I can say from my own experience.
Everything he said in this end is true, I'm 16 years old now, and got my guitar for the first time in the end of October of 2017. Since then I have been always enjoying playing the guitar, as he said, I'm simply addicted to it.
I never had any classes, it was all for fun and by self thoughting, and worth it.
Nowadays I'm happy playing the guitar and I can say that I have never imagined to become in the level that I am today in a so short period.
For who wants to play the guitar or any instrument, do it because you like, and not because you want to show yourself.
As he said, doesn't matter your level, if you are a master or a beginner, only matters the joy you feel when you play.
Let the passion be your best teacher.
I'm sorry about the bad English. I'm Brazilian and wanted to share this with you, for you see that the passion moves us.

Ya know, the ending to this video is a really good message. I just, I personally don't have the motivation to play anymore or do anything. I've always loved music and computers, hell I'm in college for software and video game development. Both of these things were things I was extremely passionate about a year and a half ago. I just don't feel the motivation anymore. I don't do any programming or developing outside of projects. I don't play or make music anymore. I have two guitars, a bass, and a piano just collecting dust. It's sad. It's shameful. I don't know why I typed any of this, just a vent I guess. But that joy and passion is something special to have and I wish I could get it back.

I'm 38 years old software engineer, I love my job, it has been my passion since I was a kid, spending nights recompiling the linux kernel in my laptop trying to have a performance boost (which I didn't need it)... but it wasn't always like that. College was extremely frustrating and I took also some time to do other things (management, sales, etc.). Programming and music are quite similar, many programmers (as myself) are also musicians (better than me, I hope). Programming and music are very demanding disciplines. There is nothing wrong feeling unmotivated or taking some time off... just try do identify these moments and find alternatives, something close to them but different, fun. In short time, you will come back to it and you will enjoy it again more than ever. Don't buy the `code (or play) - eat - sleep - repeat`. It isn't real. You need focus but you aren't a machine

Thank you Matt. I had a short 3 months course for classical which I stopped due to financial reason. The journey of self learning and teaching is much harder than imagined. You have nobody to tell you the rights from the wrongs, you have only yourself to figure it out There are times that I felt I had reached a plateau for YEARS, and till now I couldn't even be bothered to practice for 30mins. You have shown us the most important thing in success: DISCIPLINE.
Thank you for doing what you do. I wish you health and success in the upcoming years.

I started playing at the start of 2019. It was the best thing I could of done. I was a bum for a year and a half out of highschool to scared to go outside and face the real world (I may not be out of this rut but I sure as shit am close to getting out of it). And during that time guitar was the vice to my heart. I’m not the best player but when I do play it frees my mind and gives me hope!
P.S. I’ve made two guitar tunes this past year if you’d wanna check it out go for it!

I started as a fingerstyle guitarist when i was 12 and quit for about 2 yrs, and then returned when i was 14 still a fingerstyle guitarist, for about 3 months or something I saw face melting guitar solos, after that I switch from fingerstyle to lead playing, I have known that is really my thing, so I kept practicing until now, I can still play fingerstyle guitar but not as good as me playing lead. So yeah that's my story, how's yours?

If you have no life like me,and if you can grind something for hours at a day,you can already play songs like scuttle buttin or rude mood by srv..in about 9 months or less.Dont be intimidated by others who play better, because some day you will play even better than them.If you are a beginner, dont be discouraged by thinking that it is really hard to play..

I stared when I was 17. Now I'm 18 and I learnt a lot in the past year. I'm self thought guitarist.
Can you prescribe me a good website from where I can learn furthermore? (if it's free then it'll be great)
    Thank you. 🖤

Daria Boldea I’m about the same age as you and I use the website songster.com a lot. It has a lot of free tabs, I recommend you to check out the guitarist Tommy Emmanuel (if you play acoustic)

Succes.

But what if what I enjoy is technical/progressive metal that literally took the writers years to learn? :D
Stuff like Between the Buriend and Me, Haken, The Hirsch Effekt, vildhjarta, Exotic Animal Petting Zoo...
I found that I probably can't ever play a single song of them entirely, but I still enjoy playing the things I can play.
So I guess you're right.. just have fun with what you do.

One thing I want to point out, the fact that you didn't take guitar lessons is not something that makes you "have" to study. Bet you don't know what you're doing in terms of playability, chord progressions, techniques etc. If you like guitar, if you love music, having guitar or music lessons won't make it a chore. It will make you improve and aspire to do better. I did take lessons in the early stages of learning guitar and it pushed me to learn more. If my teacher wanted me to practice a certain technique I would reach his lesson with the technique almost perfect and tons other I was studying in the side. So no, it's a lie that you shouldn't take lessons, or "it's the best thing you should do". It depends on the teacher, there are teachers who just throw you information without any context. Myself as a teacher, 10 years after I started studying music and after I took my formation in guitar teaching, I can say that I always make my students try to learn by using real examples. Let's say you're learning your first few chords, I might as well throw you a bunch of songs to play with and try to keep up and most of the time my students come to me "yeah I actually noticed I could play X and Y song with these chords too!" and they're super happy when they do it! Each boundary you overtake is an accomplishment and most people love that feeling and many of them try to actually practice to feel that feeling. But I understand what you mean. Enjoy your job so much that it's not a job anymore it's a hobby. So yes, sorry for the long text and keep up the good work

Top tip. Always have a guitar in the boot (trunk) of your car and practice whenever you’re waiting for someone or something. You never ever get bored and are productive this way.
