In this video, we head for a 3-day trip from Tokyo to Niigata, a prefecture famous for its high quality rice, beautiful coastal and mountainous sceneries, skiing in winter and hot spring bathing around the year.
We first check out Echigo Tsumari, a rural region showcasing contemporary art installations scattered around its fields, forests and villages, before heading to the remote island of Sadogashima, where we explore some of the highlights it has to offer.

Rural Japan is extremely calm and beautiful.. A introvert's paradise ❤️

interesting comparison. I have heard of people calling it an introvert country.
This was a great video! I really appreciate you showing contemporary art; that's something I almost never see in videos about Japan. I'll definitely save this to help plan a trip in a few years. Please keep showing destinations beyond maid cafes and Pokemon cafes. This content is unique and very useful.
Thank you so much!! : )
I live in Niigata city .
I'm glad to you have made such a beautiful video.
Can you tell Me ,which season is best to visit in Niigata and Sando Island?
@@rohitbhoite9570Thank you for your reply( ˊ ᵕ ˋ )
In summer, you should visit Sado Island. I like walking on ordinary road in Sado. On a hot day, I walk with sea wind and "青い(aoi)" rice field view.
In autumn and spring, you should visit Niigata! You can visit historical spot with a carm heart.
I recomend you Minatopia.
In winter...You should go to Tokyo, if you won't ski.
Thank you so much!
@@れんこん-s3e okay thank you so much
Hello! Your city is so beautiful! I love the way Japanese people arrange things around nature. Very nice example for the rest of the world!
I think Japan is an addiction. It's said that if you travel a lot then you have a life before Japan, and a life after. Because you just want to keep going back, as there is so much to see. So the 1st trip to Japan was for the Cities, the classics. The 2nd trip, still the cities but more depth to your favourites. The 3rd trip, and beyond... that's when you hit the little known places, the countryside, the stunning mountain views and the paths that very few people walk. The countryside soon becomes your favourite, for me anyway. Great video, thanks.
Thank you for your really nice comment!
Thanks for showing the beauty of Niigata, a place I've been calling my home for more than a year now. Would love to see Echigo Tsumari soon! Other places I'd recommend in Sado would be Senkakuwan Bay and Toki Forest Park. Back in the mainland, a visit to Yahiko in the autumn is one of a kind.
Thank you for the recommendations, and thank you very much for your nice comment!
Wow, adding Sado Island to my list! It's stunning. Thanks for the video. Counting the days until we can be done with this virus and visit again.
Hope you will have a great time in Sado Island when travelling will be possible again. Thank you for your nice comment!
This is my first in depth video on Sado Shima I've seen on RUclips. Kudos!
Thank you so much, glad you liked it :D

I only been 3 places in Niigata prefecture. Niigata city, Nagaoka & my favorite ski spot, Yuzawa.
I live Tokamachi.
Thank you so much for visiting our area!
I hope many people like Japan with your video.
Thank you for your really nice comment!
Absolute bliss to see a rather uncommon temple like Seisuiji, it looks so atmospheric and little touristy there. Makes me wanna jump off my chair and explore! And the small old village looks so scenic, especially with this bloody wide angled footage! 😍😆 Absolutely love this episode.
Thank you so much for your nice comment! These 2 spots you mentioned were a real treat to film and explore!
Simply stunning. As always...after these japan-guide videos I am stricken with wanderlust and ...my stomach is rumbling. Food and travel. Is there anything better? ...maybe that ice cold beer at 6:15. Another place added to my list. Thanks guys. Hope the bamboo curtain lifts soon and I can get over there. Till then...please keep pumping these videos out. So grateful.
Thank you so much for your really nice comment! We'll keep pumping the videos out :D
Really fascinating journey and beautiful explanation and description. Thank you.
I hope to visit there soon…
Glad you enjoyed it!
This channel is both a blessing and a curse; a blessing because every video is interesting, well made and a resource for many trips, and so beautiful!
A curse because we can’t go to Japan and it’s an excercise in frustration, that and it’s pattently obvious that a single trip is not enough to see it all and do it all!😅
On a side note is it possible to see somewhere what the budget for a trip like this would be? Transportation, lodgings, food expences, the like? I think it would help to plan a trip like that if the information was available somewhere.🙂
Thank you for your nice comment!
Because prices tend to change very often we rarely feature them in our videos. However on our website you can find all the up-to-date transportation and admission fees for each of the locations.

Excellent video as always!! We will definitely be trying to visit some of these places once Japan re-opens! Also really enjoyed Matt's voice and commentary! Would love some more videos from him.
Thank you so much for the nice comment! Matt indeed has a great voice and will definitely be in more videos :)
I fully agree. Matt has a lovely voice.
Sounds great, can you give us a guide for how to enter the country now?
Loved the countryside in Japan, especially Kamakurra was exotic to me as a european with the wildlife and nature. Wish I did more trips out of town while being in Tokyo, although I now know the city like the back of my hand ☺
wow thanks for the insight.
Awesome video! I’d love to try Taraibune, Japan have so many different beautiful places, outside the big cities is where the real peace can be found.
Thank you so much! Taraibune was really a fun experience!
Am looking forward to do this... 🥰love japan's food
Countryside of Japan r really beautiful and full of natural beauty..Wish I could stay there....Hope get to visit these amazing places in Japan....Lots of love and respect from India
Thank you for your nice comment!
A perfect three days itinerary throughout a charming prefecture. I am looking forward to visiting in the future this beautiful country. For now, thanks so much for this splendid virtual trip.
Glad you enjoyed it! And hope you will get to visit Niigata someday!

This was wonderful to watch. I lived in Kobe for a bit, and go back to visit family. You've definitely put some places on my to do list. Domo arigato gozaimasu!

Aloha from Honolulu 🤙Great video! Thanks 😊 Sado island is now on my itinerary
Hi! :) That's great to hear, hope you will have a great time there!
Mahalo 🎉
This was a great trip about an area which is not that popular ! Love the graphic animations !
Thank you so much!!
I would love to visit Japan one time and Niigata is one of four spots I have in mine "must visit in Japan list". You forgot to mention, that Niigata is famous for koi farms. Would be great to choose some fish there for mine pond.
15:20 Spooky hand coming out of the opening in the prison cell! 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for introducing me to my hometown.
私の出身地が紹介されてて嬉しいですねぇ!他の都市と比べると地味だけど楽しい場所です!
I really want to see rural parts of Japan but being from the US I am not going to rent a car in Japan because I’m scared of driving on the other side of the road.
I know getting to some of these places is difficult if you don’t drive but if possible please give an alternate way to get to some of these places like a bus or taxi service if there is no train.
Coming from France I completely understand your worries about driving on the opposite of the road. If you need more information regarding access via bus or taxi, feel free to check out the detailed "Access" section for each of Niigata's spots on our website: www.japan-guide.com/list/e1207.html
Hi Caro,
It's actually not that scary driving on the "wrong" side of the road hihi... I did that in New Zealand and it was actually fun,
how and why ?
It's because everything is on the "wrong" side haha... From getting to the driver seat, to hitting the stick for the turning signal, to the windshield wiper, and the constant of reminding yourself to drive on the "wrong" side of the road to not murder yourself and innocent people haha...
Oh, and I'm not sure where you live in the U.S, but apparently there are many round abouts in New Zealand so it's a lot of other "fun" getting lost in the round abouts haha...
I never get to drive in Japan so I don't know if it's the same kind of "fun" I had in New Zealand haha... Considering the roads in Japan are very narrow, not as wide like they are in the U.S (well, they were pretty narrow in New Zealand as well hihi...)
Sorry for my rambling hihi...
Real beautifull japon.💙🙏
Great and Amazing Thank you for your sharing of video - Wonderful country regarding my thai friends from Bangkok - They have been several times and make me that after Covid time, I will visit Japan. I like this culture and be always fascinated in Japan Culture, Nature since I lived in Bangkok. Best wishes from STOCKHOLM - SWEDEN

Great stuff on rural Japan
Thank you very much!
Thank you...
Thankyou so much, very helpful video
Spectacular
I ❤ 🇯🇵
That's very well done 😅 I enjoyed it🎉
Thank you so much!
Sooo!!! Beautiful
Thank you so much!
Love this channel!
Thank you so much!
It seems like 3 days is a bit rush to really appreciate the beauty and history of these places. For these smaller onsen, restaurants, do they welcome foreigners/have English menu? For the museum and the mines, do they have English illustrations/guided tour? It would be nice if you could put the links to all the places mentioned in your video. Thanks!
Look in the description. He has provided a detailed blog post with links at the end. For English translation your best bet is to hire his company.
@@TheUrbanFarmers Thanks. But why would I hire his company if the onsen, restaurants, etc. have English instructions/menu. I know in bigger cities like Tokyo and in major tourist spots, they usually do. But in the country side, they may not. That's why I am asking.
I live for these videos!!! 🥳🥳
Thank you!
You're welcome!
yes. i really did enjoy this video:) arigatō
You are welcome!
Thank you 🙏🏻
You're welcome!
I live in niigata but never ever have a chance to go to these place
Am ready to move, don't even look back, 🌱🇯🇵
Matt is looking good!
Thank you! :)
Lovely!
Very interesting. I would have added a visit to the place where KODO lives and trains1
Personally I wouldn't want to go to any big city. I avoid cities and crowds like the plague. If I went to Japan I would definitely go to the countryside. The countryside is where the beauty is not the ugly buildings in the city.
Great and we need and wish videos in Real Best 4K 60fps HDR resolution clarity quality soon please and Sound in full HD 3D Stereo Surround.
This itinerary, while showcasing beautiful scenery and unique experiences, involves too much time and expense getting around by car (2 hours from Echigo-Tsumari to Niigata City on the unlovely expressway, a toll road; car rental on Sado, which can cost as much as 45,000 yen/ day during peak season). Moreover, the plan ignores more accessible but equally interesting rural destinations in Niigata such as Ojiya (known for Nishikigoi), Yahiko (an historic hot spring village home to the prefecture's largest shrine complex), and Murakami (a former castle town with restored machiya district and renowned salmon fishery), to name a few. Finally, Shukunegi, while prosperous, was not a port town, properly speaking: nearby Ogi was the port, established and maintained by the Edo Bakufu.
Would be such a waste to let beautiful place like this dies
Wonderful views. In Feb 2022 is it still common for people to wear masks outdoors out in the rural areas of Japan? It's not common where I am anymore.
Thank youf or the nice comment. To this day it is still very common to wear a face mask indoors and outdoors (on the streets, in parks, etc).
Hi, currently planning a trip to Japan in September and would like to incorporate this trip however in having trouble finding hire cars at Tokamachi and hoping to drop it off at Nagano. Do you have any advice. Loved the video.
Hi Matt, just wondering if you can give some advice on hiring a car as per my message. We just watched your latest video and loved it. Will try and fit it into our time in Osaka. Hope too hear from you. Thanks
❤️❤️❤️
Wow, is there any film that setting place in Shukunegi?
That's a good question, but after looking online I could not find a movie set in Shukunegi..
Yes, there is. Scenes from "The Earthquake Bird", a film produced by Ridley Scott, were filmed in Shukunegi.
Correct me if I am wrong but I thought Japan was in the middle of a travel ban or is this video from a different time.?
Double-edged sword for channels which cover such a specific niche. These days, you're being a bit of a dick if you come up with travel guides to places you can not - under any regular circumstances - visit, yet have to create new content in order to not get thrown out of the Partnership Program and thus further finance the operation. However, planning ahead is always a good idea and I appreciate these clips as I can put down travel routes whenever I want.
There is no travel restrictions within Japan, but the borders are closed to new international arrivals. Hopefully these videos can provide some ideas for future trips!

he Japnese are so creative!
The disappearing towns are extremely sad.
What editing software are they using for their videos?
We use Adobe Premiere for the editing and After Effects for all the animations!
I’d like to explore rural Japan but I think one of the challenges is transportation? Most of the guides I see show that it can be accessed by driving only. 😭
You're right, which is why the two destinations showcased in this video are impractical for most visitors to Niigata; much better to have chosen rural attractions accessible by public transport.
I am in japan and almost finished with university stay here, wanted to go up north but unsure if I can if I cannot rent a car.. might have to go west instead
Hi. There are plenty of places to go up north that are accessible by public transport.
Matt, are you Sam's brother?
It's a MYSTERY!
Actually no it's a pure coincidence!
Can you tell me ,which season is best to visit in Niigata and Sando Island?
I would say the fall or spring 🎉
So sad that there are no children in this beautiful place!
Are you a brother of sam evans?
The same last name is actually a pure coincidence^^
1080p in 2022 😡
Niggata?
Are the locals called Niggatians?
He missed the best part of Niigata. Bar Hallelujah.
Closed years ago.
@@YamabushiTrails the owner came back and opened again in Furumachi 5 ban-cho👍👍👍
Under a different name, right?
@@YamabushiTrails I think it's called Bar Hallelujah now, not the original Club Hallelujah
This video is beautifully shot, but the over use of fifty different loud inappropriate guitar tracks, even when you're talking, sadly makes it much less enjoyable than it should be ☹️
Japanese government didn't try to improve rural to avoid decline population
The countryside needs business, not fake art to keep people living there lol.
