Polaroid Auto Focus 660 Review and Sample Photos

- The Polaroid Auto Focus 660 was released in the early 1980s. It was a square-bodied instant camera in Polaroid's 600 series. It was the first in the series to use Polaroid's patented Sonar AutoFocus system. The distance to the subject was calculated by emitting a sonar pulse which then was captured again and the focus was set by the camera. This camera uses the 600 type film. Check out the video and my sample photos.

Have the same camera myself, love it! But you forgot to mention the autofocus override button under the flash, it's really nice to have when taking pictures through glass as the sonar will hit the glass and focus on it.
WOW.....I didn't know what that button was for! Thank you for the information and comment!
Amazing info! Thanks
FINALLY SOMEONE MENTIONED IT! I didn’t know what it was.
But how do I use that button? Hold it while taking the photo? Press once? Please give me an instruction.😊
@@gingerlegato5222 I've just held it in. And it has worked fine for me 👍
Thank you very much for this video I learned a lot of things ! I just found my dad’s old Polaroid autofocus 660 and had no idea how to use it
Glad you enjoyed the video! And learned a few things about how to use your dad's camera. Thank you for the comment!!! Enjoy!
I wish film wasn’t so expensive. Anyway, going to buy some soon and try out my vintage camera. Thanks for the informative demo Paul!
Yes, I suggest you buy some film too and have fun taking pictures. It's a fun hobby! You are welcome!
Mine's a Sun 660 SE, and it's gold, but I assume it functions much the same as this standard 660. Does it typically charge the flash automatically, or is mine broken?
They are basically the same....most of them are. Yes, it automatically starts charging the flash when you lift up to open it. Sounds like yours might be broken. Make sure you are using a fresh pack of film....the batteries are in the film. If you don't have film in the camera, the flash will not charge automatically. Good luck!
just got one off the street and it works! super excited to add it to the collection
Cool! Good for you! Have fun with it!
Thank you! I found this camera at the thrift shop and couldn't figure out how to turn it on. Now I know!!
Yay!! I'm so glad the video was helpful! Have fun with your camera!
I thrifted that camera a year ago from 2 sons who were selling their mothers/grandmas stuff who had passed away. I think I only spend like 5€ on it but I never could try it out cuz I don’t have film. This video helped SO MUCH to understand the camera, I’m def gonna buy film some day!
(The comment of that one person saying the grey button under the flash is to override the autofocus to make pics through glass, also helped, thanks, Just saying :3)
That's great! I'm glad the video helped you. Yes, get some film and try it out. Glad the comments helped too! Thanks!
Hard to believe these weren't a novelty when I was a kid but a camera essential.
They were kind of a novelty. Most people had 35mm cameras, not many had a Polaroid.
Paul-I rescued my camera from MIL estate. In Jan. 2022, I purchased 2 film packs; one black and white, one color. Just got around to installing in camera (which is in pristine condition). Tried to take color pic, June 2023. (Film 1.5 yrs old, at least.) First slide came out, but no image. Now, red light stays on when button depressed 1/2 way to charge. Red light won't go out. Do you think film/battery is old? How long should film/battery last? I will try the black and white film pack, but would like to know your opinion as to life of film/battery. Love your channel! Thanks!
Good questions! Without knowing the camera and whether or not it was working properly before you bought it, it's hard to say whether it's the film/battery or the camera itself. To me, if the red light is staying on that makes me think the battery isn't strong enough to charge the flash. So it could be the battery....could be old. I've used old film before and it has worked just fine. Since you didn't get any image from the first picture, there could be something wrong with the camera itself. It's really hard to say. I would suggest having someone look at the camera who might know what could be wrong. If the same things happen with the black and white film, I'd say it's the camera. Sorry I can't offer more possibilities. Good luck with it. I hope it works soon! Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for this man! Just picked up one of these from the thrift store and was wondering how it worked.
You're welcome! Glad the video was helpful! Have fun with your camera!
I have possibility to buy this camera for $35... It is working but there is only one problem: flash doesn't work. Is it something easy to fix? maybe a capacitor is worn and need replacement? It is worth to buy it?
I don't know about fixing the flash. You'd need to take it to someone who can fix it. But I would say you could probably find the same camera with a working flash on eBay or elsewhere for probably around the same price. I don't think I'd buy it with the flash not working. Good luck!
@@PaulArmstrong1964 I tried ;) Seller was wrong and the flash is working 😅
@@pokulan Glad to hear it! That's great!
i just got one from an estate sale for $9!!! i’m so excited :)
That's great! Enjoy!
Thanks for the review! I’m new to polaroid cameras and this helped so much! the example photos really helped! :)
You are very welcome! I'm glad the video was helpful! Thank you!
Hello Paul. May I know is the autofocus system actually the one which move the elements of the lens to the right place to make the picture in focus? Or it is just automatically chooses the right fixed-focus lens for you in between close up and infinity, just like the modern Polaroid Now i-Type camera?
Hi Raymond...sorry for the slow reply. If I remember correctly, it does move the elements to focus. It is not like the modern cameras that have a fixed focal length.
Love the video, i'm planning to buy one and this video was truly helpfull
Thank you! I'm so glad it was helpful. Enjoy your new camera!
So the dark slide is just used to cover the back of the printer out photo when it’s face down, correct?
The dark slide actually covers all the film that's in the cartridge. But yes, you are correct.
Thanks for the great review, Paul!
You are welcome! Thank you for the comment!
@@PaulArmstrong1964 I have noticed a wine rack behind you, so you are indeed a rare connoisseur of real things in life. Well done and all the best!
@@diantar Thanks! Yes we do enjoy our wine and have quite a collection. It's another expensive hobby. 🤣 Thanks for the comment! All the best to you too!
Can't wait to get this fella for myself soon!
You'll have fun with it! Enjoy!
hello, can this camera model use any 600 film? greetings and thanks for the video👌🏻
Hi and you're welcome. If you mean Polaroid 600 film either black and white or color, then yes, it works with both. Hope that helps.
@@PaulArmstrong1964 Hello, thank you very much for answering, yes I mean any 600 film, I have recently bought this camera, greetings 👋🏻
@@Guisasolatv Ah...good for you! Have fun!
@@PaulArmstrong1964 I have another question, does the i-type film work with the polaroid sun 660 autofocus?
@@Guisasolatv No, the I-Type film does NOT work in the 660. The I-Type film is a modern film that does not need a battery in the film whereas the 600 cameras need the battery that is built into the 600 film. Hope that helps. 😀
Thank you for the review, simple quick useful :)
Thank you!
Thank, great review.
Thank You! Your Video ist very helpful!
You are welcome!
I have my Mom’s from when she was my age. Hoping to get film so I can use it!
When you get that film, I know you'll enjoy it! Have fun!
I need help. So I have my camera and it came with a cartridge but it has no battery or film so I looked online to see what polaroid sold. I could get the cartridge and like 8 pictures. Now I'm pretty sure the cartridge batter will outpive more than just 8 pictures and I noticed target sold the film alone for a lot cheaper so I was wondering if I could fill the new cartridge with the film so I don't have to buy a new cartridge every 8 photos
I'm not sure if I understand what you are saying. Every time you buy film it comes with the cartridge which has the batteries in it. They do not sell the film by itself. Make sure you are buying the correct film for your camera. If you bought a new cartridge of film why would you take the film out and put it in another cartridge? It wouldn't matter if the battery will output more than 8 pictures because each time you buy the film the batteries are part of the cartridge.
Yeah I did not word that to well let me try again. I just bought this camera at a yard sale. It has no cartridge. When I go to buy my cartridge it will come with 8 pictures but after that if the battery is still good can I buy the film alone to load that new cartridge?
Which I'm pretty sure you answered that I just want to clarify
@@nabomatic2439 No, they do not sell the film by itself to load into a used cartridge. Each time you buy the cartridge it comes with 8 pictures, the batteries and the cartridge. There would be no reason to try to buy the film separate and load it into the cartridge.
Oh I guess that makes sense that system just seems flawed. I guarantee those batteries can last more than 8 pictures it's kind of unfair for us to have to spend all that money just for 8 pictures, especially when there are literally no other buying options. Thanks for the help! Great video
Hi, the dark slide isn't coming out when I put new film in. Do you think that is the film or the camera? The camera makes the noises, just doesn't spit out the dark slide
Hi...if it is happening every time you put in a new pack of film then it's probably the camera.
The one step plus, with q-light is so under rated, that no one covers it. They always use a flash bar, or the mint. If you can find a qlight, use it on your box camera if it doent have the fold light.
Great idea! Thanks!
Nicei info there is white bottom right under the flash thanks what is for? Thank you no thank you for the inf.
When you first open the camera, that button turns on the flash so it's ready to take a picture.
That button disables the Autofocus, you should use that for pictures you take through windows for example.
I say one at my grandfather’s place but forgot where it was at. Just got a new one though because I couldn’t stop thinking about it😂
Good for you! I know you'll enjoy taking photos with it. Thanks for the comment!
What film does it take
It takes Polaroid 600 film.
i got mine for 25$ i think that’s pretty good
Yes, I'd say that's pretty good too.
thanks brother
You are welcome!
Autofocus is not active if you use it without flash as far as I know.
Thats also why in the manual polaroid suggests to take ALL pictures with the flash
Oh wow! I didn't know that. Thank you for sharing the information!
@@PaulArmstrong1964 Yes, but no guarantee at all if thats right.
Anyway, when you depress the first flash button you hear the ultrasonic disk chirping. But when you only depress the lower one for taking the pic without flash I cant hear it
Its a big mystery in general in which ways this camera is working.
I also kind of suspect that the "Autofocus-System" is more like an automated switch, switching to close up mode if some object within 4 feet is detected and if not just leaving the lens at infinity
@@unfinishedthought That seems like it would be the case. Sounds like you might know more about the system than I do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Is this the newest Polaroid 600 camera ?
No, I don't think so. The old Polaroid company made several other models in the 90s. I think mine is from the late 80s. The new Polaroid company makes the Now and the Now+ that use I-Type film.
I got one for 8 dollars at a garage sale so i bought some film and am having some trouble with the film coming out bad
Oh no! That's too bad. When you say bad does that mean it won't come out of the camera or the images don't develop correctly once they are out?
😍😍😍 Wow, just what I needed to find. So happy that I was allowed to keep the camera and saved it from the landfil because I helped friends moving. She still has a film in it and does not work 😢 Is it possible to replace only the batterie because the film is still in the camera since last use and there are 6 photos left. Would like to save them. Does anyone know? How does that batterie looks like? By the way the camera looks brand new and came with the original bag. Blessings from Germany
There is a way to take the film from the current cartridge and put it in a new cartridge but it's complicated and a little difficult. If the film has been in there for years, the chemicals are probably dried out and won't work anyway. It's best to just buy a new pack of film and start fresh. The batteries are in the cartridge of the film so a fresh pack of film will have fresh batteries to make the camera work. Good luck!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Why does my film come out yellow and blurry
I'm not sure why that is happening to you. I wonder if the film is expired or the focus isn't working properly.
"these days you do not shake the picture"
Actually, you never shook the picture. Polaroid officially came out to state this when the song first got popular
You are correct! 😀
Today I learned you can take a Polaroid without flash
Glad to hear it!
I found one at an antique place for $15 I hope it works but I'm not betting on it
I hope it works too!
My fiancee collects vintage cameras just for fun, because they look cool. I bought a film pack and was very surprised to see the 660 still worked! I think a lot of them end up at antique shops or thrift stores because people don't realize the batteries are in the film packs, so there is no way to test its function without a film pack.
Good luck!
Just found the camera at a garage sale I don't know how it works 😅
I hope the video helped you out some.
If it needs refurbishing Retrospekt can do it. I bought mine from there. It was pretty cool to find out they're right in my neighborhood. Neat little shop.
You never shook this film, then or now. Was only the peel-away polaroid film you would shake to dry it out.
That is correct! No shaking needed on any of the Polaroid film.
