Adopting older kids can sound intimidating if you think that adopting a baby or toddler is all you can handle. In reality, there are pros and cons to adopting children of any age. As a foster/adoptive mom to 2 toddlers and a mom to 3 school-aged kids, I have experienced both the toddler stages and the "older" child stage. In this video, I want to share with you the pros and cons of each age group to help you on your foster care adoption journey.
If you’re new here, my passion is to help children be placed in safe and loving homes by breaking down the barriers that make the adoption process so difficult for a lot of families. i’m young single and frankly immature so idky i’m even watching this beside the fact raising a baby and toddler from scratch gives me such high anxiety, and i thought well i don’t feel that internal anxiety about older kids so what’s the deal with adoption? watching this i know i need to be aware of many things but it feels reassuring the way you talk about the older kids. I think i was at first naive not thinking about potential trauma and thinking “oh well all older kids will be like that so nevermind,” but this is very calmly explained and in a friendly way that maybe i shouldn’t be scared out of an older kid. I’m very influenced by horror stories (hence my fears of babies and toddlers) but this video helped calm me down for tonight at least.

You might also like the channel Adopt informed with Katie. She adopted a toddler, and then a pair of siblings who were 9 and 6. All of her kids have some level of trauma from their previous families, but she has talked about how it's actually easier to help the older children through their trauma because they're old enough to talk about it.
