  • The ballerinas of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo are not your average ballet dancers. The NYC-based, all-male comedy ballet company features dancers performing classical ballet pieces like Swan Lake and Les Sylphides in drag. Dancers Robert Carter, Alberto Pretto, and Haojun Xie give us an inside look at their journeys to becoming members of the Trocks.

    i clicked the video thinking they were just about the comedy and drag but they are actually amazing dancers! and flipping over the classical ballet stereotypes of only women being allowed to wear pointe shoes is really inspiring

    I was luck to see them. Saw them when they preformed at my university a few years ago. I was still a student so I got a discount and got to sit close to the stage.
    Loved the show! Admire the strength and artistry of the show and of course the parody/comedy. As a former ballet dancer(non-pro) I laughed at the parts especially where they did things you as a dancer want to do but know your not suppose to do. For instance looking in a different direction then your suppose to, slouching, making a face due to a mistake,slipping/falling, "boredom", making a struggling face when lifting their parter, losing a prop, break character and so on.
    I defiantly recommend the show to all.

    The Japanese have been doing it for years with their Kabuki performance. Where men, dress up as woman for their performances. So if Kabuki can do it, Ballet can do it.

      +minniepop90 That's not a Japanese thing only... it has been happening in the theatre for centuries... It's not as common now as it is not weird to see women acting.

      I think most part of the world have the culture of guys playing female roles... That's weird.
      But I am Cantonese, Cantonese Opera have this tradition for a long long time. There is currently one male actor playing female roles in Hong Kong I think...
      (he plays the "dan" characters, which are young ladys)

    I finally got to see the Trocks in 2018. Just spectacular, well done all around. Ballet is constantly seen as "frilly" & "dainty" when the truth is that ballerinas have to abuse their feet every bit as much as a football player does with their bodies in a high-stakes super bowl. It's a good bet their toes feel as if a tractor rolled over them much of the time.

    I saw these guys the last time they were in Australia - hint hint, guys, please come back!!! - and they were beyond amazing. Although, I'm never EVER going to be able to watch the actual ballet of Giselle, because I'm fairly sure that you're not supposed to be laughing so hard during Act II that you can hardly breathe. I'm just almost certain of that.
    And just remembering that scene had me snickering away loud enough that I just got a wierd look from my housemate... I'm going to try and find a video of it and show him I'm not crazy. I'm mean, well, I am, but not like that...

    Indonesia also has traditional dance where men dress and dance as women. The history was during colonialism, men did it to protect young women from doing it, which usually ended with rape and abuse to women by the soldiers. And so it became a tradition and continues until now.

    the troc comedy routines are one thing but the fact is that males en pointe can do some truly gorgeous dancing...and no i am not taking away in ANY measure from the Troc dancers who are very talented. Id just love to see some more male dancing en pointe when it isnt being done "for the laugh" I know there are dancers who do this, and id just love to see more of it, because it is beautiful and if choreographed for males, men en pointe doesnt have to be a pastiche of women, because theyre not....its different but nonetheless beautiful. Anyway, the Trocs are still great dancers

      Ballet schools are surprisingly heteronormative - when I studied dance back in the 80's, out ballet school invited a judo master once a week to train us boys - make us more butch!
      I'm afraid I was too gay for ballet: "I had to do WHAT with a woman??!" 😋

    • @KeenKoala115
      @KeenKoala115 3 года назад +4

      No, the toes are not bent when inside. Ideally the knuckles build calluses to prevent from rubbing but the toes are straight inside. This is achieved through having a tight box surrounding your foot that’s the support system. You’d break your toes the other way around.

    Traditionally, Beijing Opera in China was done by all males as men and women weren't permitted to stand onstage together. Some of the major stars such as Mei Lanfang were revered back in the day.
    Even today in China, men dressing as women for performances is still an art that's practiced (it's now called "反串/fanchuan") with stars like Li Yugang who are very well-known.

    I can't decide whether the Trocks find it easier to get big-size toe shoes their size, since men's feet are bigger,so females don't need them, or harder to find because the need wouldn't be anticipated by a manufacturer as much. I'd guess since they're professional dancers, they've got lasts at the manufacturer, made for each individual dancer's specifications, like any other dancer.

    The Chinese dancer complains that his feet couldn't cram into toe shoes until he found a softer pair, that it was painful and he inferred female dancers don't suffer as much.. He inferred women don't have the same pain. He just isn't used to it the way the women are, and should know better. Ballerinas go through agony, too. Bleeding, blisters, callouses, scarring, deformities, surgeries. A ballerina's feet are deformed and ugly, scarred, wounded. She uses various materials to help protect them but it just hurts. Plus, ballerinas traditionally are expected to look skinny, even anorexic, and he isn't... the Balanchine company emphasized unnaturally sylph-like bodies, and his ballerinas even became anorexic and addicted to drugs to achIeve it. Both male and female dancers work through the pain of ballet, and at a certain point in the dance, the pain is pushed away, dissociated from them as chemicals are released. At least when this Trock dancer does parodies, he doesn't have to be as unnaturally graceful as a classical female ballerina! Ballet isn't natural. It's not natural to land on your big toe and try to escape gravity while being graceful at the same time. All professionals suffer for their art. And as an aside, I've observed that many shoes made in China tend to be too narrow, even for Amerifsn women. I'm under the impression as a consumer that their feet are narrower, and they model their cheaper shoes on their own feet, and they don't fit me. So I respectfully disagree with this Trocker. He's just not used to submitting to the pain of fashion, the way women have traditionally done both in China and America. Welcome to our world! I'm glad you're a Trocker! Stay well and safe, young man! You're beautiful!

    • @Lolibeth
      @Lolibeth Год назад +2

      That is not what he said at all. He said that he thinks that female dancers don't have the same problem because their feet are narrower on average. They don't make pointe shoes specifically for me so they're using women's sizes which are narrower, in general, than men's shoes.
