Modifying A Cheap Plastic Greenhouse To Fit Over Raised Garden Beds!

  • A cheap greenhouse is something everyone wants to start the plants for their homestead garden. We took this greenhouse kit and set it up so that it can be placed on our DIY raised garden beds for early planting. There are many inexpensive kits out there on the market that seem to be a great choice, and they all suffer from the same problem. But can these home greenhouses be fixed?
    In this video, we'll show you how to make some modifications to a cheap, chinese built greenhouse kit from Amazon that will greatly improve the usability AND mobility of this interesting greenhouse kit. A simple wood foundation for the greenhouse can give it a solid platform to sit on, and some inexpensive wheels from Harbor Freight and can turn it into quite the handy little hoop house.

    I bought a 12 self one online at a proxibid auction site for $30.00..I've had it for about a year and finally, put it up a few days ago..I put black plastic under it to keep the weeds down, anchored the whole thing down with stakes over the frame, then added pea pebble rocks on the inside about 2 inches deep, and secured the outer edges with white rocks..Edited here..I also zip-tied the shelves down..I plan on finding some other type of shelving to use since these are rather flimsy..But so far I'm loving it..Was a breeze for me alone to put up..

      I bought a small shelf unit in a tractor supply markdown section. I put it in storage and forgot about it for around three or four years, then I put it up and used it for starting seed for 3 years before the plastic deteriorated. Good deal for $15. This experience led me to research cattle panel greenhouse construction on Utube.

    Yup, I spotted it in your other video. We got one of those off Amazon. It stood 1 day, literally. Next morning it was down after a windy night. The ground anchors held, but a bunch of those flimsy plastic elbows busted, so the frame just fell apart. It was all slip fit mostly anyways, so the only thing holding it all together was the canopy.
    I got a refund from Amazon, they didn't even want this thing back. I figure if I was ever to put this up again, I'd purchase some steel elbows, and either drill holes through them and the frame for cotter pins, or just use thread locker.

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  4 года назад

      Pond Acres Threadlocker could work. Honestly though, ours has been out in some ripping winds and hasn’t come apart since we got it on the platform. I’m guessing tolerances from one kit to the next aren’t that strict though. And some are looser than others.

    • @pondacres
      @pondacres 4 года назад

      Your platform gave it enough form I guess, held it all together. Cool, whatever works! The canopy itself is great, seems really hardy.

    I bought tht exact greenhouse, I also bought a smaller for the more tender plants that could use more protection and put it inside this one and then put the cover over both. They are so cheap ypu could not buy shelving, all be it fairly cheap chelves for that mon ey. I am sort of a carpenter at home and will be doing similar to what you said. I live where it is pretty windy the first year I hadn this up it got blown over but not to much ddamage. I will be sinking T posts in the ground. Ever try to pull a t-post out that is down deep?.... I will attach the frame to the t-post and put the tiny greenhouse inside (it fits perfect). I will be framing it with wood like you. Framing around the bottom and making it secure. Mine will be close to the house almost attached to it. I live in the deep south, I will need I for seed starting only, I do so many I can't control them in the house it is too messy. Being so close to the house I can run a heat during some of those frosty night. I want to surround the outside with hard plastic, I don't know what it is call it is like roofing material. Nothing to difficult or expensive but it will be fun. Nice video...

      @@TheMindfulHomestead I don't use those with the white tops there have no holes to screw through. I used 5 foot ones and make them taller one on top of another using screws. I did not do the greenhouse yet I broke my wrist and couldn't. I am starting this month I have two greenhouses I am putting one inside the other, the smaller one will hole more delicate plants. I will be making a solid wood frame. Each corner will be stakes on the ground it should not be able to move. I will continually add to it. They sell extra covers and you can also get white heavy plastic. I live in Tn, it is pretty warm but our wind and thunder storms blew my roof off last year I really need to stake it good. I also have to make a wood door since the existing one won't be strong enough. Good luck with yours. Happy gardening.

    I do have 2 mini greenhouses that I bought on Amazon. Unfortunately the plastic was destroyed by the sun and wind. To buy new covers would cost almost as much as new mini green houses. So I have this hair brain idea of getting a couple of cattle panels and putting them over the tops and putting green house plastic over the cattle panel. So before I go to that expense I just want to reach out and get your opinion. I would use the sixteen foot panels and at least one T-post on each side. So what do you think?

    • @TheMindfulHomestead

    In about two years the plastic will start to disintegrate. They are designed to be thrown away in 1 - 3 years. Plan on buying one every couple years.

      We’ve had ours on about 2 years now. It’s still in great shape. We treat it with 303.

    To be honest, I can’t figure out the need of the purchase the kit. Didn’t you basically build the green house already?

      The cover, the tubing, and the shelves are all art of the kit. I didn’t take anything away. I just added to it.

    34 So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), 37 you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
    39 And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear, 41 not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. 43 To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

      @@TheMindfulHomestead his profile picture is just as ugly as his comment. He’s making it really obvious to the world that he hates life and himself. Happy people don’t do that. You can say something sucks ass without being such a dick about it. Well anyway I liked your video :) and the little chickens!

    Mindfulness is the opposite of Holiness. Trust the Lord God of Heaven, and not your own self. Trusting in yourselves is denying the existence of God, and worshiping themselves as their own God. The Lord has said that anyone who does not accept Him bye this time you die, you will be denied entry into the Kingdom of God’ for Eternity with Him. The scriptures say:
    “ALL WHO CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED “ . And also: IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART THAT JESUS CHRIST IS LORD. YOU WILL BE SAVED. You will be saved by believing in your heart that Jesus Christ died for everyone’s sin. Was buried and he rose to Life on the third day. And with your mouth confess that Jesus is Lord, YOU WILL BE SAVED!
    Please, for your sake and the sake of your family, I pray that you call upon Jesus now. Before your time runs out.
