by the VAR is one thing that we aren't supposed to argue with because offside is objective, you are either offside or you are not - simple. As for fans thinking it is only happening to their club, that is a fair point, but that doesn't mitigate the fact that a decision which ultimately led to Liverpool losing one of their most important games of the season will have no ramifications

As a Liverpool fan I actually agree with that point. It’s a travesty the goal wasn’t given but at the same time other large profile mistakes happen all the time. Just this year, Ake and zaniolo were clearly offsides and blocking the keeper which should’ve meant a disallowed goal but because the games were not high profile or competitive, it wasn’t viewed in the same light. VAR checks on both

Agreed, I like that he mentions and puts focus on the players character when it comes to these debates, it shouldn’t be ignored. It’s very annoying that they cut it out this episode.

I think football daily is very socially consecientious, as seen by dougs, mccubbin, henry, djellab, etc. The issue is that they're owned by Sky Sports, which is too big of a brand to sponsor that talk, no matter how sensible. Making videos about racism in football and emphasizing the woman's game has been one of the ways they've shown their ideals. It's just not totally maintainable when they're not in charge.

I really like the way hockey does VAR. Each team gets to request an appeal for a decision, and if they are right about it they keep their request, but its taken away if they arent honest. There have been many incidents where potentially game changing moments just arent checked because the ref or the rules didnt deem it important enough, and this would probably encourage teams to be more honest about fouls.

Isn't a similar thing done in cricket as well? albeit the decisions are much more clear cut in some cases as compared to football or hockey. It's so weird how cricket has a much more nuisanced way of making checks to umpire decisions as compared to football.

@@theendlessphoenix2799 I dont watch cricket so I cant comment on that, but hockey fouls are generally more noticeable and less debatable than football fouls, since rules on contact are much more strict.
I will also say that they way hockey VAR affects the decision might be a good way to make football VAR better, in that the video assistant umpire is check if there is an OBVIOUS REASON to CHANGE THE UMPIRES CALL, not to completely review the incident. The video footage of the video umpire is also broadcast during the decision (althoigh ive only seen highlights of bigger international competitions, since hockey isnt a very popular broadcast sport). That being said, I think a similar model would work quite well for football.

Totally agree with the VAR discussion. Maybe it’s because I also watch cricket and rugby where technology is used well. I think VAR has potential it just needs to have a better process. It would be so backward compared to other sports if we didn’t have var

How do they let him get away with saying shit time and time again. Credit to Pat for getting upset with him early on, but you can tell he was tired of the bs and just shut up after it

It's mad what doogie said about Paul Scholes "not being watched as much when he first got into football". If he was a player now he would be that player that doogie said every week, noones noticing the quality of Paul Scholes because he's playing a vital part of the game that isn't as visible as scoring a goal every week.

With VAR, they need to allow managers to have atleast 1 or 2 challenage calls a game like they do NFL coaches. If something seems overly rushed and not right the manager can challenge that call and have it reviewed based on his opinion and it has to be looked into. If we are going to have this stoppage in the game, might as well let the managers have a say and if they are right they get a max of 1 more challenge, if they are wrong they don't get another challenenge. Challenges that are deemed correct after the game that were not called during the game result in an automatic docking of 50% pay for the refs of the game/VAR official (the pay that is docked can go to charities). Give the manager some power if we are going to have unknown people in the VAR booth.
