My check engine light came on and I was worried I took it to advance auto parts and they said it’s the thermostat and you literally really made my day!!! I don’t really know much about engines and when I seen you pop the top off and right there was the thermostat!! Thank you so much. When ever I change mine im still gonna have your video on. Outstanding!!
Joe, thank you for posting this video. I travel 60+ miles one way to work, and the risk of overheating on my commute would suck. I love being able to fix something myself, and I’m not trying to take away from a mechanic… but if more people were knowledgeable enough to manage a small repair…the mechanics can focus their time on more complex issues.
The broken evap system hose you found is a common failure on these vehicles and one of the reasons the "Small Evap Leak" code (P0456, P0440) comes up. A lot of the info out there suggests replacing the ESIM unit behind the rear driver side wheel well but the connections on the purge valve hose you found are often the culprit. These connections become cracked causing the evap leak. To save money some people wrap with electrical tape or cut the bad hose off and replace the bad section with new hose and hose clamps instead of replacing it entirely.
Nice Vid bro. Coolant temp was creeping up y to 3/4 during a 4 hour road trip in 104 degree weather. Was able to buy a thermostat at the local Oreillys swap it out in 25 mins. Dude you are a lifesaver! Thanks!
Nice video, used it as a guide to do mine took only 15-20 minutes. I used one of those pry tools made for removing interior trim fasteners to pull out that plastic fastener, and it did so without breaking it even in the freezing weather here. Thanks for the upload! Now I just have to clear the code and see if that fixed the problem, or if my sensor is bad.
Well it was definitely the thermostat, warmed up hotter than usual... then climbed all the way up to 3/4 on the temp gauge, then went back down to right in the middle, a bit warmer than it ran with the old thermostat. But then I generated a brand-new code by forgetting to plug in that air sensor in the air intake. Cleared them both so all is well now!
thanks for the video. Other viewers should check out another video where the guy uses the bleeder valve on the thermostat to bleed the system as the very last step.
One of those guys that tries to make their friends/clients responsible for every decision... 🙄 Even down to whether his own dog should go inside or not... Lmaooooooooo
My 2014 with just 46,000 miles just started to over heat a bit(no code). The radiator fan was blasting. Upon checking the lower radiator hose I found it to be cold. Bought a new thermostat and a gallon of orange and all good now. Thanks for the guidance
OMG I’ did the same thing that little plastic thing broke off while trying to change the thermostat, simple fixed J B weld quick fix epoxy works great, but if I do get a check engine light I will replaces it thanks to your research and item # from Amazon’s, I did the whole flush cuz the coolant was orange and my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited called for OAT so I’ve picked that up from the dealer, but anyways thanks this video helped.
I did this, but check engine light is still on. I saw the other answers here on this issue. But should I drive for a while and see if it goes off on its own, reset the battery, or do I need to take it in (the whole reason I did it myself was to avoid taking it in). Advice please?
So when you tried to pull up it was caught by the square part of the assembly, the video edited. Was that just a plastic pin that had to be muscled off, or what? I am having issues getting mine off.
So does the check engine turns off after running a couple of miles after replacing the thermostat or do you have to delete the code? If I have to delete the code can I just disconnect the negative cable or have to be done with the computer
The code should clear on its own after the computer recognizes that you've corrected the underlying cause of the issue. If I recall correctly, it has been a while, I think the check engine light went off on its own before we replaced the thermostat. The owner of the vehicle wanted it changed anyway for peace of mind.
Longtime Jeep fixer upper at home, had a quick question: What were the tools you used? A 10mm wrench, a pry tool, a tool to loosen the thermostat hose, and then... the "stubby" screwdriver? Was the screwdriver a 10mm or a flathead or a Phillips? Thanks in advance
I changed mine out; After, there was a puttering noise that goes off and on. Drove it a little, then there was a balloon pop noise(one time). Haven’t heard it again but the sputtering still persists. I’m thinking I got too much antifreeze on the belt… Any thoughts would be appreciated 🙏🏻
Hi Joe - Great video...I clicked on the link for the part in your description and Amazon indicates that it doesn't fit my vehicle...2015 Grand Cherokee...can you confirm that is the correct park linked? thanks!
I have had to do thermostat replacements on a few pentastar motors now. Normally what I do is I'll refill the system with any lost coolant. I'll start it and let it get up to operating temperature. Typically it starts to overheat a little bit and I shut the engine down if it goes above 225 or so and let it cool down fully. That usually draws some coolant out of the recovery bottle and replaces any air. Sometimes I have to do that procedure two or three times. I've never had any problems following this procedure and it doesn't require any special tools. Obviously way too time consuming for a mechanic to do but I've got all the time in the world since I can multitask while I'm waiting for it to cool.
Have you had a issue with rubber seal sensor dripping oil on to the manifold than smell 👃 coming from heat vent having that issue now 2015 grand Cherokee v6 passenger side top of lifter cover gasket sensor
Overeating can be caused by many things. I would start with the simple things first and make sure you have enough coolant in the system. If you do not check for sources of coolant loss. Check the condition of the oil to see if it is milky which might indicate a blown head gasket or a crack somewhere. Coolant going out the exhaust will have a rather unique smell. If the coolant level is fine, check the condition of your serpentine belt and water pump to make sure the water pump pulley is turning when the engine is running. Also make sure the cooling fan is running when it should. If that all checks out you might want to look at the thermostat next it could be stuck closed.
You check your maf and map sensors, or clean your throttle body head? Those may need to be changed due to heat and how jeeps are made. Also check your cabin filter (not under the hood , its located under your glove compartment. ) they should be changed when you change your engine filter(not mandatory but its apart of basic maintaince.) Try those I'm doing the same. I have a 2012 Grand Cherokee Jeep.
@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC yeah there is. I'm going to redo it this weekend and grab another thermostat. I even changed out the bleeder screw and still had a leak.
I don't recall seeing that behavior. Do you know the actual engine temperature? A lot of the gauges they put in cars today are programmed to stay "in the middle" unless something extreme is going on. I have a hunch you may have air in the cooling system... Though I did not have to use one when I changed the thermostat in this video, you may need to use a tool like this: amzn.to/3JaKlYw
It might just be coolant that got on the belt, causing it to squeak. Check your belt routing as well. If it still persists, you'll need to isolate the squealing to a component on the front end accessory drive.
@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC I knocked this job out this past weekend and your video was a great help. The worst part is that I dropped my 8mm and then 3/8 to 1/4 adapter removing the air duct, and never found them. Also, despite my best effort not to break that evaporator tube, it broke. Same spot as several other videos I've seen so maybe it was cracked already. Duct taped it as a temp fix. Anyway, the actual thermostat swap was a breeze. Used a plastic bag and some old microfiber cloths to cover the belts and absorb any spillage. The new evaporator tube is coming today so that's the next job. Thanks, man!
if you're not willing to remove the top shroud for worry of damaging anything so you ask the car owner to do it, I have trouble believing you have the ability to do any repairs with any trust. Not sure if you were kidding but not a great way to start a video.
Highly doubt it was a joke. It’s all in the tone, and the fact he waited until the owner actually removed it. If it was a joke, he would have paused a couple seconds and said naw just joking I got it. Plus when someone calls manufacturers instructions “malarkey” that might be a red flag. Maybe.
You guys are making a mountain out of a molehill. The owner is a personal friend of mine, has been for years. We were just goofing off. If you don't care for it, then don't watch the video.

Update: found it. A stubby flathead as the clearance for it is miniscule. :)
Does this come with an O-ring or do I have to buy it separately?
Replacement thermostat (with housing) will come with a new o ring. Use old one if lost / not included.
Did the check engine light go off I had. That code showed up
It may not go off immediately but eventually it will
Just did mine as my thermostat house blew a big hole in it, not sure why it blew such a big hole though

Are you referring to a leaking valve cover gasket? Sometimes the spark plug tube seals fail as well. I have not had that problem personally.
Question once you changed the thermostat out with the new one did your check engine light go off
Yep all was good! The vehicle has since been unfortunately totaled in an accident but it ran fine up to that point. No lights
I changed this but my engine light is still on? Any ideas why? I’ve already drove it for some time now
I would check to see what codes are stored in the computer. That should give you an idea of what to look at next
