Love the way you share your knowledge. Awesome Channel!
FWIW, Some acrylic comes with UV protection from the factory and others don't. So whenever I polish acrylic whether it's a headlight or a window, I always go back over it with wax or ceramic coating to add UV protection (depends on the budget) just as a precaution. Though more expensive, ceramic coating is best since it will last years and wax will do a similar job but it will have to be re-waxed a few times a year to keep it protected. Also, both wax and ceramic will cause sea spray to bead up and run down the vertical windows reducing the amount of salt that dries on it. Cheers Dauntless Crew!
I agree it’s almost finished get uv protection or you will be polishing again.
Great video. Quick tip, don’t use glass cleaner on acrylic especially if it has ammonia or alcohol in it. The chemicals may cause it to craze or cloud over time. In the airplane world where windshields are typically acrylic, we all use specialty cleaner like Plexus or good old fashioned Pledge.
Project Farm just did a video on headlight fix up. Looks like 500 is the place the start, 800 is step 2, and 3000 to finish with. Also found that non 3M sandpapers generally sucked. Watch his video for details
I am a FIRM believer in useing an in-boom mainsail furling system. They make sailing so much easier, especialy short handed. It's also a SAFETY issue for me as it allows you to REEF so much easier and FASTER. You also do not need to turn into the wind to reef anymore, its a simple adjustment and your set to go. This helps in emergencies when a sudden squall or gust of wind hits, you can just press that magic button and your safe. Oh, and no sail bag or jack lines to worry about, just a far cleaner design in my opinion!
Awesome window job! You just ticked one of my “How am I going to do that” boxes on a major future project - Thanks!
I'm continually impressed by your can do ability. Well done.
i used Brasso to all so help refine the scratches out of Polycarbonate it gives a very good cut and polish to your work face.
I'd imagine that the money saved on replacing widows would go a long way towards paying for those Festool items. It ain't a cheap brand, but you pretty much get what you pay for when it comes to tools. Fair winds!
You dont need Festool for this. Carpolishing/buffing Tool you can get cheap. The buffing dont need a lot of torgue but no high speed. If you have a less powerfull buffing tool use a smaller diameter head or/and less pressure and little bit more time.
The Sander is despides it got a round Sandpaper NOT a Rotating Tool but an oszilating one (i think they rotate in itself little bit arround the mein shaft but thats not the main working motion just a secondary effect).
The 3mm he is refeing to is this oszilation motion. Multitools got similar messurements of their powerstroke in an angular degree for excample.
If you got more stroke on your cheaper machine use it with less pressure and go faster over the area. Maybee more time with smaller grid. if it gets less stroke... well you just needs little bit more time to get the same result.
The Keypoint is you have to work your way down the grids and you will need a lot of grid types and some bunch of it. As you saw you can be missleadet witch grid it might be.. just to be safe start 2-3 finer as you thought it might be and see how it looks. it only takes secounds to see if it matches.
you can allways sand it more agressiv and switch to a larger grid but not the other way arround.
I owe you an apology Ty! When you first got started sanding the windows, I totally thought you were just making that shit up as you went. But holy clear-glass Batman was I ever wrong! I shall never doubt “Obi-Wan Tynobi” again!!
I am humbled by your compliment…. May the force be with you…😂
@@SailingDauntless 👏👏👏😎
Great turn of a phrase!😎
Right approach, I personally go to 8000 in a wet dry sanding pad, amazing results
Hi Guys'
I enjoyed your reworking the windows. For a final finish try paste type toothpaste. I used to do polishing on plexiglas, and toothpaaste works great. Keep up the good work.

Crest? Colgate?
Your screw ups are really refreshing ,knowing you are being open and honest and not putting on a show to look perfect. I'll take honesty over fake drama anyway. Also it's nice to see I'm not the only one who pulls bone head moves ,hey it's life if your not screwing up your not doing anything.
Thanks, and agreed. Mistakes means your learning something
Ahh, my next career , freaking awesome!
Ty is a true Craftsman...
Love the way he turns his hands to anything.
Thanks for sharing valuable insights 🤘🏴☠️
Spray bottle with water is your friend.
The windows came out a lot clearer than I had imagined they would using just those basic tools and a range of sandpaper. I've never seen anyone using a 2000 grit before until you did and now it's clearer to see (pun intended) what they can do with acrylic panels and windows. Have you used them on any fiberglass yet? We have a 43 foot Fifth Wheel with a full front and rear fiberglass caps and I expect to get some scratches in them at some point, which is why I asked the question about buffing out fiberglass. The windows really do look almost like new.
Good luck selling your 450……the market for 450’s was totally killed by the horrific issues with their bulkheads, nobody in their right mind is buying 450’s now.
We have a 450 in Australia. Lots of interest. Ours has no bulkhead issues and Lagoon is doing a warranty strengthen for us. 😀
@@andrewknights4062 of you are selling and have genuine interest, take their money!! Obviously they haven't done any due diligence. I can't see why anybody would touch one of these until the bulkheads are well and truly reinforced. Even then, this whole issue calls into question the design and production quality of all 450's and all Lagoons. I personally would not touch a Lagoon.
The last step, ------- Colgate tooth paste.
Awesome video! It was a super fun day sailing, besides the drone incident…
Suggestion, next time for last coat, try Rust-Oleum 2x Ultra Clear Non-Yellowing.spray finish. You'll be amazed,
You should be using a waffle style pad it reduces the heat so you wont get distortion in that acrylic
Suggestion, try some 3M Xtract Mesh sanding disks. They do a WONDERFUL job of sanding, and because they are a fairly open mesh, they let your dust extractor pull more dust out as you sand.
I found watching you polish windows fascinating! (Yep...not even sarcastic!) (That wasn't sarcastic either!)
Great "it sounds like somebody fart".
Never made that association...
Now I can not 'unhear' that. :-( :-(
LOL
It looks like that drone is a mavic air. Since dji has discontinued making batteries for that drone for a while now and its an absolute nightmare for people like me who still fly them to find spare batteries, you guys can put its accessories and batteries up for sale (if you owned the fly more combo and more batteries), and get some good money probably 70-80 bucks per battery if the rest of the batteries are in good condition. I'm guessing you probably have already resolved the problem by now but if you havent and are looking to replace that drone with a new good model, I would suggest going for the mavic air 2S or a mavic 2 pro (mavic 3 is crazy expensive), or if you want to go with a US drone try the new Autel evo model. If you dont want to dish out so much money for a new drone right now, you could always find a used mavic air like the one the sea took from you for really cheap, like $300 to $400ish or maybe even much much less if you were to find a mavic air by itself for sale without the rest of the accessories and remote, etc. Always good to see you post new episodes :D happy flying and happy sailing
Nice that Dave and Colleen got to go sailing after all the work getting their boat tricked out! Great job on the window buffing; seems like a big money savings!
Your window work need lots of work. First off never dry sand...Ive done thousand of widows in my life, and when you dry sand it might look good when done, but will craze in no time...When you polish, you polish in the sand paper grit with polish which will craze over.
Great info about windows, I guess these are acrylic so do not need UV sealer. I have some polycarbonate windows that need buffing, but that will also remove the UV protection so will need some type of UV coating sealer otherwise they will go yellow. I am trying to find a suitable sealer, but not much luck so far. Having said that car headlamps also use polycarbonate and the polishing kits for them often come with some sort of sealant.
5+ year drone flyer here. When loosing control, just chop the throttle and let it fall in the boat. You can replace props quickly. If the damage is worse, most times it can be repaired. You also have your videos saved. But if it goes in the water . . . . .
Wow. That's actually really good to know. I've done this method on headlights, but for some reason never thought about it when it comes to sailboat windows. I'll be taking a second look at the windows on my little sailboat refurbish project.
I would reco the use of a spray bottle for wet sanding as you never have to worry about the acrylic getting too hot. Also buy some 2000 and 3000 grit foam backed sanding pads to lesson your compounding.
Awesome video...one of the best (for use by almost ALL cruisers). Can you comment on the in boom furler (cost, ease of use...why someone would install - IE pro vs cons).
Wonderfull, but it is not an acrylic material, at least it is an policarbonete! It does not get milki in the sun like acrylic! And to avoid heating up, "melting the thermoplastics, work on early mornings, or wait for an much cooler day.
Well your submarine drone cost you $$$ but your mate telling you to buff out those windows saved you way more $$$ what's more important it saved you a week or more labour buffing out rather than replacing. Extra bonus in fact maybe even the cost of the drone is just the cost of whatever caulking material you were going to use a tube is not cheap whatever you use and it doesn't go far. You have easily saved hundreds on the windows you do not now need to replace. So its not just the cost of the acrylic.
Yes, loved the content... Big thumbs up from India...
Dave's new rigging looks great. I love the new blue Genoa. Thought it might have been a screecher for a second.
So as somebody who's polished a lot of acrylic I've preferred to do it wet. it allows you to keep track of your progress better. If it looks perfect wet it will look almost perfect after Polish in my book. It also helps the paper from getting clogged. Another tip is run a little dish soap in your water.
same, also 3m trizact is awesome stuff
super informative video guys, thanks for some great info that was really needed for us...
Great description about buffing out scratches, used this method to manufacture new port lights and hatches, and the works perfectly.
Question. I thought the black trim was just the adhesive behind the glass. Did it really need to be taped off?
Cool music! Hey Ty! If you ever commit a felony, you’re not going to leave any fingerprints! 😀
I can't believe how lucky you folks are! Dave & Colleen are the most awesome friends that you could have while rebuilding a new yacht! AND, they are 'modifying' theirs- while you are rehabbing yours- what a great melting pot of thoughts, ideas & creativity for you to share. It makes me so friggin' happy- what a gift for BOTH couples! Imagine how much better your vessels will be with the confluence of thoughts developed- WOW!
You said what I was thinking!
Come On Festool. Hook our Brother TY up already.
Good info.
Festool are definitely worth the money , might be a little painful when you part with the money, but better than the pain of trying to use “cheap” tools 😃🍻
nice job , but I hate to be the one to tell you , The black around the edge of your windows is the etch primer that is painted on to help the acrylic glue that holds / bonds the windows in .
its on the inside .
Good to see the work you are doing & not cutting corners .
light scratches can be flame polished out using a small blow torch but it only takes seconds before the perspex starts to burn. Practice on a scrap piece or a piece that won't be seen.
Does this method work on plexiglass glass, Lexan, etc?
Interesting content. Good editing. You make it look so easy. Thanks for sharing
Keep up the good work, I grew up sailing on a power boat all over new England it has been years since I've been out on the water, I now drive a semi so don't get much time to go somewhere where I can get out on the water
I've seen yacht detailers work with electric buffers while their feet dangled in the water. Is there not a risk of electrocution?
5000 grit buffing compound will make it like new.
That is pretty spectacular, I would never have thought of sanding acrylic, great job Ty.
This was great! I learned a bunch, Thank you! Thank you for taking the time to share this with us.
so you're selling the 450? I am praying for a miracle so I can get it lol
How interesting, thank you for that. Definitely learnt something. Thank you once again for the content great work
Festool should really sponsor you guys!!! also they are just the best machines out there
Thanks for another great one and for seeing a man who won't admit he has "soft skin" on video. bahahahaha
Ty your ability to impress is boundless. I love all of your videos because they are so informative, step by step with explanation is perfect. Can’t wait to see D2 finished with the sails out. How are you gonna choose a buyer for D1 ? Would love to know the price range.
Thank you. Info on D1 coming soon!
You waste more time explaining then doing anyone watching got the idea
Well done I will put that in my file for future use. Thanks
Thank you Thank you Thank you!! That's amazing!!!
You really should be wet sanding so you don’t create heat
I keep getting confused, is DII a motor yacht? Could've sworn there was a mast on that @ some point. . . .
Nope she’s a sailing yacht. Mast on the way
That was great to see, thank you sooooo much for the lesson....
Question that has nothing to do with windows...BUT, those solar panels that are used on the 450, can they also be used for use on homes?
Yes they can
So do you have your mast and main sail bought to rig up?
its been a good day, I learned something new!
Does it go to eleven? JK ... awesome job mate!
Your correct, Festool should sponsor you
Apparently he does windows
Very Impressive. I've heard tell of this process but never seen it done. Great job! BTW, as you surmised, "Perspex" is a European (and of course South African) brand name for acrylic sheet. Most popular brand in the US is "Plexiglass". Same product just different brands.
Thanks!!! RIP Drone. Been there.. Thanks for the demo on the window buffing. My 450 needs exactly that same work!!!
I would have thought you’d go from 2000 to 3000 all the way down to 5thou before using a cutting polish…Just saying. Still that liquid cut did the trick! Well done!
Another great one, they say to polish your Acrilan head lights with P2000 - P3000🤙🏼how long until your on the inside?🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🇦🇺
Good show ... great info :)
That reminds me...time to sharpen my chisels. Same exact process, though I think my stropping compound is about 20-30k grit.
Awesome job with that sanding and buffing.. I did the same on steel, aluminum, copper, bronze, etc., but never had the courage to do it with acrylic!! @24:47 - That was an awesome outcome!! Loved it...
Thanks for the tutorial
👍☑️ Great job, so interesting to watch and learn something that I would have used back in the day but will probably never need in the future LOL Tks for sharing.
please shorten the opening :)
Used to use what we called jewelers rouge for final final polish then buff with a cloth ..like you did...dont let it het too hot incase it picks up and smears you hard work ..so dont press on hard as you finish buffing.... A you covered that.
This might be of interest to anyone with PV panels ruclips.net/video/Ow0BHlSZg5M/видео.html water cooling on a boat isnt such an issue.
My windows were just fine before watching this.
Lol
That turned out great. I normally make bigger jumps in grit but now I'm rethinking that practice. Also thanks for reminding me that I need to buy a buffer.
Hi guys,I really enjoy your vids, learned something about acrylic polishing.
Awesome job guys :)
Just a tip here as you didn't mention it, keep all of your different grit sandpapers completely separated to avoid cross contamination. I have done this many times on aircraft windows. By the way, I'm in Arvada.
I love the ford shirt
Wow, didn't know that.
Looks awesome guys
Looks Fantastic.
Thank you! One of the best DIY videos I've watched in a long time. Showing the product labels at the end was great!
well done you D crew
Love it. Well done
For faster sanding and keeping the plexiglass temperature down use wet or dry sandpaper. Wet sanding cuts faster.
I would have jumped in for the drone it does not sink fast it was retrievable if you jumped as soon as it crashed.
We were sailing along pretty fast, that’s quite a risky choice for a drone. It was some spectacular footage though!
@@rhino_sailor7506 Well its your call... did this before but one has to be a strong swimmer and i knew they would turn around.
Great video
great video
👍👍👍👍👍
Amazing 😮! Tnx for this!
You're welcome 😊
really an amazing project - I thought it might work in theory, but you made it work in the real world. Well Done!
